A major question that has been asked ever since the creation of AA, people have questioned Bill Wilson’s theory on Alcoholism; whether it’s a disease or a spiritual problem. In addition to the question of the origins of alcoholism another question is if the “Big Book” and 12 step program about alcohol or about finding God. This paper is about Alcoholics Anonymous and how the organization treats alcoholism as a disease that it impossible to cure unless the individual finds God. I believe that AA operates in a fashion similar to that of a cult because of what the book teaches and the message that AA members are instructed to carry out.
The phrase “early A.A.” refers to the early fellowships and meetings held in Akron, Ohio. These meetings took place between 1935 and 1939 when Alcoholics Anonymous was an integral part of “A First Century Christian Fellowship” (Pitman 56). A.A. was the outcome of a meeting between Bill W., a New York stockbroker, and Dr. Bob S., an Akron surgeon. Both had been hopeless alcoholics (Fingarette 14).

The point of a rehabilitation center for addicts is it is a place for people who are struggling with substance abuse can go to for help. Substance abuse addiction is a growing problem in the United States and causes many problems socially and economically. The words “alcoholic” or “drug addict” carry a negative connotation. An alcoholic is not considered a role model for kids. But, what can be said about the programs and processes in place that are supposed to help addicts? Through my research, I have examined the current addiction rehabilitation centers, and I believe there needs to be a restructuring of the existing strategies used to help addicts.

Many people feel that is it easier to be an addict than to be a recovering addict. Alcoholics Anonymous When I saw the Alcoholics Anonymous assignment on our syllabus earlier this semester I thought, "Oh my god, I have to go to some stupid AA meeting. " In the weeks prior to attending the meeting, I was very nervous about attending it because I did not know what to expect. Some of the questions going through my mind were: "Was everyone expected to talk at the meeting?" and "Was I going to be criticized as the outsider wanting to know what AA was all about?"
Furthermore, each alternative has its advantages and disadvantages. Trying to solve this problem completely alone is probably the worst solution. A person receives no outside support or help. A rehabilitation/recovery center is expensive but provides strict daily routine and continuous professional guidance and support. The patient is away from family and his normal life; therefore, he may resort back to alcohol when he is back in the "real world".

Relapse prevention has been proven to reduce an offender’s propensity to relapse by teaching offenders pro-social skills that will allow them to avoid and escape high risk situations. Most importantly, according to the evidence from the study, we are now able to suggest that the reduction in the drug offender’s odds of recidivism is enhanced when paired with post treatment after care type programs after the offender has completed initial treatment and been released from community supervision (Belenko et al., 2004). Rehabs offer a wide range of various Treatments, inpatient, outpatient, residential and partial hospitalization, and counselling. When an addict relapses and returns to his or hers old ways which can eventually kill them, the rehab centre is not at fault. It is actually the addicts own fault. The prime reasons for relapse are the facts that the addict wasn’t open in counselling, didn’t accept his addiction, wasn’t receptive or just wasn’t ready to confront his problems. Mr. Fahie is a prime example that rehab centres work. He was addicted to alcohol, crack cocaine and marijuana and still managed to be recover from his addiction of twenty years in only six weeks. Applying the information learnt in treatment and revealing emotions and problems in counselling helps in addiction recovery.
