I. Sporteology.com ranks tennis as one of the top five most popular sports, which has about one billion fans worldwide.

II. I have been playing tennis for three years, all of which have been for the Tomah High School Varsity tennis team. Almost everything that I know about tennis I have learned from my tennis coach Andrew Johnson.

III. Today I will be showing you a basic tennis shot known as the forehand, which is probably the first shot that any tennis player would learn.

IV. The forehand is considered to be one of the easiest shots to learn and will be used most often in a match.

V. There are a few aspects that need to be discussed before the forehand can be successfully attempted. Those include positioning, grip, and swing. Transition: …show more content…

Perform a split step, which is jumping one or two inches to get yourself on your toes and ready to make a move.
2. Stand in the proper ready stance with feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent. 3. Holding your racket out in front of you will allow you to easily swing from either side of your body, but for the forehand you will only be swinging from the dominant hand side.

Transition: After getting in the correct position to return the ball, the next essential portion of the forehand is having a good grip.

II. Grip
A. The three most popular forehand grips include Eastern, Semi-Western, and Western. 1. Eastern grip allows for a flatter shot, but will not allow for much spin.
2. Semi-Western grip allows you to hit with both speed and spin, but less speed than the Eastern grip and less spin than the Western grip. 3. Western grip allows for the most spin but won’t be as fast as either of the other two grips. B.
