We, humans, stare up at the night sky in wonder, curious of what it contains and in admiration of how beautiful space can be. Occasionally, we can spot a bright “dot” moving across the sky. We assume it is simply a satellite, despite it being much brighter than an usual satellite brightness. We do not realize that that supposed satellite is actually hosting a small group of people who live in and perform science experiments outside of Earth’s atmosphere. That shelter orbiting around the Earth is the International Space Station (ISS). Within the past couple of decades, NASA has been having trouble with budgeting for the programs upon the International Space Station. due to the budgeting problems. Alongside that, there are concerns with the possible cuts on the progress that they had made within their fields with the help of the International Space Station. Hence, to help humanity discover more and advance, NASA should continue being a part of the International Space Station program. The only issue of continuing it is that the costs are an excessive amount of money to keep it going. Within the past couple of decades, many problems have arisen within NASA’s plan for the International Space Station. One of the main problems is that in the early 1990’s, NASA had underestimated the amount of money they will need to complete their plan, to research on the International Space Station, because they did not take into account for any maintenance that might be required. Andrew Lawler, a reporter for a spam publication, clarifies that “...NASA will need an extra $7 billion and as much as 3 more years to complete work on its pieces of the project...” (1998). Due to NASA’s inaccuracy with their calculations a few senators that supported NASA and were debating whether or not grant them the extra $7 billion. The U.S. did not give NASA the estimated funds they said they now needed. NASA instead had to budget the original amount to be able to make repairs to the International Space Station. This budgeting caused a few research programs aboard the International Space Station to be limited or eliminated, which disappointed and irritated the scientists within those fields because they had to adjust their plans drastically to be able to continue their program. With all that considered, why should NASA continue being a part of the International Space Station program? There has already been major feats that wouldn’t have been possible without NASA being a part of the International Space Station program. There are fifteen space agencies from around the world, including NASA, working on the International Space Station. The Atlantic article by Marina Koren states, “The ISS has largely escaped the effects of political disagreements between the U.S. and Russia, making it one of the few places in the universe where Moscow and Washington can agree” (2016). Hence, because of this project, the nations are able to agree with each other on at least one topic, despite the possible bad relationships they have otherwise. In addition to the betterment of relationships between nations, Barack Obama, the President of the United States, lists a few other accomplishments that NASA has made are the discovery of “flowing water on Mars and evidence of ice on one of Jupiter's moons, and we mapped Pluto -- more than 3 billion miles away -- in high-resolution” (2016). These accomplishments show that within the past few decades, technology has increased and we are able to learn more about the universe. Although, we can also still learn about humanity and our planet as well through the International Space Station program. By continuing the International Space Station program, NASA can research ways in that help benefit humanity.
For example, due to NASA’s involvement in the International Space Station program they were able to send an astronaut up into space and live there for an entire year, creating a new record for a single person to be living in space. They are currently studying how the astronaut was effect due to living in space for a year. They are comparing his body’s reactions on being back on Earth to the body of his twin brother, who stayed on Earth. It is apparent that NASA is trying to figure out the safest way for humanity to live in space for long durations of time. Another instance where humanity is benefits from the International Space Station program is the use of technology that was developed for the space program can now be used for eye surgery. It helps accurately perform the surgery with almost no malfunctions or errors. Finally, due to the space station, people can observe disasters that happen on Earth. The book International Space Station: Benefits for Humanity explains that this is important because “The SERVIR project [NASA/US Agency for International Development] provides satellite data and tools to environmental decision makers in developing countries and operates” (n.d.). Hence, this demonstrates the idea that we, as a society, can make accurate and helpful decisions when it comes to helping the environment and in turn ourselves. NASA is already in the process of helping humanity even more by creating a plan for the
future. In recent years, Nasa has developed a plan for the future of space travel and set goals to accomplish through the help of the International Space Station. In order to accomplish their goals they must rebuild the entire space program. One goal is to have people on missions beyond a low orbit of Earth for long periods of time. Two of their plans for this goal is to send astronauts to an asteroid by the year 2025 and have people on Mars by the 2030s. The article Obama Administration Extends International Space Station to 2024 states that “The ISS extension will give NASA and its private-sector partners time to more fully transition to the commercial space industry the transportation of cargo and crew to low-Earth-orbit, allowing NASA to focus on developing the next-generation heavy-lift rocket and crew capsule necessary for deep-space exploration.” (2014). According to this article, NASA is receiving some funds from private donors and they plan to use that money to explore further out in space. Deep-space exploration has always been humankind's dream. Hence, to have a plan for it to happen soon is exciting and inspiring. Space exploration has always been a dream for many people.. The International Space Station helps fulfils that dream for those who followed that dream. Although, within the past few decades NASA has been having trouble coming up with funding for the research conducted on the International Space Station and its maintenance. Despite the funding issue, NASA should continue being a part of the International Space Station program. The International Space Program has helped humanity in more ways than one. It’s help conflicting countries to be able to get along in a few ways. It has created technology that has improved the way we do things. NASA’s plans for the future are only set to end less than a decade away, but, for the benefits of humanity, it should continue past their end date.
NASA is being underfunded and its funding should be substantially increased to make ends meet. This trend needs to be changed and re-evaluated. About $2.9 trillion is spent on health care alone (Millman). The U.S. government spends a mere $17.7 billion on NASA and spends more than 36 times that on defense $647 billion, with nearly $20 billion alone in 2011 spent on air conditioning tents. Since NASA’s Cold War glory days, the budget has gone from 4.41% of the total budget in 1966, to less than 0.45% today, its lowest ever.
