Most people consider social media valuable to their lives; however, the increasing use of social media has resulted in the loss of verbal communication skills. Sherry Turkle, a clinical psychologist at MIT, strongly argues that social media is causing a loss of real human connection. Turkle explains the difference between texting and face to face conversation clearly; each has a very distinct range. Texting conveys no emotion or feeling towards the person reading the text. In the second half of the article, Turkle raises the issue of young children having cell phones at an early age, and parents are more concerning when their children are not around. Parents who take full control their children’s lives by texting them several many times a day. As a result, children often receive less privacy than they require. Turkle also complains that adults have not taught “the sense of privacy” formally to young people, who readily share their identities and personal information on Facebook without realizing that this can be an issue. Specifically she states “this sense of the Facebook identity sort of as your-something that follows you all your life is something that many adolescents feel is a burden”. She implies that the only solution is the voluntary self-conscious decision of any individual to value his own privacy or someone else’s.
Turkle claims that social media transforms our views of ourselves and the way we interact socially. Her arguments about student attention in the classroom and fewer people being concerned about their privacy are very persuasive. However, Turkle does not note the positive impacts of social media, such as improving education and providing useful, practical applications.

...and make posters about the events in which we would later on participate in. Having a study group on “Facebook” is convenient; we do not need to have a physically group meeting, so we can save our time for study other classes, and it is much efficient than making phone calls or even sending emails.
Turkle warns her readers that social media can contribute to the loss of communication between individuals. Therefore I strongly suggest parent’s involvement. Parents should be willingly involved guides and role models. They must always know which sties and applications their children are using. Teacher should prohibit texting in order to ensure a better learning environment. Social media is admittedly an essential tool for our society. The real challenge leaves over of how we cannot completely ignore the negatives of this tool; we must acknowledge how to use it properly.
In the article, “Stop Googling”. Let’s Talk” author Sherry Turkle wants to tell the reader that people should value and respect their relationships by replacing smartphones with face-to-face conversations. She is a professor who has been studying psychology for around 30 years; she uses many other psychologists studies to prove that people are relying on smartphones too much and start to replace conversations with texting. In the essay, she explains how the smartphone is becoming an essential part of American lives which later affects people’s way of communication. She also provides several solutions for people to solve the negative effects that come from those devices so people can learn how to push back against it and start to engage more in the conversation to benefit yourself and society.
Josh Rose is single father facing difficult times to communicate with his son because the son is growing up in two houses, as he did. The technology and social media are helping them to filling up the time those they we’re apart. We should all care about it because, these are important in our daily life. Brent Staples article “What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow Up in Cyberspace” published in the New York Times, highlights how technology plays a heavy role in adolescent social development. For example, children growing up in the 21st century are bombarded with vast technological media outlets. Also, Staples supports with factual research indicating communicating through technology hinders children social skills. Staples explains how social media and networking has become a virtual reality, encouraging children not to value real-world experiences. Staples argues that adolescents cannot transition into the harsh realities of adulthood because they prefer socializing through virtual realities. Although there are parents who monitor adolescents’
Digital communication is impairing young users from having real life conversations. For example, in the article “Teens Have A Smart Reason For Abandoning Facebook And Twitter,” the author, Felicity Duncan, reports “If college students spend most of their media time on group text and
Social networking has increasingly had a huge impact on society. Technology has opened the door to a vast amount of information and to the ability to relay that information to practically anybody at anytime and anywhere. People are constantly checking their email, updating their status on Facebook, sending tweets on Twitter, instant messaging, and texting. The debate of whether the use of social networking is a negative or positive aspect is a continuous one. In the case of Steven Pinker, his essay “Mind over Mass Media” argues that media technologies have a positive effect on mental development. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should, while aware of the risks and dangers of social networking, use the Internet to its full potential.

