Cancer is a little timer that hits you in the face and informs you that, “You are only a mortal." For a fact, not all cancer can lead to death, such as benign tumors, but most are life threatening. In estimate, there were about five hundred eighty-nine thousand four hundred and thirty (589,430) cancer deaths in the United States during the year 2015 and a total of one million six hundred fifty-eight thousand three hundred and seventy (1,658,370) new cases of cancer diagnosed. Today, cancer is a growing disease everywhere, but it is so intriguing because of the amount of people that still survive based on the medication and the knowledge we have.
To begin with, cancer, itself, is a unique and engrossing matter. Every day of every second, cells in our bodies are developing and decaying, but sometimes one cell goes out of control and makes more of what is needed because it does not have density-dependent inhibition. As far as I understand, cancer is the only disease that humans cannot be fully accused of causing. Indeed, we are in control of eating unhealthy foods, not exercising, drinking alcohol, doing drugs, and smoking, which may cause cancer, but this menacing illness may just flourish because of one irregular cell or genetic traits a person carries.

A person must go through several sessions with their doctor to, hopefully, cure this disease. I am very fascinated in how the studies and the technologies have grown to unravel the cancers that develop in a person. To make this more comprehensible, the number of deaths caused by cancer is greater than caused by AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Along with the idea that this disease does not have a definite cure is a mind-staggering concept to grasp. If not caught in time, cancer means guaranteed death. One out of every four deaths in the United States is due to cancer. In the year 2012 1.9 million deaths were caused by lung cancer, 745,000 deaths were caused by liver cancer, 723,000 deaths were caused by stomach cancer, 694,000 deaths were caused by colorectal cancer, 521,000 deaths were caused by breast cancer, and 400,000 deaths were caused by esophageal cancer. These cancers are also the main types of cancers.
Cancer directly affects the lives of approximately 13.7 million Americans. In 2014 alone it is estimated that there will be 1,665,540 patients diagnosed with cancer (Jones). This educated guess by Dr. Baselga can lead us to believe that our education about cancer grows with every new account and new procedure that we complete. In the next decade, our understanding of Oncology will be revolutionized in the hope that it will bring us closer to our intended goal of defeating this monstrous disease. Oncology is a flourishing field that is and will be in high demand in the 21st Century because when a problem has been confirmed to be present the human task force will go to various lengths in order to find a solution. Now that Oncology has found a way to presently deal with cancer such as chemotherapy, addressing long term effects of those solutions will be an area that will be focused on as Oncology takes steps forwards towards a cure.
