Genetically Modified Foods are not suitable regarding safety. Some argue that this is false. They say that GMO’s are beneficial and don’t have any problems concerning safety. They say that there are other things that aren’t any riskier than GMO’s that we eat and we are fine after eating these things (crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques). Also, they say that it is safe and beneficial because it increases food supply and there is not an abundance of definitive information evident to prove that it is harmful. They are bad because GMO’s come with risks. According to text it says they “introduce allergens and toxins to food” and also create “super weeds” (Text 4, Graphic). This is not good because if people are being exposed to allergens in food, they are now more likely to develop allergies, which can be, in some ways restrictive to everyday life. Also, “super weeds” are emerging more and more as GMO’s are being used (Text 4, Graphic). This could become a problem because the more weeds that develop this trait, the less space there is for crops to grow, limiting produce surplus. This problem worsens because if it were to continue the agriculture industry would be completely wiped out. Some people argue and state that there would be “increased pest and disease resistance” if GMO’s were used (Text 4, Graphic). But looking at the facts, it wouldn’t matter because it would be too risky, due to the information given. According to anti-GMO activists (known as “Frankenfoods”), “GMO’s can cause environmental damage and health problems for consumers” (Text 2, lines 1-2). This is harmful because our environment is important, and if we decide to ignore it, and not take care of it, the environment will be destroyed, but more importantly we will be because we depend on the environment for survival. Health problems also play a big role when talking about GMO’s because we are dependent on being healthy. If we use GMO’s then we will have more health problems, not benefiting anyone in any way, just making things worse. Some people beg to differ. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) said that “the science is quite clear: crop improvement by the modern molecular techniques of biotechnology is safe” (Text 2, lines 10-12). While some people think that this is safe, they are wrong because there are two sides two every story, themselves only focused on the upsides of GMO’s, without even considering the downsides to them. Also, according to them, “the science is quite clear”, while if you look earlier in the text it shows how unclear the science actually is, listing some downsides to GMO’s. Genetically modified? That alone should be a cause for alarm, and have you wondering, what exactly is in this that I am eating? Yet every day millions of American’s choose to load up on food filled with GMO’s, and not even know it. First we must understand what GMO’s are. GMO’s are any organism whose genetics has been altered using genetic engineering. We should not be tampering with nature, and should try to grow organically as much as possible. There has not been enough research on GMO’s to know the potential long term effects it can have on us, so this is why GMO’s should be banned.
When we genetically modify an organism, we are creating an entirely new species. This can mean disaster for the surrounding natural organisms. These GM crops, which have been created to fight pests and weeds, can easily win in a competition for survival. Long-term effects include endangering these unmodified species, or even driving them to extinction. Another problem is that consumers don’t know when they’re eating GM foods. You might be allergic to fish, and then you go grocery shopping. You buy tomatoes to use in your dinner that night, with no knowledge that they have fish genes that can trigger your allergies. Allergic reactions to these modified foods are just another issue that comes up when GMOS come into play. Also, when we buy these foods, we’re supporting big industries that have patents on all these crops. The fact that people can patent crops just because they stuck some new DNA in them doesn’t make sense to begin with, but furthermore, the local, organic farmers who don’t want to, or can’t afford to pay these industries to use their patented crops are losing business.

Eating is extremely important, it is also important to eat healthy. Most Americans eat without any concerns; they are not questioning or researching what they are feeding themselves or their family. A lot of that has to do with their financial stability, not having the time to prepare a meal due to their time-consuming work schedule, also lack of knowledge and education on what they are consuming. An English doctor, named Arpad Pusztai, did a study on rats being fed genetically modified foods. His study found out that rats that ate genetically modified potatoes had pre-cancerous cells, smaller brains, smaller livers, smaller testicles, and damaged immune systems. After finding this out, he then changed the eating habits of the rats by interchanging between feeding them organic potatoes and genetically modified potatoes for two weeks at a time. He concluded that whenever the rats ate the organic potatoes, their symptoms disappeared, but when the rats ate the GMO potatoes again, the symptoms reappeared.
