Kings and queens do good and bad things, sometimes the bad things outweigh the good things, and sometimes the good things outweigh the bad things. Isabella was the queen of Spain from 1474 to 1504. She did many wonderful things that benefited the countries of Castile and Aragon which she ran alongside with her husband (Highfield). Isabella Castile was a hero due to the fact that she united Spain, she approved Christopher Columbus's voyages, and she broke free from gender roles.

who was the king of Portugal. Isabella went against his wishes and married Ferdinand who would be king of Aragon. Isabella became queen despite anti-Aragonese groups (Highfield). Isabella created a new dynasty for ruling both Aragon and Castile. She ruled alongside with her husband Ferdinand, in Aragon. She and her husband are famous for uniting spain (Anderson and Zinsser). Isabella had so many things she wanted to do for the two countries, but her future plans came to a tragic and when she tragically died from a high fever on November 26 1504 (Cavendish). Isabella Castile was the hero in the time that she ruled due to the fact that she was able to unite Spain. Isabella ruled the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile making the country of Spain one step closer to being united. Anderson and Zinsser, who wrote the book A History of Their Own Volume 1, explains this when they write, “By uniting Castile and Aragon, Isabella and Ferdinand created a dynasty with enough resources to impose peace and strong enough to pass the united kingdom on” (Anderson and Zinsser page 322). Isabella along with her husband created a dynasty with many resources that benefited the country of Spain. Having the resources to keep a peaceful and strong dynasty for generations shows that Isabella was the hero when she united Spain. Even though Aragon and Castile were governed by themselves, they were united with ideas about what should happen in Spain, like when they came together to end the Reconquista when they captured Granda (Highfield). They also came together when they had everyone convert to christianity. The good thing about having everyone follow one religion is that there would be less fighting over religion along with issues and everyone will be happy. Having one religion also helped unite the two countries of Aragon and Castile (Craughwell). Isabella’s action to support christopher columbus on his voyage through the Americas made her the hero.
Christopher Columbus found many new things such as different islands on his voyage, one of the reasons that he was on the voyage was for Isabella Castile. In a primary source written by Columbus to the king and queen of spain, he writes what he found and how amazing it was by saying, “In the island, which I have said before was called Hispana, there are very lofty and beautiful mountains, great for farms, groves and fields, most fertile both for cultivation and for pasturage, and well adapted for constructing buildings. The convenience of the harbors in this island, and the excellence of the rivers, in volume and salubrity, surpass human belief, unless on should see them. In it the trees, pasture-lands and fruits different from those of Juana” (Columbus). Columbus found many new things on these islands that benefit people back in his kingdom. With this new development and Isabella's support, they were able to find new land with fertile soil and fruits. With new land, they could gain resources and send them back to Spain for people to live a happier life with more food. There were also new people on the island, with new people, Isabella was excited to spread christianity to the west. She loved the Native Americans and freed enslaved Natives that Columbus had enslaved. Isabella is the hero because he helped her country grow due to her supporting the voyage.
(Highfield). Breaking free from gender roles placed on woman in the middle ages shows that Isabella is the hero. In the middle ages woman didn't have much rights, they didn't have the education that men did and only men could work. Anderson and Zinsser explain this when they write, “These changes also limited elite women's access to land and thus to power. For a few extraordinary woman like Isabella of Castile the changes made their place in the lineage more significant. In the absence of sons, the constraints of gender no longer applied. Daughters became the means of maintaining the noble or royal family’s claims to property and authority. These women became liege and reigning monarchs in their own right and acquired more power than most noblemen.” (Anderson and Zinsser page 223). Isabella was able to change gender roles by being the queen and passing it down to woman. The lack of sons gave woman the chance to own land and run land without men taking over. Also, the slow decline of gender roles allowed Isabella to pick her own husband, she decided to go against men's wishes and marry Ferdinand of Aragon. (Highfield). Isabella making that choice shows that she helped start the decline of men being the dominant one in gender roles. Isabella Castile was a hero due to the fact that she approved Christopher Columbus's voyages, she broke free from gender roles and united Spain. Christopher Columbus’s voyages made Isabella the hero because Isabella supported him and it made the country richer. Breaking free from gender roles is a heroic act due to the fact that is gives all woman a more free life. The action of uniting spain made Isabella the hero by being a stronger country.
