Plato stated that Atlantis laid west of the Pillars of Hercules, located in the Atlantic Ocean. On this great island was a "great and wonderful empire" where virtuous and brave individuals lived in a kind of paradise. But this peaceful existence was not to last. The city came to an end when the people of Atlantis began to love power and greed more than the Gods. They then waged war against the rest of the world. However, they were defeated by the wise and moral Athenians. Then, about 9,000 years before Plato's own time, or possibly around 9,500 B.C.E., earthquakes essentially sunk Atlantis into the …show more content…
Many people view Atlantis as just a legend, told by Plato in order to praise the values Athenian society held very dear. There are others, however, that believe that the island was based on historical fact. Some have even argued that Atlantis was located in the Americas, Antarctica, and in the Canary Islands. Others believe Atlantis was the Greek island of Thera, a theory fed by recent archaeological discoveries. The Thera Theory (Slide: 4) During the late 1960's, Professor Spyridon Marinatos of the University of Athens discovered the remains of a Bronze Age city near Akrotiri, on the island of Thera (aka Santorini). The city's buildings, streets, pottery, and wall art seemed to indicate that it was a wealthy society much like the Minoan civilization of nearby Crete. However, around 1500 B.C.E., a devastating volcanic eruption, much greater than the one that covered Pompeii, covered the city under approximently 15 feet of ash. So was Thera the land of Atlantis? There are some who believe that Plato was actually describing Thera, but believed that he was wrong regarding its precise location and the date of its destruction. Some researchers also believe that translations of his own writings may have been misunderstood. So if Plato did not completely make up the story of the Lost city of Atlantis, it may have its origins in ancient Egyptian records that described the events at
I believe the Mycenaean’s took advantage of the confused Minoans to invade, burning most of the palaces and keeping Knossos as the head installation. We know the Mycenaean’s are a war-like people, so the concept of invasion is not out of character. Their invasion is proved by the new pottery and introduction of Linear B tablets.

The ruins of Ephesus can be found today on the west coast of the country of Turkey. Ephesus was a port city for the west coast of Asia during the period of the New Testament. “The city of Ephesus was aptly called the “mother city” of Asia because of her influence over the politics, commerce, and religious atmosphere of the province. Ephesus was the headquarters of the Roman proconsul and the seat of the “Confederacy” of the Greeks in Asia. ” Ephesus had a thriving economy which drew people from the rural areas and poorer cities to it. Ephesus was renowned throughout the world for the temple of Diana (Artemis), for skill in sorcery and magic, and as a destination spot for people from all the surrounding countries. Ephesus was multiethnic and religiously pluralistic. Paul reportedly labored for nearly three years (AD 52-55 /AD 54-57 ) in Ephesus during which time the word of the Lord spread to “all the residents of Asia,” (Acts19:10).

The father of the modern world perception of Atlantis is Plato (circa 428- circa 347 b.c.). 1. The Greek philosopher spoke in his works Timaeus and Critias of a continent in the Atlantic Ocean larger than Africa and Asia Minor combined which rivaled Athens as the most advanced in the world. 2. According to the legend surrounding Platos dialogues, the island of Atlantis was violently thrown into the sea by the forces of nature, and its few survivors managed to swim ashore and relate their story.
Plato (c.424–328 B.C.) described Atlantis as a powerful and advanced kingdom that sank, in one night and one day, into the ocean around 9,600 B.C. Its culture is said to have been highly advanced and it is alleged that it had a constitution similar to the one outlined in Plato’s “Republic.” It was protected by the god Poseidon, who made his son Atlas king and namesake of the island and the ocean that surrounded it. The Atlanteans were a moral society but, as they grew powerful, their ethics declined and it is said that they were not at all kind to each other. The following notes are from a regression therapy by Michael Matthews gives an example of this: "I am in Atlantis.
The tale highlights a massive continent that had strong trade ties with the rest of the known world at the time such as Egypt and Athens. The tale also states that the civilisation was advanced, cultured and finally it vanished within a day after its actions had angered the gods in particular Poseidon. Atlantis was implied to be some constellation price for Poseidon after failing to take Athens from Athena. The text states that Poseidon created Atlantis to house his mortal wife, in which the centre island protected her. The tale also states that Poseidon had 10 off spring who then divided up Atlantis
The Nereides dwelt with their elderly father Nereus in a silvery cavern at the bottom of the Aegean Sea. The Nereid Thetis was their unofficial leader, and Amphitrite was the queen of the sea.
Plato gave the first and principal written account of Atlantis in his dialogues, “Critias” and “Timaeus”. In his description, Atlantis was a huge island located near the Straits of Gibraltar. In this island, there was a great empire which had flourished more than nine thousand years earlier. Atlantean residents had extraordinary intelligence. Their society was far more advanced than any other civilization at that time. The wealth of Atlantis was so unimaginable that even the walls were covered in gold. Furthermore, Atlantis had a huge trading network and a powerful navy. But with the passage of time, the Atlanteans became more and more arrogant, and they even wanted to rule the whole world. They were defeated by brave Athens soldiers. After that, fatal earthquakes and floods occurred in Atlantis; and in a single day and night, the island of Atlantis was swallowed up by the sea.
