Most white parents would not allow their kids to be at the students at their school. the students went to school even tho there was all this people who were against them form going. the parents thought about the danger, but they took the risk as much as the kid did and by this choice they made history. if you make good decisions then you can achieve good or great things . The mind can think of million choices put, you can only pick one and how will you know which one that it. Giving people too many options is overwhelming and we are capable of making complex decisions . For 75 years following reconstruction the United States made little advancement towards racial equality. Many parts of the nation enacted Jim Crowe laws making separation of the races not just a matter of practice but a matter of law. The laws were implemented with the explicit purpose of keeping black American’s from being able to enjoy the rights and freedoms their white counterparts took for granted. Despite the efforts of so many nameless forgotten heroes, the fate of African Americans seemed to be in the hands of a racist society bent on keeping them down; however that all began to change following World War II. Thousands of African American men returned from Europe with a renewed purpose and determined to break the proverbial chains segregation had keep them in since the end of the American Civil War. With a piece of Civil Rights legislation in 1957, the federal government took its first step towards breaking the bonds that had held too many citizens down for far too long. The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was a watered down version of the law initially proposed but what has been perceived as a small step towards correcting the mistakes of the past was actually a giant leap forward for a nation still stuck in the muck of racial division. What some historians have dismissed as an insignificant and weak act was perhaps the most important law passed during the nation’s civil rights movement, because it was the first and that cannot be underestimated.
The schools that had been made for black people were extremely poor, with very books throughout each school and classes ranged from 40 - 50 children per class. This was not the case with white people and their schools. The white peoples schools flourished with books, equipment and the classes were kept low with manageable sizes. Good teachers had been employed to teach each class, but on the other hand with black schools, teachers who did not have particularly good skills were taught, and all the teachers would also be black. One of the most famous cases of segregation that was brought to public attention was that of the Linda Brown case.
“The World War II experience was a watershed for African Americans. Jim Crow remained intact, but the ideological bases of white supremacy and colonialism were undermined by the horrors of the Holocaust” (Earle 87). The war experience gave about one million blacks the opportunity to fight racism in Europe and Asia, a fact that black veterans would remember during the struggle against racism at home after the war. Perhaps just as important, almost ten times that many white Americans witnessed the patriotic service of black Americans. Many of them would object to the continued denial of civil rights to the men and women beside whom they had fought. After World War II the momentum for racial change continued. Black soldiers returned home with determination to have full civil rights. President Harry Truman ordered the final desegregation of the armed forces in 1948.
“In 1950, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People asked a group of African-American parents that included Oliver Brown to attempt to enroll their children in all-white schools, with the expectation that they would be turned away”(NAACP). Since Oliver Brown’s daughter was turned away from the all-white school four blocks from her home she had to walk a fairly far distance to catch the bus to her all black school. “Separate free schools shall be established for the education of children of African descent; and it shall be unlawful for any colored child to attend any white school, or any white child to attend a colored school”(Missouri 1929). This was no fair to her because she is being forced to go out of her way when there is a school just down the street she could go to, but she can’t because of her skin tone. This is what the start for the education system changing forever was known as Brown vs. Broad of education.
This is known as the Reconstruction Era. As the federal troops withdrew from the territory, it was left in the hands of white rule once again. This led to a set of laws meant to create a distinct separation amongst black and white yet again, taking away most of the rights that were given to blacks during the Reconstruction Era. This set of laws being called “Jim Crow”. Though seemingly rigid and complete, Jim Crow laws did not account for all of the discrimination blacks suffered. Unwritten rules barred blacks from white jobs in New York and kept them out of white stores in Los Angeles. Humiliation was about the best treatment blacks that broke such rules could hope for. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan, which revived in 1915, used venom and violence to keep blacks “in their place”(crfusa.org). This type of hate and discontent for blacks thrived during World War I. Despite having more than 360,000 black men serve in the Armed Forces for the United States during the war, a serious and major race riot in Chicago among 24 others in the country is what they walked back into. Black veterans were being lynched in uniform by white mobs. In 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded and gave colored people a voice, a way to fight back. Although they drew support from both blacks and whites, not much changed the “efficiency” of segregation for the next 30 years. By 1944, a Swede visiting the South pronounced segregation so complete that whites did not see blacks except when being served by them (crf-usa.org). It wasn’t until the second World War, when a bigger and more sinister foe, embodied the same ideals as Jim Crow to create a “master race”. These incidents combined led the way to the Civil Rights Movement. Linda Brown was a black elementary school child who was denied access to attending a school in a predominately white neighborhood. In Brown v. Board of Education a little girl had to walk blocks and blocks just to get to school. She would have to leave hours before school and would return home late at night. The African American people were not aloud to go to the same schools as the whites. Brown's parents took this to court asking why their child was not aloud to go to school with the whites. "Arguments were to be heard during the next term to determine just how the ruling would be imposed" (Brown v. Board of Education). As a result the court decided to desegregate schools, and make whites and blacks go to school together immediately. This is important because it desegregated schools. Due to the fact that abolishing racial inequality was a difficult task, there were Civil Rights leaders that led the Civil Right Movement in the 1960’s. The term “De Facto Segregation” means racial segregation in public schools, which was a major issue that arrived during this time period. Slaves were freed, meaning that they were given to (or at least were supposed to) the same rights as the whites. Due to Jim Crow laws, people with colored skin were equal but separated from the whites. There was different seating in public transportation, different restaurants, different bathrooms, etc. Colored people were given the same rights but white people refused to share anything in public with them, including school. This became a major issue and at one point was brought to the Supreme Court. In the Brown v. Board of Education case, judge Marshall stated that “...separate school systems for blacks and whites were inherently unequal, and thus violate the "equal protection clause" of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”(“History-Brown v. Board of Education Re-enactment” United States Courts). The court declared that having segregated schools was unjust. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed, a law that prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex or race when hiring, promoting or firing people. In 1965, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights law, prohibiting any racial discrimination in voting. Diversity, we define this term today as one of our nation’s most dynamic characteristics in American history. The United States thrives through the means of diversity. However, diversity has not always been a positive component in America; in fact, it took many years for our nation to become accustomed to this broad variety of mixed cultures and social groups. One of the leading groups that were most commonly affected by this, were African American citizens, who were victimized because of their color and race. It wasn’t easy being an African American, back then they had to fight in order to achieve where they are today, from slavery and discrimination, there was a very slim chance of hope for freedom or even citizenship. This longing for hope began to shift around the 1950’s during the Civil Rights Movement, where discrimination still took place yet, it is the time when African Americans started to defend their rights and honor to become freemen like every other citizen of the United States. African Americans were beginning to gain recognition after the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, which declared all people born natural in the United States and included the slaves that were previously declared free. However, this didn’t prevent the people from disputing against the constitutional law, especially the people in the South who continued to retaliate against African Americans and the idea of integration in white schools. Integration in white schools played a major role in the battle for Civil Rights in the South, upon the coming of independence for all African American people in the United States after a series of tribulations and loss of hope.
However, these African American citizens had remarkable courage to never stop, until these un-just laws were changed and they received what they had been fighting for all along, their inalienable rights as human beings and to be equal to all other human beings. Up until this very day there are still racial issues where some people feel supreme over other people due to race. That, however, is an issue that may never end. African Americans fought until the Jim Crow laws were taken out of effect, and they received equality for all people regardless of race. Along the way, there were many controversial court cases and important leaders who helped to take a stand against racial segregation.