In the age that we live in, social media has intergraded with college student’s daily lives and how much time is spent on social media. Social media is neither inherently bad nor good it all depends on how it is being used. “Social media are increasingly mobile, smartphones and tablets give users instant and around the clock access to social media and other web functions.” (Martinez-Aleman) When college students access sites on social media like Twitter or Facebook and get side tracked then social media is bad because it effects their education. However, when it is being used to communicate with their peers or professors then social media is a tool of good. Some researchers believe that the social media helps college
Communication plays an important role and becomes an essential part in our daily lives. Today we have taken communication to new level as social media and social networking. They have had a tremendous impacts on the word, on our culture and in business as well. Social media websites are some of the most popular on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They are the places where people can interact with others easily and expose themselves to strangers. Our generation and the younger ones have more opportunities to grow up with the new development of technology that will shape the way they live of communicating and sharing ideas. The social media causes some problems that lead to less social interaction and negatively affect students academic, but it also brings benefit to people that creates new social connections to bring people from all over the world to be closer.
There has been controversy as to whether parents should limit the use of social media by teenagers. Teenagers feel that there is no need to limit the use of their social media networking, but on the other hand parents should feel the need to limit their use and also keep track of their teen’s social networking. Social media has allowed to be connected with their peers, teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved in extracurricular activities, and to many teens putting up “selfies” is a self confidence boost; however, too much social media can affect students GPA in school, cyber bulling can affect social health. Social media networks can give out personal information.
As in real life, teenagers are very shy of what is coming out of their mouth, but in social media, it’s the opposite, “Social media is preventing us from standing up for ourselves the way we should be” (Thaiatizickas). Facebook is a convenient way to contact a long distance relative or friends, but teenagers are depending on it too much that make them lacked face to face communication. Social media such as Facebook limits the face to face interaction between humankind. Technology has a huge impact on human life and some may take them as an advantage and disadvantage. Many believed that the digital world is their real life and they can meet and talk to whoever they want through messenger and video calls. Teenagers often say the things that they wanted to say through social media, “they are sending messages and content that they would never share at school, often using language that they would never say to someone’s face, a language that, if used with classmates at school, would lead to disciplinary action” (journal by Steiner-Adair). Compare to the previous generations, the younger generations have the effects on social networking that cause them to grow up differently. Social media are now destroying teenagers’ social skills as well as the future
Social media has created a social problem in society and it is distorting how people are communicating with each other face to face. Social media in today’s day is seen as a worldwide antisocial epidemic amongst the younger generation and a few older adults born in the millennial. Social media is notably used more by the younger people in our society and around the world, considering that technology is more accessible and easier to use for them. This is because their generation was born into a technological and advancing society that it has adapted into modern society’s culture. Social media has become a part of today’s norm, in which people who own a smart phone have downloaded some sort of social media app in order to stay intact with family
In the personal world, social media is used to keep in contact with people, whether it is friends and family down the street, across the country or across the world. College students have been known to add their roommates or suite-mates on Facebook, as a way of getting to know them before they move in together.... ... middle of paper ... ...
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
The social media is one of the most common means of communication and pretty much of knowing anything and everything around the world these days, and it is growing very rapidly. It changes and affects each person in a different way, or ways. Some may argue that social media has a bad influence on children and young adults, while most people see that the social media has a more positive effect on them than a negative one. Social media is basically the new way of keeping in touch with everything and everyone, and of even strengthening bonds between each other. This essay will argue that social media has improved communication between people, and has also improved the means of communication between them.
The effect can been seen on the society as people now hide behind screens and tend to have limited face to face commutation. It’s also ironic that many relationships were built through online chatting and later were disappeared without people meeting one another in reality. Perhaps, one of the most downsides of Social media is the weakening of the bond between family members. In other words, the overuse of technology such as laptops and smartphones have negatively affected healthy relationships and led to isolation, depression and psychological conditions due to the lack of support between family members. Education wise, social media is believed to be one of the reasons behind the drop in educational level and standard among teenagers and children. The great amount of time they spend on social medial is likely to affect their intelligence as the brain become lazier in memory and information processing. In addition, Students are now totally reliant on “google” to find the answer for their research assignments or a question in their homework before attempting it by themselves. Unfortunately, social media has also led to decrease in spelling and grammar skills between students and children as many depend on ‘autocorrect’’ to check the spelling of their words and finish their sentences. Additionally, Moreover people became motionless because they are ignoring the real nature of speaking or writing,
