Three sets of characters that I feel are good role models are Lucy Burns and Emily Leighton in Iron Jawed Angels, Miriam Thompson and Odessa Cotter in The Long Walk Home, Sister Sunday and Mother St. John in The Mighty Macs. The first set of role models is Lucy Burns and Emily Leighton from the film Iron Jawed Angels. In the film viewers see that Lucy Burns is the best friend and right hand to Alice Paul. Lucy helped Alice reopen the D.C. office and she helped recruit people. There were points in the film where Lucy and other protesters had to face heavy criticism and violence, but she never gave up. After, Inez Mulholland the face of the movement died Alice gave up for a moment, but Lucy told Alice that Inez would not want her death to cause them to …show more content…
give up. After, Lucy’s talk, they ended up planning a picket outside of the White House fence. Lucy would not let Alice participate, because she knows that the protesters would be arrested. Lucy was right, herself and other protesters were arrested and given 60 days at Occoquan, Virginia women's prison. When Lucy and the other protesters arrived in prison, she argued that they were political prisoners and ended up cuffed to her prison door with her hands crossed above her head. Another character in the film Iron Jawed Angels is Emily Leighton. Emily Leighton was the wife of a Senator who was against the movement and didn’t want Emily partaking in the movement. Even though, her husband was against it Emily donated money and tried helping in the office. When her husband found out that she was helping the movement, he cut her funds, and threaten to take away the children. This is when Emily decided to join the picket line and ended up in jail with Lucy. These two women know the risks of being a part of the movement, but they still decided to partake in it. Emily had a lot more to lose than Lucy, but she still decide to fight for women rights. The next set of characters is Odessa and Miriam from the Long Walk Home. Odessa is an African-American during the time of the civil rights movement. She has to go through many obstacles and walks ten miles to get to work during the bus boycott. One night Odessa’s husband told her that she could ride the bus, but she told him no and that she was not giving up on the cause. Another example is during Christmas dinner when Mr. Thompson’s mother insulted African-Americans and did not realize Odessa was in the room. Instead of defending her race, she says nothing and keeps doing her job. The other maid told Odessa that if she was in the room and heard Mrs. Thompson, she would have thrown the plate of rolls at her and quit. Secondly, the film shows Miriam, who is determined to help Odessa and disobeys her husband to do what is right. At the beginning when Odessa is kicked out of the park with Mary Catherine, Miriam makes the officer apologize to Odessa. Also, when Miriam found out that Odessa was walking to work she told Odessa that she will give her a ride two mornings of the week. When her husband found out, he made her tell Odessa that she has to walk to work. After Odessa made it to work she asked why Miriam could not pick her up any more. Miriam told Odessa that her husband found out and that is why she cannot bring her any more. They then had a heart to heart and Odessa told Miriam that everyone is scared and asked what Miriam was scared of. This is when Miriam decides to stick up for her beliefs and tells off her husband. She told him that she is going to keep driving Odessa because she needs her and if he did not like her driving Odessa he could hire another maid. She also told him that she could get a job of her own to make her own money to support Dr. King.
After the argument Miriam asks Odessa what she needs to do to help with the carpool. Miriam ends up helping with the carpool which her husband had no idea until the end. Miriam and Odessa held their ground during this rough time even though it was hard and they were extraordinary women. The last set of characters that are role models is Sister Sunday and Mother St. John from the film Mighty Macs. Sister Sunday is a good role model because she helps coach Rush teach the importance of teamwork, she gives advice, protects others, and gets Mother St. John to believe in the basketball team. In the film viewers can see Sister Sunday helping Coach Rush teach the importance of teamwork and praying for the girls at the begging of the games. Another example, in the film the shows her as a role model is when Mother St. John was going to fire Coach Rush for keeping the girls out late and endangering them. Sister Sunday told Mother St. John that it was all her idea and Coach rush just want along with it. A third example is when she gave Coach Rush advice on her husband and told her tell her husband I love you every once in a while. The final example is when Sister Sunday puts a basketball team button under Mother St. Johns
tea cup. When Mother St. John sees it, she asks whose it is. All of the other nuns show her their buttons, then Sister Sunday says “it must be yours.” Mother Saint John is another role model in the film. Even tough, Mother St. John seems strict, she’s really not. The school was having a hard time with money and the priest and other members were talking about selling out. When Coach Rush asked for money for uniforms Mother St. John told her that she can use anything that belongs to her. She tells Coach rush to follow her and takes her past the sick nuns to her room which has nothing. Also when the Coach asks for money for the team to go to finals, Mother superior tells her that there is no money, but they could use the lotion to fundraise. The basketball team still fell short of the money needed, so mother superior gave her poker money to the team so they could go. Each woman is a role model in their own right and accomplished many goals in their film
On October 4, 2016 the sustainability department at Appalachian State University presented the film The Seventh Fire. This was the 3rd of five films in the series devoted to social justice that the sustainability department is presenting. This film was an informative piece on the prevalent drug and gang issue that is common on Native American reservations. The film focuses on the White Earth Indian Reservation and two members who act as large influences in the gang and drug culture that runs rampant through this community. Throughout the documentary both Rob Brown and his 17-year-old pupil Kevin struggle with gang affiliation and the want for redemption and salvation.