After seeing that their life’s goal was a victory they agreed to begin Spanish exploration. One of the most important explorer was an Italian man named Christopher Columbus. Isabella is especially remembered as an important figure in time because ...
Columbus and Champlain were both devoted to the success of their expeditions; however, Columbus had far more selfish intentions. Columbus was an Italian who sought aid for a journey that would travel across the Atlantic Ocean in search for riches in the East. His support did not come easy as he was rejected by the courts of Portugal, France, and England. Ultimately, Columbus was able to gain authorization and funding for a voyage to begin in 1492 by the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel. After starting the long awaited expedition in April, Columbus was able to reach the West Indies by October of that year. Upon encountering the New World, Columbus immediately claimed the land along with its natives for his Spanish sovereigns.
Who is Christopher Columbus? You may already have prior knowledge of him, but if you do not, Christopher Columbus was a Spanish explorer who made four voyages to the Americas. His voyages led to the Columbian Exchange and colonization. Many cultures, ideas, technology, and foods were spread between the Americas, the “New World,” and Europe, Africa, and Asia, the “Old World”. Even though many great things were exchanged between the Old World and the New World, many diseases from Europe were introduced to the Natives. Does this make Christopher Columbus a hero, or a villain? The answer is not that debatable. A closer look must be taken at Christopher Columbus 's life to be able to judge such things. This essay will take a look at his life,
In 1492, Christopher Columbus was a self-made man who worked his way up to being the Captain of a merchant vessel. He gained the support of the Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, for an expedition to the Indies. With the support of the Spanish monarchy, he set off to find a new and faster trade route to the Indies. Upon the arrival of his first voyage, Columbus wrote a letter to Luis de Santangel, a “royal official and an early supporter of his venture,” in February 1493 (35). The epistle, letter, entitled “Letter to Luis de Santangel Regarding the First Voyage” was copied and then distributed in Spain before being translated and spread throughout Europe. The Letter is held in such regard with the people as it is considered the first printed description of the new world. Through his description of the nature of the islands, Columbus decided the future fate of the islands. His description of the vast beauty of the nature around him, declares both the economic and nationalistic motivations for colonizing the new world.
Many people have heard of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. However, only some know of all the things they accomplished. They might be best known for funding the voyages of Christopher Columbus, but they also greatly contributed to the unity of Spain (“Isabella l”). Together, they brought many kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula together to form what Spain is today. Through Spain’s unification, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella strengthened Spain into an economic and dominant world power, enabling the spread of Christianity and the colonization of a New World.
Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain were the duo monarchs of the new nation of Spain, brought together by their families' lands of Argon and Castille. Ferdinand of Argon, son of John II of Argon, rose to power through his marriage to Isabella of Castille. Isabella of Castille was the daughter of King John I, of Castille. After King John I died, her older brother was the next heir I'm line, King Henry IV. When King Henry IV was seen unfit to rule by nobles, he was pushed aside to let his younger half-brother Alfonso take the throne. Fortunately, at least for Isabella, Alfonso soon after died of the plague, and had named her his successor in his will. This king and queen brought together their people firstly by completing the Reconquista, the expulsion of people practicing Muslim and Judism, to unify their nation under the religion of Roman Cathlioc. Although this couple's greatest achievement was their funding towards Christopher Columbus who ultimately found the New World. Through this, and their "claim" of it, Spain grew prostperous through the collection and mineing of silver and gold. This also lead to colonization and tr...
