There isn’t one person in this world who isn’t damaged. But, there are more damaged people out there than others. Inman being one of them. A damaged person could’ve had a rough past or is going through a rough patch in their life. It is their choice whether or not they strive afterwards and be a hero or if they let it drag them down into a pit of despair. Inman sort of let himself go into that pit. When you think of a mythological hero, you think of someone who was a savior during a war, someone who battles through a rough time. Usually the hero will have some disasters during their journey and will receive help from supernatural sources. Inman was a deserter not a savior, he wanted to go to Cold Mountain, to find himself. During the war he didn’t do anything extraordinary. Inman faced a lot of setbacks on his journey to Cold Mountain, breaking him beyond repair. Unlike Odysseus in “The Odyssey”, where he was a war hero and was trying to get back to his family. …show more content…
Inman was always in trouble on his was to Cold Mountain, constantly being shot at, people holding him back, himself, and plenty more.
However, he received help from a couple of people, for example: the ferry girl. She helped Inman cross the river. When they were crossing the river in her canoe, they encountered “the Whitworth [as] Inman thought” (Frazier 88). The ferry girl ended up saving both of their lives when she “threw her weight to rock the canoe hard” (89). The ferry girl was quick witted and showed Inman the way west when they were safe from danger. In mythology, the River Styx is a river to the Underworld. The River Styx is ferried by Charon, he helps take Odysseus to the Underworld so he can get back to Ithaca. The ferry girl represents Charon. River Styx resembles a harsh place, going from a living world to one that is dark and unpleasant, but for Inman it was the opposite, he was going from the dark unpleasant place to finding
himself. Inman was constantly getting himself into trouble in someway. After he took a bullet to his head that passed through Veasey, Inman was hardly strong enough to continue up to Cold Mountain. A blessing for Inman was the goat lady. It was when Inman was with the goat lady when he finally stated to someone that he wanted Ada. He talking to the goat lady when he said, “the verdict he had come to at the hospital [that] he loved [Ada] and wished to marry her” (278). The goat lady was sort of like the goddess, Circe, for Odysseus. Circe showed Odysseus hospitality like the goat lady did for Inman. Circe helped Odysseus overcome his quest through her advice. Without her, he never would’ve made it to Ithaca. Without the goat lady’s medicine, Inman may have never gained the strength to continue up to Cold Mountain. In many ways Inman can be compared to Odysseus when it comes to getting help. However, Inman doesn’t match up with Odysseus in more characteristic ways. Odysseus was loyal, he fought through the war till the end, whereas Inman deserted the Civil War. A major difference between these two is Odysseus was a war hero, Inman was a coward. He was too damaged to return to the war. Inman was helped out by a number of people that led him back to Ada, even though he died. Inman seemed to cut himself short of his journey, he originally wanted to find himself, he didn’t do that. In the end, Inman met some of the criteria to be considered a mythological hero. On the other hand, Inman was so broken from the horrific war, watching a little boy, old man, and Veasey killed by the Home Guard, and shooting three Home Guardsmen. All in all, yes, Inman’s death was a damnation. He wasn’t going to make it with the Federals if he turned himself in. Inman struggled to find himself and fell short, he only found Ada.