A role model can be looked up upon and imitated. Many would argue that Sir John
The film I will focus on is the Men of Atalissa by Kassie Bracken. The significant limit of the rights that these disabled men faced was the right of a livable wage. The film depicted how the men were dedicated workers and wanted a good life for themselves. However, because of being disabled, they were not paid a fair wage for their work. The people in the town would refer to them as the boys (Bracken, 2014). This illustrated that they were devalued and seen as less important. In addition, when they were seen as the boys it could have been an excuse to devalue their work and pay them less. I choose this as most significant because all the men were promised a lavish retirement if they worked at the turkey farm. They strived for this lifestyle,

For too long, women has been deprived equal rights as men. Even though women played a vital role in the building of this nation, they are deprived the rights of first class citizenship. Especially in the late 1800s and early 1900s, women were instrumental in upholding a traditional family values, they helped in the industrial age, they took care of war victims during the First World War, women worked overtime in the weapon factory to make sure the American military had a steady supply during the War and many more participation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable society is achieved. But men took their role for granted and refused to acknowledge their full importance and the amendment of the constitution to give them the rights to earn equal
The Golden Age of Mexican cinema (1936-1959) produced great films that not only established a national identity, but also helped to spread Catholicism through movies such as Macario (1961), by Roberto Gavaldón, and Salón México (1949), by Antonio Díaz Conde. The film, Macario, follows the story of a man named Macario, a peasant who struggles with his family to survive poverty. After Macario shares with Death one of his most awaited meals, Death rewards Macario with the ability to tell who will die and how to cure those who are sick. Salón México focuses on Mercedes, a woman who works in a cabaret in order to keep her sister, Beatriz, at a private school. At one point, Mercedes wins a dancing contest with Paco, a thief and womanizer obsessed
True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would want to have in the near future and those who interest us in a way that make us want to be a better person. They teach us more about ourselves and encourage us to make better choices. A role model is not just someone who is successful, but someone who has had similar experiences that we have had. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates that Atticus Finch is a true role model. Over the course of the novel, Atticus stands up for his beliefs, respects everyone despite who they are and behaves as a true father. Atticus is truly the ideal role model.

Gladiator (2000) is an action drama about a Roman general that is betrayed by his country and is forced to fight in the Colosseum. This particular scene, which runs for approximately 5 minutes, is the aftermath of the fight scene between Maximus, the betrayed general, and Commodus, the jealous emperor who betrayed him. This scene is not only significant because it is the concluding scene of the film, but also because it represents the end of Maximus’s enslavement and his coming to peace with dying.
McAlpin was a good role model because he was a reporter. He was the first African American reporter. He fast’s other white reporters and they thought that black people couldn’t be reporters. This led for everyone to believe that anyone can do anything. This is why being an African American reporter makes him a good role model.
an individual who inspires me is Audrey Hepburn, best known for her role in "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Behind her pretty looks and her movie star career, many people aren't aware that Audrey Hepburn was a great humanitarian that had important role in UNICEF, The United Nations Children's Fund. Her acts of generosity and kindness demonstrated that a big name in Hollywood could be more than just a pretty face. Many people do not know that Audrey Hepburn was a goodwill ambassador of UNICEF. After her film career, she dedicated the rest of her life to helping impoverished children in the poorest nations. Hepburn had a wide knowledge of many languages which helped her on her travels, she was naturally bilingual in English and Dutch, along with being
Many people find someone in his/her life to look up to, a role model. There are many different kinds of role models; they can be singers, public speakers, a parent, or even a friend. Role models also are not determined by certain criteria. A role model can be a role model just because they are a leader or have a great talent. Oprah Winfrey is considered a role model to many individuals because of her tough childhood, wonderful charity work, her schools, and the true relationships with her fans. Oprah stands out among many people on her ability to feel others’ pain and help those people get through their troubling times.
My grandma is my role model because she has accomplished so much and been through so much in her life. She is a very beautiful person, but very stubborn in what she believes and wants. Its almost impossible to get her to change her mind. She is always telling me how proud she is of me and has pretty high expectations of me. My mom is also a role model for me because she had a rough childhood and after she started a family she went back to college she is still attending college now, she gives me motivation to never give up and reminds my of how good my life is
Many of us have role models in our lives and to most people role models are athletes and movie stars, but to me a role model is much more. To me a role model is a person who has positively influenced someone in life, and is not a person filled with selfishness and greed. They help shape someone’s personality, and characteristics. They are people who someone can look up to for advice in a hard situation, and know that they will give those words of wisdom. They will never judge our past actions, instead only look to help because they really care. A role model is someone who we should never feel awkward talking to about our problems. A perfect role model for me is my mother. She is a wonderful human being. She’s smart, wise, ambitious, patient and such a loving person. There are no words that can describe my gratitude towards her, but through this essay I will describe some of her characteristics that makes her my role model.
