She obtained an undergraduate degree in design, printmaking, and drawing at Howard University followed by a Master’s degree in sculpture from the University of Iowa in 1940. After leaving Iowa, Catlett moved to New Orleans and became chair of the Art Department at Dillard University in 1940. Then she continues her postgraduate studies in ceramics at the University of Chicago in 1941. By 1944, she had married and relocated to Harlem where she taught dressmaking and sculpture. In 1945, Catlett applied for and received the Julius Rosenwald Foundation Grant. After her successful completion of a series of prints paintings and sculptures, she was able to renew this grant, which allowed her to continue her work in Mexico City. While in Mexico City, she continued her studies in painting, sculpture, and lithography and eventually worked with the People’s Graphic Arts Workshop; which was a group of printmakers who created art to promote social change. Eventually she settled in Mexico as a permanent resident where she taught sculpture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City until she retired in 1975.
The Latina women, even throughout the era resistance cinema, have not been able to make much progress in overcoming the degrading stereotypes that Hollywood has created for them. Despite the many advances that minorities have made in the cinema in recent years, Latina actresses still take on the roles of the "dark skinned lady" and other such stereotypes with strong sexual connotations. It is often debatable whether or not the role of the Latina has undergone dramatic changes since the days of Dolores Del Rio and Carmen Miranda dancing with the fruit baskets on top of their heads. However, in recent years there has been an emphasis by various Latinas in the film industry to combat such stereotypical roles and redefine themselves through the film medium, especially by means of documentaries. It is hopeful that the existing portrayals of Latina women as the sex object and desirable mate will gave way to a range of opportunities in cinema with roles of a more powerful and influential nature.

Don Luis however escapes but is mauled to death by dogs on Cataleya’s command. She has finally achieved her goal of avenging her parents’ murder. Danny is arrested but cannot face any charges for any crime, he gets a call from Cataleya who tells him her real name, and he tells her he loves her. The movie ends with Cataleya boarding a bus whose destination we do not know. Why did you choose this film? I wanted this movie, Colombiana, because it has a strong female lead which provides a good role model to women in the society. It is an excellent film that shows how strong Cataleya was to go through a lot as a child but she still came out with a firm resolve to live on even after witnessing her parents being murdered. She grows up to be an intelligent lady and talented as those are skills required in an assassin. This film shows us that women can perform tasks that we think of only as strong roles. It is one of the best action movies with a female lead. It is so because the female lead has a significant role and focusing on showing Cataleya’s ability and prowess, unlike other films which glorify the male leads while the ladies play minor
