Integrating the Arts
Integrating arts with other subjects is very important because using art can help students become more engaged in the subjects, embrace their learning and retain knowledge. Art allows children to learn and have fun at the same time. By having arts as a subject child can develop their physical, cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional domains. For example, in a math class, students are learning fractions by examining the composition in Warhol's Campbell's soup paintings. Children are able to enthusiastically participate in the learning process and have fun at the same time. This is further proof of how children can learn and have fun at the same time. Arts can engage children and help them to remember the concepts better.
An example of that is the alphabet song, a child can listen to the song three times and after he/she listens the song a fourth time, the child is able to say part of the alphabet. Not just for children, also for teenagers and adult arts subjects can help students retain their knowledge. For example, in an eighth-grade math class, students prepared for a test on linear equations by creating photo stories of the steps involved, by doing the photo stories students are going to retain some of the linear equations. Arts can be used as a form of therapy and as a way to explore identities within students. People are so reluctant to integrate the arts with other subjects because they define art as an “elective” and not a core subject. Some people think that one has be talented in order for them to be involved in the arts. For example, a girl is an art class, but she is not good painting and drawing, people think that she should get out of that class just because she is not good as good. People usually mathematics, English and science as a priority, but they don’t know the importance of art and how it can help in the development of an individual.
The first painting analyzed was North Country Idyll by Arthur Bowen Davis. The focal point was the white naked woman. The white was used to bring her out and focus on the four actual colored males surrounding her. The woman appears to be blowing a kiss. There is use of stumato along with atmospheric perspective. There is excellent use of color for the setting. It is almost a life like painting. This painting has smooth brush strokes. The sailing ship is the focal point because of the bright blue with extravagant large sails. The painting is a dry textured flat paint. The painting is evenly balanced. When I look at this painting, it reminds me of settlers coming to a new world that is be founded by its beauty. It seems as if they swam from the ship.
In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700’s and the early 1900’s. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee-Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition.
Rhys Southan’s essay “Is Art a Waste of Time?” is about art and if it can really help people who are suffering or is it just better to hand over your money. In Yo-Yo Ma’s essay “necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” he focuses more on art being used as educational purposes to essentially create more innovative/empathetic people. Instead of focusing so much on STEM, the author states that we should incorporate art too. Although some people might say art does not play a role in making the world a better place. I believe it can by bringing awareness to different social issues. Also, if we incorporate art at a young age it can teach kids to be open minded and happier people.
It may seem impossible to include art in an academic setting, but it is possible, effective, and fun. According to Barry Oreck, it has been proven that students learning molecular bonding through dance have a more proficient understanding of the concept. He states, “We have found that if you learn something through a theater game, you can still answer a test question” (New Horizons Dickerson 3). This statement proves that the arts are extremely important and beneficial. With fine arts, students have a safe environment to express themselves, a motivation to stay in school, and higher test scores.
It can be written in the text form of literature and poetry, enacted in the form of music and theatre, and drawn on a canvas through art and sculpture. This concept is illustrated in, “The Cultural Importance of the Arts.” Susan Langer was a notable 20th century American philosopher who mainly focused her work on artistic expression and linguistic analysis. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.

Throughout this chapter it discusses the knowledge about artists and how their artworks can inspire elementary students. Also, help the students have a better understanding of an idea, thought, or feeling expressed in some form.

It can help them use their knowledge and come up with extraordinary ideas to make big changes in the world, and it can also keep students away from bad things and be better human beings by doing what they are interested in.
Summary/ Review: The arts provide life skills that can spark career interests, no matter what the job entails, builds teamwork and personal relationships, and also provide brain stimulation which in turn helps student benefit academically.
Art Education is not always valued in school settings. Although some may see it as an unnecessary use of school funding, there are many who believe it is beneficial to students in more ways than one. There are many different studies that have been conducted to test the effects that art education has on school-aged children. Some studies have proven that art education can help students to improve in other academic areas. In a journal article from Ohio State University’s “Theory in Practice,” Karen A Hamblen states, “There are linkages between art learning and learning in other subjects areas and that art study can promote creative behaviors, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement.” It has also been found that the arts can teach children better self-regulatory strategies, and even foster more confidence and self-efficacy in school which relates to confidence in academics. Overall, art education in schools has been very beneficial and has proven to ignite creativity, confidence, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement in students.
Kids also learn planning and problem-solving skills which will greatly benefit them in their future. Art can be used to reinforce other disciplines. Pouring glue, creating ceramics, and mixing paint can help teach scientific principles. Sorting, patterning, and categorizing can help reinforce math skills.
