A. 1. Inpatient coders are responsible for reviewing all patients charts for correctness, and transmitting all codes in to the computer system. Accurate information such as why the patient was in the facility, proper diagnosis, all treatments performed and medication given are coded into the computer system. It is the inpatient coders duty to make sure all information is precise. The inpatient coder must be familiar with their facilities Policies and procedures, when entering information into the computer system. Coders must have good communication skills. Allowing them to resolve issues with proper staff, when they run into documentation errors. To qualify for an inpatient coder, one must have a high school diploma. Human Resources are able to go through the Resumes and find qualified candidates. Once a candidate is found, Human Resources is able to run a sequence of pre-employment test such as achievement, cognitive, integrity and pre-employment drug testing. Once the HR department is able to verify if the individual is fit for the position then the interviewing process may begin. Human Resources is able to guide the Coding manager through proper interviewing practices. They may suggest using the standard approach with preset questions, the behavioral approach which involves the candidate providing examples of previous experiences or a panel interview allowing a few staff members to conduct the interview at once. The Human Resources Department may be able to help with proper interview question. Age, religion, and marital status should be left out of the interview. Human resources may also assist by provide background checks such as contacting previous employers and reference checks. When the Coding manager has made their decision on a prospective hire. The Human Resource department is able to finalize all the new hire documentation. CDM Committee will evaluate for all accuracy in charge description numbers. The Committee will assure all codes are in compliance with the CMS and other reimbursement agencies. The Charge Description Master Committee will also make changes to the system as changes to the facilities procedures and equipment are upgraded.
