Who is to Blame for the Tragedy of Macbeth: Lady Macbeth. I believe that Lady Macbeth is to blame for the Tragedy of Macbeth. Multiple factors come into the tragedy, however, Lady Macbeth is the main reason behind Macbeth’s tragic end. When the play starts, Macbeth starts off as a good man. King Duncan describes him as ‘valiant’ and ‘brave’ which clearly shows how patriotic he is to his country and his King. However, he is easily manipulated despite his violent, strong nature. When Macbeth finds out about the prophecies from the Witches, he writes a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, talking about these prophecies. This clearly shows us that even Lady Macbeth understands that he is too good of a man to be able to kill the King. She further backs this point by describing Macbeth as ‘Art not without ambition, but without the illness to attend it’. This shows that Lady Macbeth thinks that she has to do something to Macbeth so that she can get him to kill the King, and they will be able to get more power. She says that she will ‘chastise with the valour of my tongue’, which shows the audience that she is powerful in a different way – powerful with words. This is a clear statement to the audience that she will get him to do it, even if he will argue with her, she will get him to do it. When Macbeth arrives home before Duncan is over for the banquet, we can see that Lady Macbeth proves her point straight away. In Act 1, Scene 5, she tells him to his face that Duncan will ‘never shall the sun that morrow see!’. This means that the King will not see the light of day tomorrow. She then says that Macbeth must ‘look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under’t’. This is probably the first stage of Lady Macbeth’s manipulation in order to make Macbeth betray his good friend