Inman’s journey has been both negatively affected (Veasey) and positively affected (Sara). In my opinion, for all of the bad things that happen to Inman, something good happens. The best example of this is Veasey. Inman puts up with Veasey and his annoying habits for so long, and he saves his life in the end. Therefore, even the negative influences that Inman experiences on his odyssey, result in a positive outcome.
After the incident with the bag of winds it is reasonable for Odysseus to have trust issues, but when it is a matter of life and death, Odysseus is witless. After being punished by Zeus because some of his crew ate Helios’ cattle Odysseus drifts in the ocean until he lands on Calypso’s island. 7 years pass and Odysseus can finally leave after he crafts a ship, after he leaves and sails for a bit, Poseidon sees it as a time to get revenge for his son Polyphemus. Poseidon completely wrecks Odysseus’ ship when he is close to the land of the Phaeacians. A goddess named Ino sees this and offers Odysseus help.
The great epic, Homer's Odyssey, is a tale of an adventure; a journey through the mind body and soul. Odysseus was strong throughout his voyage and was able to conquer his obstacles thanks to the help from the Goddess Athena. Athena provided physical and emotional support for this man, to get him on his way home to Ithaka. She also provided this same support for Odysseus' son, Telemakhos. Without her involvement, "The Odyssey" would not have turned out the way it did; because she plays such a crucial role in the story. It is understood that Odysseus is the primary character in this epic; concerning his fears and eventually returning to his home, Ithaka. The only reason this was possible is because he had the help of the clever and intelligent Goddess, Athena.
Divine intervention is often an integral part of ancient epic poetry as seen in Homer's The Odyssey. The role of the goddess Athena was an essential part of Odysseus's journey back to Ithaka. Athena also played a vital part in Telemakhos's life before the return of his father. Even Penelope is impacted by the help of the "grey-eyed" goddess, often inspiring Penelope to hold off the suitors as well as putting her to sleep when a situation became too difficult. Athena demonstrates that she is a critical component of development within the father Odysseus and his son Telemakhos as well as guiding Penelope as a beautiful mother waiting for the return of her husband.
In the Greek myth, Orpheus has to travel through the five rivers of Hades (Phlegethon, Acheron, Lethe, Styx, and Cocytus) to retrieve Eurydice from the overseer of the underworld, Hades. In Black Orpheus, Orpheus does not travel through the actual rivers, but in my opinion, symbolic representations of them. The obstacles that Orpheus faces while trying to find Eurydice, could possibly be the representation of the rivers.
The Odyssey is a tale that has changed literature and storytelling. In this tale Odysseus is a Soldier from the battle of Troy trying to get home to his island of Ithaca, where he is king. His wife and son must wait ten years while he is trying to make his way home. In Odysseus’s absence wooer’s, or better known as suitors, learn of his absence and travel to Ithaca to win his wife’s hand in marriage. These men come every day feasting on Odysseus’s food and wine, and give his servant’s orders. His son Telemachus, does his best to keep the suitors from ruining his fathers house but he is only a boy, and doesn’t receive the respect of an adult. Telemachus then has a visit from the god Athena, whom Odysseus is friends with, who advises him to travel to find out about his father. In his travels he hears that Odysseus may still be alive. Meanwhile Odysseus goes through a series of adventures and hardships that prove his wisdom. It is interesting in contrast of the Iliad, even though Achilles was much stronger and a better warrior, Odysseus was portrayed as a greater hero due to his wisdom. He uses this wisdom to escape from the Cyclops.
The vision of the underworld portrayed in Dante’s Inferno and The Odyssey share many similarities. Both Dante and Odysseus confidently travel to the underworld because a woman, with whom they have had an intimate instructs them to. In The Odyssey, Circe instructs Odysseus to “make [his] own wa...

Cyrus McCormick was an American inventor who invented the reaper. The reaper was a farming tool that helped Farmers all through the US. It was a tool for cutting and harvesting grain. McCormick started working on this machine in 1820. By the time 1831, when the actual machine could be used, the reaper could cut six acres of oats in one day. The reaper could also cut 20 acres of Wheat in a day. It was a device pulled by four horses and could do the work of six men. Since he knew his invention would do well, he set up his headquarters in Chicago, where he sold thousands of these reapers. Later he entered the reaper into London’s Great Exhibition, where he won first prize and made him an instant celebrity, making $1.25 million in profits.

During Odysseus’ long and strenuous journey to make it back home to Ithaca, he encountered a countless number of dangers. Odysseus started off his voyage with an unwelcomed greeting from the Cyclopes, who swallowed a handful of Odysseus’ shipmates. Nevertheless, Odysseus and the remainder of the surviving shipmates escaped and rowed closer to their home. As the sailors advanced towards Ithaca, they faced the angered sun god Helios, sly sirens that tried to lure them to their deaths, and deadly whirlpools. The desperate men came across powerful winds and crashing waves, but they barely managed to get past it. Coming close to the end of the mens’ treacherous expedition, Zeus shot a bolt directly to their ship, and Odysseus was blown back to the
Instead of providing a means for life to flourish, rivers in Odyssey further hardship and provide passage to death. When Odysseus is faced with a journey to Hades’ house, he must travel a branch of the water of Styx to complete his mission. The River Styx ferries souls of the dead to the Underworld, symbolizing an ending to life and a passage to death. In this situation the River hinders Odysseus’s homecoming as it marks another hazardous journey, emphasized by how the dead react to Odysseus’s presence in the Underworld: “Not even you can ever top this, this bold foray into Hades”, since so few living beings accomplish the feat (Od 11: 493-4). Odysseus’s “bold foray into Hades” includes “[crossing] many rivers, great bodies of water, nightmarish streams”, all various forms of rivers ultimately hampering Odysseus’s nostos (Od 11: 155-6). The abundance of rivers and their impedance on Odysseus’s journey contrasts the notion that rivers encourage purification and beneficial transitions. Odysseus becomes more fatigued when dealing with the delaying rivers, never transformed or enlightened, their purposes being to setback his