Christopher Columbus was a European explorer who a more fitting title would be a conqueror. He didn't discover anything as the common believe would say, rather he conquered already inhabited land. Christopher Columbus "exploration" had a bunch of direct and indirect effects. The exploration sponsored by the King and Queen of Spain had direct effects such as giving Spain control over new land and giving Christopher Columbus the fame he so desired, furthermore the so-called exploration also had some indirect effects such as allowing other nations to sail West and it also affected the Natives and increased the slave trade.
Christopher Columbus is a mythical hero or in other words, not a true hero. The story of Christopher Columbus is part of the many myths of Western civilization. Also the story of Christopher Columbus represents the power of those that are privileged and in most cases white European men that have written this mythical history. Zinn (2009 exposes the truth about Columbus through eyes of the people who were there when he had arrived which were the Native Indians (p.481). Columbus had kept a personal journal for his voyage to describe the people and the journey. What was evident throughout his journal was the Native Americans were very nice, gentle and kind hearted people (Zinn, 2009, 481). As Zinn suggests Columbus spoke of the Native Americans as” they are the best people in the world and
Christopher Columbus was a famous navigator and explorer who was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. Columbus wanted to claim land for Spain so he could be rich and spread religion. He originally set out to find the East Indies for many reasons. One was that he hoped to establish trade routes and colonies in order to gain wealth. Another was that there were now bigger guns that could be strapped on ships so he felt that his voyage had more of a chance of being successful. The main reasons for his exploration was that he wanted to find a western route to Asia to find the riches that Marco Polo talked about in his book. So basically he was not courageous, he was just greedy. He intended on arriving in Japan on his first voyage, but instead, he arrived at the Bahamas archipelago. He ended up making numerous voyages and claiming the lands he visited for the Spanish Empire. Columbus continued voyages creating the first lasting European conta...
Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon were one of the most famous married couples in history. Isabella was beautiful. “She had blue eyes and chestnut hair.” “She was just striking” (Isaacs). By the time she was 18, she wore beautiful gowns and jewels. “She wore them throughout her life” (Isaacs). Ferdinand and Isabella ruled Spain in a joint ruling, converted Muslims to Christianity, sponsored Christopher Columbus’s journey to a New World, had a family and Isabella even had time for education. Isabella and Ferdinand were devout Catholics that pushed and strived for Christianity in Spain. Despite their extreme measure to push for Christianity, their time in reign was the Golden Age of Spain.
[2] Columbus is a mainstay of American patriotism. He is the patron saint who planted the seeds of our nation. Our culture has been lulled into his heroic myth for hundreds of years and has celebrated this man with much pomp and circumstance. Columbus’ worthiness has been the subject of much controversy and is now being linked to such un-heroic terms as mass murder, holocaust, and genocide.
Mary Tudor or Queen Mary I of England was infamously known as Bloody Mary. While many believe Bloody Mary was an evil monster, others believe she was a great queen because of her many accomplishments. Marie Antoinette wrongfully suffered for many years under the pressures of court and the subjects under the crown. She redeemed herself from the immature spending and luxury of her earlier years by serving as a loving wife, mother and ruler later on. Despite her situation, she remained a fair, brave and respectable queen and should be remembered for her courageous acts in a time of revolutionary change.
Queen Elizabeth I was said to be one of the best rulers of England. Unlike rulers before her, she was a Protestant and not a Catholic. She was not stupid though. She did go to church and did everything that Catholics did to prevent getting her head cut off under the rules of her sister Mary. Elizabeth was very young when she came to rule. She was only 17 years old when her sister Mary died and she took over.
Amelia Mary Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas on July 24, 1897. Amelia was named after her two grandmothers. She was the daughter of a railroad attorney and her family usually did not stay in one place for very long. At such a young age, Amelia's parents separated. This devastating change impacted Amelia greatly. Though it did not affect the decisions she had already made, it did slow her down exceedingly. Even though her parents both separated, her mother and father were both very supportive of her. (ibnlive.in.com 2014) Amelia had other supporters in the family also. Amelia had a younger sister named Muriel. Amelia’s sister, Muriel, called Amelia “Meelie” because she was not able to pronounce Amelia. In college, Amelia took the course of Red Cross First Aid and took...