The moment astronauts set foot on Earth’s Moon, in July of 1969, the legacy of the United States’ space program changed forever. Countless Americans watched the launch and landing of Apollo 13 on their televisions with pride on that day, proud of their country for achieving such an insane goal as walking on the Moon. While NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, struggled through obstacle after obstacle, invented new technologies and advanced old ones, placed the first man on the Moon, because the Soviet Union threatened to beat the U.S. to the space frontier, the nation greatly congratulated the feat that began the technological era. After forty-five years, however, the awe Americans held over NASA’s programs dwindled considerably. Although NASA no longer holds the nation in awe over their moon mission achievements, NASA programs remain vital to the United States because they advance everyday technologies, inspire creative visions, and discover greater knowledge for the entire public to benefit from.
This essay is being written to prove that NASA spending has a negative impact on American society. Continuing NASA and the programs run by it is harmful to American society and Government. NASA harms the economy. NASA also harms the environment in which we live. And the money that NASA spends could be used to help solve problems in our country, not on another planet.
The most common misconception people have is that NASA doesn’t really do anything for us anymore. Completely to the contrary; NASA is like a plant. Just like a plant takes in CO2 then puts out life giving oxygen as a byproduct, so does NASA take in existing “primitive” technology and world issues and put out life saving applications as a by-product. If anyone has been alive anytime after 1958 you have benefited from at least 30 of NASA’s 30,000 different applications. They’ve created fire-fighting gear, laser heart surgery, and weather satellites that prevent the deaths of thousands because of forewarned hurricanes.
In NASA Technologies Benefit Our Lives, a list of several inventions such as the LED, infrared ear thermometer, artificial limbs and various other inventions over the period of the space race are listed (1). The items that were invented because of the accomplishments made during the space race are used by millions of people each day; we owe much credit to the space race. An example in “How Have Advances in Space Technology Helped Us on Earth,” discusses how we use technology today that has been on the moon to get images of the earth and that is how we get images of our homes, our oceans, our weather, and even how we get a TV signal (1). One can see in “Rockets and Spacecraft,” that much of the technology that has been mentioned earlier could only be possible because of rockets that were launched in 1957 that contained artificial satellites (1). A summary of all that happened during the space race that helped the United States is given in the article “Space Program Benefits: NASA’s Positive Impact on Society,” ” We see the transformative effects of the Space Economy all around us through numerous technologies and life-saving capabilities” (1). The space race impacted the technology of the United States in an overwhelmingly positive way that is still being felt
One reason that NASA help us is by studying our world. If we don’t know or study NASA and study thing outer space we don’t know what the Earth look like. Outer our planet there other plants too.
The space race had a great historical significance for the U.S. and the whole world. On the surface, it seemed as a battle of science and technology. In reality, it was actually a political battle between the world’s two major superpowers and their economic systems, an ideological battle between communism and capitalism. So, was the space race a waste of time? Could all those millions of dollars have been better invested in something else? Maybe, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that the space race stimulated research in many fields, and this research brought to many life changing developments. LED therapy to treat cancer, freeze-dried food, and the memory foam used in mattresses all resulted from the technologies developed by NASA for space. And let’s not forget to thank the space program for the much needed satellites for our GPS and cell phones!
For example, if NASA or another organization finds a way to effectively convert salt contaminated water to fresh drinkable water, our problem regarding water shortage will subside. Maybe NASA found a way to have cars or some other form of transportation run on soil, sand, or grass (very unlikely but it is possible). NASA would need workers to build these devices, which would create many low-income jobs across the country. Continued funding for NASA and other scientific organizations will fix the social injustice problems of the world.
Detractors of public sector space agencies like NASA frequently argue that expending money and resources on sending humans into space is wasteful and irresponsible during shaky economic times. After all, in 2010 the U.S. Census Bureau in recorded 46.2 million people in poverty, the largest number in the 52 years the figure has been published. Putting tax dollars into a shuttle and sending it on an extraplanetary voyage is uneconomical in the eyes of many. However, beneficial developments of the space program can be found in airports, hospitals, laboratories, and homes around the world. Since we first sent rockets into Earths orbit, we have been pushing the technological boundaries in order to reach new heights. Space exploration has caused advances in almost every field imaginable. We have seen new technology in the fields of telecommunications, innovative new light-weight materials, rockets and aircraft material. Space exploration by nature causes innovation because the need for “increased performance in space… usually means getting more out of less” (Crusan & Neumann, 2011). These size and weight constraints on materials and equipment have lead to the creation of devices that we use everyday like water filters, scratch resistant lenses, and memory foam. The newest advancement in NASA’s long list of innovations is the International Space station (ISS). The ISS a long-term micro-gravity research station that helps us get closer to eventually making a journey to other planets. Most people think that the costly downside to funding space exploration is a reason to avoid spending money on sciences and instead spend it on problems here on earth, but such funding for space exploration actually promotes economical as well as scientific benefits. Space exploration is an important expenditure for the high cost because of the potential for numerous benefits such as the possibility to find useful resources to cultivate, space exploration and satellites produce many thousands of jobs in our economy, and it creates and discovers newer and better technologies through research and development.
Space exploration is very beneficial to humankind because it creates new technologies, it brings different countries together, and gives people a better understanding of our Earth.
By being in a very technologically advanced era, scientists can invent revolutionary devices never thought of. NASA is doing that right now and has been doing that since it began. They are not only climbing the stairs in space exploration but in the medical industry, too. Nevertheless, they are forever changing millions of lives by using all they have discovered. Most of all, they are teaching people a life lesson, to always use the things you have for the greater good. NASA has achieved profound success ever since their start in 1958 and they will continue to make discovery and innovation their first and foremost goal for years to come.
