An interview with My Professor Lakshmi Amarachinta, a confident woman who teaches computer science in Diablo Valley College, has laid her eyes on the evolution of technology in the past few decades. Drew on her vast knowledge in the computer science field and experience as a social network user, professor Amarachinta not only transformed her students into successful programmers but also taught them the correct way of using networks. Ms.Amarachinta was born in India, the country that is famous for its developed information technology industry. In 1992, she went to college and studied as an undergraduate in India. Guided by a family member and seeing the great need for computer engineers in the future, Ms.Amarachinta decided to take computer science as her major. During that time, internet just appeared in people’s lives as a new invention. There were no social networks, no smart phones, none of those technology products people use today existed at that time. “When I first started [using the internet], nobody used it for entertainment as people do today. The only form of electronic communication was through e-mail, even that was not common in students with other majors”, said Ms.Amarachinta. In fact, it is nearly impossible for anyone who lived in 1990s to imagine the popularity of social networking today; similarly, teenagers who grew up with electrical products could hardly understand the old way of life people used to have. She worked in a software industry for several years. “Teaching happened accidently,” she applied for a teaching position in-between her jobs and found a good work-life balance from it. Later, Ms.Amarachinta came to Diablo Valley College and became an official professor in computer science department. When I asked for her opinion on how social networks start to influence teenagers, Ms.Amarachinta shares her observation to explain her point, “there are more young students taking computer science courses in recent years. Some of them take the course just out of interest and many others take it for their majors. Although this is the very first course [in computer science], I often have students who are already familiar with programming.” As she noticed the growth in student numbers and their abilities, Ms.Amarachinta attributes such change to the prevalence of internet and social networking. While she feels glad that more and more teenagers are willing to study in this field, she sometimes worries about their behaviors and online safeties, for the fact that they sometimes get into trouble for what they did on the internet. The article ‘Web of Risks’ by Brad Stone, is about how young adults misuse social media and there are consequences. Cameron Walker, a sophomore at Fisher College had organized a petition dedicated to getting a campus security guard fired and put it on Facebook. Marc Zuckerberg designed Facebook in 2003 and it is a well-known website used worldwide. On the Facebook page Walker wrote that the security guard harassed students and needed to be eliminated. In an article written in the New England Journal of Higher Education, 2008 issue, by Dana Fleming, “Youthful Indiscretions: Should Colleges Protect Social Network Users from Themselves and Others?” Fleming poses the question of responsibility in monitoring students’ online social networking activities. Fleming’s purpose is to impress upon the readers the need for education institutions to state the guidelines and rules governing social networking, and “to treat them like any other university activity, subject to the school’s code of conduct and applicable state and federal laws” (443). She creates a dramatic tone in order to convey to her readers the idea that social networking can be sinister and their effects inescapable. Dana L. Fleming is a Boston area attorney who specializes in higher education law, with the mission of the New England Journal of Higher Education to engage and assist leaders in the assessment, development, and implementation of sound education practices and policies of regional significance. However, while Dana Fleming emphasizes the horror stories of social networking, she scatters her thoughts throughout this article springing from one idea to attempting to persuade her intended audience then juxtaposed stories about minors being hurt by poor social networking decisions contrasting the topic suggested in her title.
Fleming begins her argument by paralleling the transformative properties of the invention of the telephone years ago to social networks today (Fleming). Our world is changing gradually bringing these changes into people’s daily life styles; consequently, a person’s potential to embrace these challenges and revolutionize with them has become an important factor to analyze people’s way to prepare themselves for the future. According to Gilbert Valdez, educational technology, especially computers and computer-related peripherals, have grown tremendously and have permeated all areas of our lives. The guest list consists of Anne Hird, the author of the book Learning from Cyber Savvy Students. She researched a school called Cityview; it is a privatized, college-prepatory school for children who come from low-income families. She studied the students’ knowledge and expertise at exploring the Internet. Through one-on-one conversations with individual students, Anne found that even though the students often knew more than the teacher did, they never questioned the teacher’s authority or knowledge.
