Insecurity and Self-Esteem

Insecurity drills a hole into a person’s heart, minimizes their integrity, and accumulates as plaque build up, hindering any kind of future growth. Just as any human being’s growth is stifled by the insecurity within them, the United States as a whole suffers the same from its own tremendous amount of insecurity. This lack of acknowledgement of self-worth causes a ghastly chain reaction; people tend to pursue the wrong ideals, become corrupt, and inevitably lead themselves to their own demise. Insecurity is a route to destruction, and America is speeding down that road to dissolution.

The dictionary’s definition of insecurity is: “ uncertainty or anxiety about oneself; lack of confidence”("Insecurity," Oxford English Dictionary). If something is characterized by the feeling of anxiety and by lack of confidence, it seems obvious that nothing good can come from it. With any copy of a dictionary as proof, the human race has hereby proclaimed insecurity as something negative; why then would we all continue to make others insecure or ourselves live in a state of insecurity? It doesn’t make any sense to see that one of the things that America has deemed as a negative influence, is in fact one of the biggest epidemics the United States has.

Insecurity in many cases is known as lack of self-esteem, and self-esteem as talked described by many psychologists, is very important. Kendra Cherry, a well known writer, went on to cite psychotherapist Nathaniel Branden who is most known for his work in the psychology of self-esteem in her article, What Is Self-Esteem? , saying:

According to one definition (Braden, 1969), there are three key components of self-esteem:

There are many songs, poems, and art works done as a way to ask for help like this song, all of which show how insecurity in America has become a horrific disease.

Through out history, literature has been used to tell the story of mankind, and when it comes to insecurity in America, many authors were not afraid talk about it in their novels, though many of their characters. Two great examples of this are The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby himself is one of the main example of insecurity, throughout the whole book, we as the reader see how much he does with his money for so many people just so he can make them like him.
