Recommended: The nutcracker ballet essay report

Today I had the opportunity to watch The Nutcracker, a Christmas themed ballet choregraphed by George Balanchine and performed by the New York City Ballet. I have watched many other variations of this ballet. But this performance has topped all of them. The Nutcracker is broken up into two acts. The first act involves a Christmas party, Marie getting her beloved nutcracker as a present, and the Nutcracker coming alive to take Marie to a magical land. The second act involves the Sugar Plum Fairy and her subjects entertaining the Nutcracker and Marie. The dancers, music, and the stage props were stunning. I tried my best to only pay attention to the performers on stage, but the music kept capturing my attention. Tchaikovsky’s music throughout

With costumes that were elaborately designed to bring out the characteristics of each actor and actress, the overall mood of the performance was admirable. The set of the performance was spectacular; there were fog machines, smooth velvet couches, and accurate, bright lighting. Dancers were able to communicate to the audience without the usage of verbal sounds. They were able to efficiently tell a story through their facial expressions and their dramatic movements, keeping the attention of the audience throughout most of the show. There were elements that were incorporated into the dances that we had learned in our ballet unit, such as demi-plies, degages, and echappes, so it was much more interesting because we could somehow relate to the dancers.

The candor of Pippin’s discovery of what is truly meaningful to his heart is a great ending and gives a warm-fuzzy feeling to the audience. This musical is most worthwhile and contains all the elements of a great production.

    This piece was based slightly on swing dancing as apparent in the costumes and choreography. The choreographer of this was Joshua L. Peugh. The composers of the music used are Tommy Duncan, Dorothy Fields, Jimmy McHugh, and Bob Wills. My favorite part of the piece was when one of the performers walked across the stage carrying a cactus that would get bigger each time she walked across the stage. This both helped separate each small dance from each other but also added a sense of comedy and a familiar transition throughout the piece for the audience. The performer did this five times and by the final entrance the cactus was easily clearing her head. I liked how this piece from group dances to couple dances and flowed very well. The overall mood of this dance was lively and fun. Another moment that stood out was when the strings of lights came out at the final of the piece. This added a touch of warmth and added to the swing, country feel of the dance. Because I am classically trained in ballet, I appreciate turn out and piles between steps; however, I thought that this piece successfully told a story.
