Attention getter: There are 2.6 million people in the United States that have atrial fibrillation. This number of people is about the size of the population of Chicago, Illinois.
Central idea: Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that can be unbearable but affects each patient differently.
Credibility statement: My dad had atrial fibrillation. He has been rushed to the hospital many times. His experience with it was so debilitating that when he tried the medication alone and that did not help, he later went on to have a surgical procedure and has since not had an episode.

what causes the condition, the symptoms associated with it, and the possible treatments. Body I. Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib, is an irregular heartbeat. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute website, updated on September 18, 2014, "Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia." An arrhythmia is a non-regular rhythm of the heart. The heart can beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly. It increases the risk of stroke and heart disease. B. The American Heart Association website, last updated September 3, 2014 claims that atrial fibrillation is "The most common "serious" heart abnormality in people over the age of 65 years. Even though untreated atrial fibrillation doubles the risk of heart-related deathers and causes a 4-5-fold increased risk for stroke, many patients are unaware that AF is a serious condition." Transition: Now that I have defined atrial fibrillation, I will describe the causes of the condition. II. There are various things that can cause atrial fibrillation and sometimes more than one of those causes can contribute. The upper chambers of the heart, also known as the atrium, undergo hectic electrical signals, causing the heart to quiver very fast. According to the Mayo Clinic website, last updated July 18, 2014, "The heart rate in atrial fibrillation may range from 100 to 175 beat a minute. The normal range for a heart rate is 60 to 100 beats a minute." Some of the causes of atrial fibrillation are high blood pressure, heart attacks, coronary heart disease, abnormal heart valves, and congenital heart defects. Sometimes the cause is unknown. Transition: Now that I have disccussed what atrial fibrillation is and what causes it, I will now discuss the typical symptoms. III. The symptoms that a person experiences can range from being minor and undetected to debilitating, which is what my dad experienced. WedMD.com, last updated on March 12, 2014, indicates that the symptoms include "heart palpitations, an irregular pulse, shortness of breath, weakness and fatigue, chest pain, dizziness, confusion, and lightheadedness or fainting, also called syncope." It is possible that these symptoms can transpire instantaneously. Once these symptoms occur, it is crucial to get treatment right away. Internal summary: So far I have discussed what atrial fibrillation is, what causes it, and the symptoms associated with it. I will now discuss the treatments available for this condition. IV. There is a variety of treatments available. There are two broad classes of medications: antiarrhythmic and beta blockers. Antiarrhythmic medication helps prevent the arrhythmia from starting. 2. Beta blockers help slow the heart rate down. B. Another type of treatment is surgical. Catheter ablation is the type of procedure that my dad had. For some people, their arrhythmia is caused by "hot spots." These are abnormal conduction calles that can trigger an arrhythmia. The doctor passes a wire into the heart and is able to identify the hot spot.
The other end of the wire is hooked up to a machine that causes the other tip of the wire to vibrate at millions of times a second (Mega Hertz). This high frequency vibration causes heat, which destroys the hot spot.

It is performed only during open-heart surgery.
It is conducted when patients don't respond to other treatment.
The two types of cardioversion treatment are electrical and chemical.
Electrical cardioversion uses the paddles for defibrillation that sends energy to the heart.
Chemical cardioversion uses drugs to stop the heart and then the heart restarts itself with its intrinsic (internal) beat. When these drugs are used, there must always be an electrical standby.
Conclustion: In conclusion, today I have discussed what atrial fibrillation is, what causes it, its common symptoms, and the possible treatments. It is important to have regular checkups to reduce the risk of this condition and establish treatment needs and understand the different treatment alternatives. Today I’d like to discuss traumatic brain injury also referred to as TBI. I chose this topic because traumatic brain injury is a serious and complex injury with a broad spectrum of symptoms and disabilities. Traumatic brain injury effects people of all ages and is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. A traumatic brain injury can be caused by a blow or jolt to the head that disrupts normal functions of the brain Also, traumatic brain injury can cause physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral affects.
The study of cardio physiology was broken up into five distinct parts all centering on the cardiovascular system. The first lab was utilization of the electrocardiogram (ECG). This studied the electrical activities of the heart by placing electrodes on different parts of the skin. This results in a graph on calibrated paper of these activities. These graphs are useful in the diagnosis of heart disease and heart abnormalities. Alongside natural heart abnormalities are those induced by chemical substances. The electrocardiogram is useful in showing how these chemicals adjust the electrical impulses that it induces.
What I wanted to talk about today is this life save device called a automated external defibrillator. It has become the number one way to resuscitate a person who has had a cardiac arrest unwitnessed by emergency medical services and who is still in persistent ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. Many people have played a big role in creating this device to become more efficient, smaller and easier to use for the general public. Here are just to name a few that played a part in the creation for this device: Claude Beck, James Rand, Paul Zoll, and Frank Pantridge. The first use of a defibrillator on a patient was in 1947 on a 14 year old boy. Claude Beck was performing a open-chest surgery when the boy went into fibrillation. Beck manually massaged his heart for 45 minutes until the arrival of the defibrillator. The defibrillator he used during surgery was made by James Rand and had silver paddles the size of large teaspoons. In 1956, Paul Zoll performed the first successful external defibrillation with a more powerful defibrillator. A major breakthrough in emergency medicine occur in 1965. At the time a majority of coronary deaths occurred outside of the hospital setting since defibrillator required a main power source and were only available in hospitals it made them pretty much useless in saving lives outside of a hospital setting. Frank Pantridge often referred to as the Father of Emergency Medicine, made the first portable defibrillator in 1965. This device was power by a car battery and weighted approximately 70 kg (155 lbs). By 1968 he was able to create a defibrillator that was safer to use and only weighted 3 kg (6-7 lbs). According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine men over the age of 45 and women over the age of 55 are considered at risk for heart disease. Heart disease is a major cause of death. It is beneficial to individuals who seek to prevent heart disease to recognize the risks leading to heart attacks as they are one of the primary indications of developing heart disease; especially those that fall into the at risk age groups. These risks consist of some that cannot be changed such as heredity risks, or those that can change such as smoking habits. It is very important to know these specific risks for prevention and to understand the symptoms of heart attacks, such as sweating or the feeling of weakness so if these or other symptoms occur people are aware. Finally heart disease treatment is of vital importance if you experience a heart attack so you can learn how to prevent another one from occurring.
Keep in mind that the migraine sufferer does not have to have any of these conditions to take them to prevent their migraines.
