Hamlet is a playwright written by William Shakespeare in the 16th century. The play transpires around the complex protagonist: Hamlet. The plot of the play is centered around Hamlet’s desire for vengeance against his uncle Claudius. Claudius murdered his own brother, married his deceased brother's widow and seized the throne. Hamlet, being his father’s only son, feels completely responsible to get justice for his father’s death. The desire for justice holds deep roots in Hamlet's persona and guides his life towards paths that would have been avoided. Revenge is the prominent driving force in the plot as it is intertwined with the characters’ intentions and interactions. Claudius was responsible for the deaths of Gertrude and Hamlet and Hamlet was responsible for the deaths of Claudius, Polonius, and Laraties. If one were to surface the complex plot of Hamlet, it would appear that Hamlet was victorious in his conquest for revenge because he achieved his goal of killing Claudius even if it meant death for himself. However, upon further analysis, Hamlet, who initiated the war, has lost the most in a fight for justice. Evidently, Hamlet has lost his sanity and lost sight of himself but the conquest of revenge makes Hamlet lose Ophelia. Ophelia, Polonius's daughter, and Hamlet's lover, was another innocent person sacrificed in Hamlet’s conquest for vengeance. Ophelia’s tragic death is Shakespeare anteing at Hamlet’s guilt and showcasing the tragedy that follows revenge. Ophelia is unable to control her grief and is liberated to a state of madness. Initially, Ophelia is torn between the expectations of her father and the love for Hamlet. "I do not know, my lord, what I should think." (Act I, Scene 3). This is an indicator that Ophelia’s lack of control starts to derail her mind. Following this, The loss of her lover and the death of her innocent father, Polonius, and the reality that Polonius was killed by Hamlet has made her deranged. Hamlet rejects Ophelia before leaving Denmark. Prior to this, he was confessing his love for her. Hamlet treats Ophelia as the victim of psychological abuse as he constantly manipulated her. Her fatal death is a reminder to Hamlet that he is responsible for the death of his beloved one. Additionally, Hamlet had to endure the pain of his mother’s death. Hamlet’s love for his mother is suppressed because of his anger towards her.
