As robots have become more of a reality and less of movie magic, (see Brian Gair’s robotics essay) they have been put to the test in many ways. Recently, the United States military has been funding companies to develop unmanned drones and unmanned vehicles that can travel to places we can’t, or don’t want to, go. They even have exoskeletons they allow soldiers to carry more without the added stress. Many companies, even ones you wouldn’t expect, are making these military robots. iRobot, the company known for its autonomous vacuum, makes four remote controlled vehicles used for situational awareness, bomb control, hazmat operations, and many other things. Boeing is working on unmanned helicopters and recon planes. Even the British Army is developing …show more content…
They started the company by designing a robot for space exploration in 1991. Over the next few years they worked on developing robots to eliminate mines in surf zones. That’s when DARPA started to notice them. 2 years later, 1998, they had the PackBot. Straight from the iRobot site, the PackBot is a modular, adaptable, and expandable robot. It can perform tasks like bomb disposal, recon, and surveillance. That sparked a big advancement for iRobot. They used the PackBot in the World Trade Center attack on September 11th, 2001. iRobot used this as steps to make more robots for uses with the military. The lightweight 310 SUGV was made for bomb disposal and ordnance disposal, vehicle inspections, explosive detection, building clearing, and much more. It weighs 30 pounds and can easily be carried by a soldier. Controlled by a small tablet, it is extremely versatile. You can just set it down and use it. Their next military vehicle is the 710 Kobra. This beast can lift up to 330 pounds. Like the SUGV, it can be used for explosives and vehicle inspection. But being such a beast, it can be used to remove debris. Its arm can reach up to eleven feet. It’s easily maneuverable and can even climb stairs. Also being controlled by a tablet, it can be driven up in a vehicle and deployed easily. Their final bot is small, but not to be misunderestimated. The 110 …show more content…
It was built to be able to walk just about anywhere and can adjust to just about anything. Being 240 pounds and just over 3 feet long, it’s surprisingly versatile. It can run about 4 mile per hour and can climb up to a 35 degree slope. This gyroscopic dog can haul about 340 pounds. It can even adjust to being kicked. The LittleDog is a smaller BigDog used for research on making the BigDog better. It’s not really for the military, but it was built using the DARPA grant. The SandFlea is by far the craziest thing I’m going to talk about. Built for who know why, it is an eleven pound robot that can jump 30 feet. With an onboard camera, it could be used for surveillance. The grant for this was funded by the US Army’s Rapid Equipping Force. It can jump onto buildings and can jump about 25 times on once single charge. Overall, that’s 750

homas Nast was a political cartoonist in the 19th century. Nast was born September 27, 1840 In Germany.(biography.com) Nast used comedy as a way to get political points across to readers. He was known for exposing the corruption going on with “boss” Tweed. Tweed was a corrupt politician that bribed his way to the top, which made him more money in the long run. Tweed was ok with articles being ran about him because the vast majority of his constituents were irish immigrants and could not read.(blog.mcny.org) They could understand Nast’s cartoons though. Nast’s cartoons played a major role in incriminating Tweed. Because of Nast, we in the 21st century now have media like South Park as a way to get across deep messages in humorous ways. South

Intrinsa is a testosterone transdermal patch for treating hypoactive sexual desire disease (HSDD) in surgically menopausal women. The women whose ovaries are removed surgically experiences 50% reduction in serum testosterone level leading to HSDD. Symptoms of this disease are absence of sexual thoughts, less sexual desire and activity, developing personal distress and mental tension.
Soldier robots can also include different types of weapons and sometimes are more efficient than a human controlling these weapons.
The operations of the robots have also advanced from simple hard-stop, one-function, hydraulic actuated robots to the more sophisticated, high-precision, servo controlled robots that can be reprogrammed to do many different jobs.
would also save lives by decrease of military spending. They would saves lives by not putting them in danger and using those lives for better reasons or other safer jobs. Those served or serving in the military wouldn’t have to be putting their lives in danger for example like working in dangerous warehouses, nuclear power plants, or even around explosives. Instead of putting them in such harmful environments, using robots would be a less risk of getting into injury. For example like using the lives for being a doctor, teacher, city workers, etc. Jobs that give back to the community would be ideal instead of putting people’s lives in jobs near danger. It’d be fantastic if this were to take place causing all over the nation an aiding, improving
When people think of robots, an image of a mechanical, stiff, talking, moving, human-like machine might come to mind. Robots are, in fact, computerized machines that are ultimately utilized to simplify larger scale tasks. They include control machines, computer controllers, or microprocessor based automated systems just to name a few. The ultimate goal of industrial engineering is to expedite processes; therefore, with such developed and modern technology, the manufacturing process is more efficient, cost effective, and there is almost no human error. With all its benefits the automation and robotics movement has made way for new fetes and greater prospects in economic terms for large-scale firms.
The last short story we read, “Little Lost Robot” is what sticks out the most. The fact that the government is trying to create a robot that is able to have a modified first law gives a hint of something dangerous to come. In creating a robot that is able to watch people come to harm and not do anything hits that the government may try to create army robots in the future.due to the way the short stories progress I would not be shocked if this was an outcome. Using robots to do the dirty work of people is still wrong especially when the robots are made to be similar to
Probably the most important thing that these machines can do is save lives. As technology advances we are starting to see more and more unmanned vehicles. Such as bomb disposing robots or UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). UAV’s are capable of carrying out different types of missions without anybody in them. Since they are controlled from a base if the UAV crashes then nobody dies. Another piece is the bomb disposal robot. Bomb robots began being used in the 1970s (Baker 1). Bomb robots can either disarm bombs or rig them to explode (Baker 1). The types of robots and the technology they use has changed greatly. Today some of them have prosthetics that work just like
America is on the verge of another golden age thanks to industrial robots. Industrial grade manufacturing robots are revolutionizing industry as we know it. These mechanical machines are making possible, the mass production needed to satisfy the demand of the seven-billion people on the earth. Companies and businesses are saving millions of dollars by using industrial robots as part of their manufacturing teams. Industrial robots are beneficial to modern manufacturing in the U.S. as depicted by the many flourishing factories such as CBS Boring and Alfe.
My biggest concern is that we cannot trust these robots. We all know how technology works these days. Oh wait, it hardly works. There is always something going wrong with technology; you can never rely on it. You want to write a research paper? Well good luck, the internet is most likely bound to be down. Isn’t that what always seems to happen? You never know with technology. Why would people think robots would be any different?...
