Through the generations, technology has propelled the human race into the future. Advancements in technology have surpassed the expectations of our founding forefathers. Technology has pushed the limits of typical modern thinking and tremendously broadened the horizons of rational human beings. From cave dwellers, barely being able to survive, to astronauts landing on the moon, technology has made this advancement possible. However, advancements in technology and new inventions do not always positively affect humans. The invention of the atomic bomb, however useful in its time, has led to many unexpected consequences, and it is for these reasons that this is an invention that we can live without.

In today’s society, many countries and even citizens of the United States question the U.S. government’s decision to get involved in nuclear warfare. These people deemed it unnecessary and stated that the U.S. is a hypocrite that preaches peace, but causes destruction and death. Before and during World War II the U.S. was presented with a difficult decision on whether or not to develop and use the atomic bomb. The U.S. decided to develop the atomic bomb based on the fear they had for the safety of the nation. In August 1939 nuclear physicists sent manuscripts to Albert Einstein in fear the Germany might use the new knowledge of fission on the uranium nucleus as way to construct weapons.

When looking at the aftermath of the atomic bomb in both Nagasaki and Hiroshima the devastation it caused is evident. The majority of the population in Japan could have never imagined such a catastrophic event. On August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945 massive amounts of lives were changed forever when an atomic bomb fell from the sky and created an explosion as bright as the sun. The imminent threat of war pulled the trigger on the atomic race as it became clear that whoever could split the atom could build the atomic bomb, and whoever could build the bomb could win the war. During the mid-1900’s there were only three countries capable of splitting the atom: Germany, Japan, and the United States. The United States was able to win, but had it not have been for the sabotage of Vemork, and the saving grace of some of the greatest scientists of our time, the outcome of WW2 could have been drastically different.

The technology of building the atomic bomb has spurred some useful innovations that can be applied through the use of nuclear power. The fear of a potential nuclear attack had been heightened by the media and its release of movies impacting on public opinion and fear of nuclear devastation. The lives lost after the detonation of the atomic bombs have become warning signs that changed global thinking and caused preventative actions.
From scientific breakthroughs that revolutionized our understanding of the world to practical inventions that changed the way we live, scientific and technological developments in the 20th century have profoundly altered nearly every aspect of our lives. As the technological advancements of the twentieth-century progressed from the discovery of vaccinations to computer age technology, humans have learned to take a considerable amount of control over their lives and the environment as compared to the past, in which humans had very little control over nature. These progressions have had positive and negative effects on society. Positively, medical research has been able to allow the human race to lengthen life span and improve the work of genetics. Science has connected the globe through computer technology. The negative aspects of progression have some far-reaching consequences, such as new forms of imperialism, the atomic bomb, and destruction of the environment.
Yet at the same time science has also ruined some societies and forever has scarred the land. One of sciences greatest yet most dangerous achievements was the invention of the Atomic bomb. This device not only destroyed an entire Japanese society, but also destroyed land with radiation. We have damaged lands with nuclear fallout not only from our bombs, but from our reactors.
