First of all, is it ethical to cheat? That question can not be answered with a simple yes or no, there are more things that come into play such as, what are they cheating on, is it simply cut and pasted or did they make it there own. Cheating is not as big of a deal as people make it out to be, it is just a means to an end. Nothing anyone ever will do, no rules any university would make will change this fact. People will cheat and a majority of them will get away with it never thinking twice about it. Cheating does not harm anyone, including the person cheating, as much as it is made out to be, everyone cheats in life at some point , cheating is just getting students ready for the real world. The only type of cheating that is bad in anyway, is shoddy cheating; cheating that the person does not take the time to make it look like ones own. Skilled cheater can cheat so well it is almost impossible to tell, they make the thing they cheated their own. Cheating has gotten a bad rap, it is something that will help one do well in this world and get what they want and/or need done to make any effect in the world.
You have to cheat to get ahead in the real world, I am sorry to say that but, it is the truth. In a job interview one may add some things to their resume to make them better then the other people trying for the job. In the real world people cheat all the time, it is the only way to get things done in a quick and efficient manor. Academic cheating, for the most part is more helpful then hurtful. If one can do it right and get away with it, it shows them how to manipulate, how to get them to believe what you did is your own work and believe you. That is much more beneficial to a person in the real world then a paper on the reason...

Therefore, cheating is not as bad as people make it out to be. It is a way to teach young people about the real world, if they can do it in a skilled enough way they will be better for it. The cheating that was manly talked about in this essay was not really academic cheating, but cheating in the real world, they are one in the same, to quote Jeri Ryan “Cheating is often more efficient”(197). It may not be the best thing for someone to do but it gets the job done. It is a useful skill that allow the person to find out things about the world the saying “cheaters never prosper” is false, they are the ones that go the farthest in life. A better way to look at it is if you don’t cheat you will do worse in life, “ nice guys finish last.”
When Professor John Doe assigned this reading assignment, I had really no idea what academic book would appeal to me. I definitely wanted to choose a book that would impact me in the long run and that I would benefit from. When I told my brother about the book, he said that he was just finishing a book called “The Cheating Culture, Why More Americans Are Doing More To Get Ahead” by, David Callahan. When he quickly explained what the book was about I knew that was the book I was going to read. I figured that this would be a good choice, because everywhere you look these days you see cheating. This book was published back in 2004 so even though it is a decade old, I do believe that many of the examples in the book are still problems, if not, even worse today than they were a decade ago. Weather it is kids in school, athletes, or the average business man. Everyone is cheating and trying to cut corners to get ahead. Nearly everyone has cheated in their life rather you would want to admit it or not. Reading this book, I was hoping to learn exactly why so many people try to cheat, and what alternatives people could take to prevent from cheating.
By using logos audience appeal, logical reasoning, he is presenting his audience with a straightforward way to help the American high education system recover. He states a rebuttal argument and gives the reader another idea toward cheating in a school environment. “Cheating now hurts American higher education; it might well be cheating that can begin to save it” (Chace 201). Cheating in higher education is more severe and frowned up then primary school. From reading this quote, it could mean that it does hurts higher education, but when someone cheats it is to be considered that a good grade was received. So people can determine that cheating
Situations of cheating have seemed to become more and more commonplace when the student is bored by the subject material, poor teaching and or feels they have no use for the knowledge. Kohn even states in his article, “cheating is more common when students experience the academic tasks they’ve been given as boring, irrelevant, or overwhelming.” This infers that if a student were attending a school interested in learning about art, the student maybe more inclined to cheat in a business accounting class due to the fact the student would find the subject material irrelevant to them and their future. Students seem to be less inclined to cheat and it “is relatively rare in classrooms where the learning is genuinely engaging and meaningful to students and where a commitment to exploring significant ideas hasn’t been eclipsed by a single-minded emphasis on “rigor”” (Kohn). To simplify everything mentioned above; students are inclined to cheat in school when they are disinterested in the subject material and or are overwhelmed by in assignment or finally the result in a poor teacher. Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. There is an epidemic of cheating in American universities. Students are finding easier and more efficient ways to cheat. Morals and morality are changing. Students, members of the younger generation, and teachers, members of the older generation, differ on what is cheating. Morality even differs amongst students. Some students still adhere to the traditional sense of morality, and find what other students do an abhorration of morality. This essay is a mostly a pathos and ethos argument that attempts to appeal to the reader’s sense of right and wrong by using so-called “authorities.”
Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.
From a young age we are taught the differences between right and wrong, but as we get older the line between moral and immoral is often blurred. Things that were once thought of as unacceptable are now perfectly fine in our minds. Have you ever seen anyone cheat on an assignment or exam? Do you know anyone that’s been expelled from school for cheating? What if it was discovered that a U.S. senator plagiarized his college thesis paper? Imagine if it got out that one of the most respected universities in the U.S. was involved in a huge fraud scandal that involved thousands of students. Academic cheating is a terrible offense because it is unethical, self-degrading, and can be detrimental to the learning environment.
We might want to first follow that question with another question. What is cheating and why do so many people do it? Most people would agree that cheating is deceitful and one who obtains answers by cheating is not practicing good integrity. We could further add that cheating also prevents the student from having to put in long hours of studying and preparation. Recent technology has made this “time saving method” even more efficient.
