The Internet is an exceptional place. Anyone can be a part of the wonders of the cyber world. By simply logging onto a network-connected computer, one can express his/her own cyber voice. From Facebook to memes to Hulu, the net has endless opportunities for entertainment, social interaction and information. But what effect does the Internet have on today’s children? A child growing up is a natural, beautiful part of life. Many aspects of the Internet can inhibit this subtle stage of life, such as social media or internet addiction. Although the Internet offers beneficial effects, the way in which today’s children use it has a negative impact on their physical and mental development.
Using the Internet for extended periods of time means less physical exercise for the user because the time normally spent for exercise is spent surfing the net. Additionally, too much internet use affects a child's social communication skills because less time is spent face-to-face with people (ottom7). A child would take a risk of being threatened by a sex offender if he/she were to put personal information on the Internet. Another negative impact that overuse of the Internet causes in children is damage to long-term memory as an effect of the availability of a vast amount of information (Carr). Having any fact or other piece of information can lead to an overload of the brain. According to www.telegraph.co.uk, “[y]oung people aged between 16 and 24 spend more than 27 hours a week on the internet.” Certainly this much internet usage would have an effect on someone. What exactly is the effect of using the internet too much? Nicholas Carr’s article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” argues that we are too reliant on the internet and it is making the us dim-witted and shortens our attention span. While Clive Thompson’s article “Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better” states that technology is not only a collection of knowledge, it also a method of sharing and recording our own knowledge. I fall between both Carr and Thompson. I agree with car on his points of us being too reliant on the internet but disagree when he states that it is making us less intelligent. On the other hand, the uncontrolled use of technology in childhood education may produce negative effects and impair development in children. Uses of technology in childhood education range from enhancing social interactions, language development to initial computer use skills. It is important to note that, technology use in children education is a matter of how it can be harnessed for the purposes of learning in children. Research by health professionals argues that technology use in children education can produce detrimental health effects especially obesity. How much technology can improve or distract from these essential skills varies with age. The impact and implications of technology tools on young children has been studied and researched through the Let’s Move Childcare initiative and results concluded that little to no “screen time” is preferred for children under the age of two. For children two years or older, the recommended “screen time” is limited to thirty minutes per week in the classroom setting. (White House, 2011.)

However, the internet is full of websites, games, even photos that could very likely have a negative effect on children and their behaviors. Also their education, speech could become affected and they could start doing badly in school or start cursing at a young age. Another thing is that their attitude towards life changes, instead of seeing it as their own giant happy playground they can view it as a very bitter and cold place and start looking, feeling, and talking negatively.
