Why do people stare at interracial couples and feel betrayed by the person of the same race? How must the couple feel when people stare at them everywhere they go? In June of 1958, a white man and a half African-American and half American-Indian woman, both native citizens of Virginia, wed in South America. Not long after the marriage the couple returned back to the state of Virginia where they decided to establish a happy family. In October of 1958 the couple received an indictment charge, stating that the marriage had violated Virginia’s law of no interracial marriages. The couple was found guilty and was sentenced to one year in jail; however, the judge saw no harm in the marriage. If the couple would leave the state of Virginia, and not come back until another twenty-five years, he would suspend the sentence. Interracial marriages go through trials and tribulations.
Family acceptance is important to interracial relationships. One way a couple can tell if their family approves of the wedding is by how many people attend the ceremony. “Of these ceremonies, whether religious or civil, the gatherings were small with only a few close relatives or friends attending” (Porterfield 103). Family members, who do not agree with interracial relationships, will show how they feel by not attending the wedding. Close family members will support the bride and groom but not the marriage itself. After the marriage, the newly weds will sense tension at one another’s family gatherings (Porterfield 105). A newlywed couple needs to feel a substantial amount of acceptance because marriage is one of the biggest steps in one’s life, and newlyweds need to know they have not made the wrong decision. In conclusion, society needs to consider the feelings of interracial couples. A person may not agree with interracial relationships, but they do not need to discriminate against them. Even today in the year 2002, society has its problems with interracial relationships. Through education and the way couples raise their children, the problem or problems facing interracial couples will diminish.

Race and ethnicity is a main factor in the way we identify others and ourselves. The real question here is does race/ethnicity still matter in the U.S.? For some groups race is not a factor that affects them greatly and for others it is a constant occurrence in their mind. But how do people of mix race reacts to this concept, do they feel greatly affected by their race? This is the question we will answer throughout the paper. I will first examine the battle of interracial relationship throughout history and explain how the history greatly explains the importance of being multiracial today. This includes the backlash and cruelty towards interracial couple and their multiracial children. Being part of a multiracial group still contains its impact in today’s society; therefore race still remaining to matter to this group in the U.S. People who place themselves in this category are constantly conflicted with more than one cultural backgrounds and often have difficulty to be accepted.
Marriage, as an institution, has evolved in the last few decades. As society progresses, the ideas and attitudes about marriage have shifted. Today, individuals are able to choose their partners and are more likely marry for love than convenience. While individuals are guaranteed the right to marry and the freedom to choose their own partners, it has not always been this way. Starting from colonial times up until the late 1960’s, the law in several states prohibited interracial marriages and unions. Fortunately, in 1967, a landmark case deemed such laws as unconstitutional. Currently, as society progresses, racism and social prejudice have decreased and interracial marriages have become, not only legal, but also widely accepted.
1. Since interracial marriage became legal in 1967, only 7.5 percent of marriages are between people of different races. This means America is progressing, but it is not yet “color-blind”. People of different races are starting to date more (which shows the progression) but it is less likely to lead to marriage, compared to same race couples. Henderson and Rockquemore talk about how Americans believe we have developed a “color-blind” society, but they don’t specify what American think that or where the information comes from. This means the Americans they are referring to could all be in same race relationships. If that is the case, then the people who it matters to the most, the people in interracial relationships, might not think the same. In the event that Okonkwo was really concerned with the moral value of not taking part in Ikemefuna’s death, then he would have attended the funeral. But, Okonkwo is more concerned about being more powerful than leaders of the other tribes. Oedipus shows similar behavior when he tells Teiresias “… it has no strength for you because you are blind in mind and ears as well as in your eyes” (Sophocles, 428 – 430). Oedipus doesn’t respect oracle’s information that is given to him and this shows that not only is he arrogant, but this addresses Oedipus’ hubris and ignorant behavior as he denies his fate. Both Oedipus and Okonkwo, are arrogant and refuse to be told to that they are wrong about anything and these tragic flaw in each character contributes to their responsibility in their demise. The connection of race and race relations in the United States was an ongoing issue, and while much progress was made, there are still people who revert back to old and ignorant takes on different races as the white man. This clearly relates to my own history based on the fact that various races are still being discriminated and treated unfairly and looked at as unequal. I can only hope that one day the whole population of the world can do the right thing and look at everyone as equals.
