Advertisements are a way of manipulating people's minds in order to sell a product, service or idea. They persuade you using many techniques that help draw you in and want you looking for more. Advertisements are everywhere and you might not even notice you are the target. Today I am going to break down the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 Advertisment and see how persuasive it really is. The TAG Heuer ad features a well known actor Chris Hemsworth who has starred in multiple movies. If most people see an image of him they associate it with some of his movie characters such as Thor. The Marvel movie Thor is a very popular action movie that involves Chris Hemsworth playing the role of a tough, powerful superhero. By using Chris Hemsworth in their advertisement they are selling the ‘brand’ of him and channeling the marvel superhero movie star through the ad to give it extra masculinity and power. The key to success in this ad is using this actor who is well regarded who plays roles that are well liked which means all our pre existing affections for him and his characters are associated with the product. The stance he has with his body side onto the camera but his head pointing at it directly is a very dominant, masculine and powerful pose. His cold stare into the viewer's eyes leaves the viewer with a clear impression of power that is both awesome and desirable. Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
It clearly depicts characteristics of Craig’s men’s men and men’s women. Firstly, the commercial was aired during sports related shows, which a lot of men tend to watch. The lead male in the commercial was muscular and handsome, radiating clear masculinity. He is also has unchallenged freedom since he is not portrayed as being tied down to any responsibility. In addition, Craig states that, “On the other hand, the absence of women must not suggest homosexuality. Men’s men are clearly heterosexual.” His point is that even if there are no women in the commercial, there has to be a clear indicator that the men are not homosexuals. It appeals to the emotions of people who feel domestic violence is wrong and persuades people to want to speak up and end spousal abuse. The picture comes from a credible organization that helps battered woman and children find safe homes away from their abusers. It reaches out to the logical side of us by stating that, “When he controls your life, it’s no longer your life.” With the lighting and the overall feel of the Ad, it shows how dark domestic violence is. Overall the entire ad is successful and clearly shows what the ad is trying to raise awareness
All in all, it seems that car companies can use posters to advertise their upcoming vehicle and get creative with it. It just goes to show this creativity of poster ads leads to countless ways of influencing and even repelling different consumer groups. Looking back, it also appears that behind these texts and images are tactful tools of advertising that can be manipulative and associative, and persuade to appeals of reason or emotion.
In conclusion the ad shows its appeal to logos, pathos, and ethos by having a woman on it and having her state her opinion. By having the character state her opinion it will make people who see this ad think about the issue at hand. In addition to that the ad uses a simple but effective way to capture the audience’s attention. It captures attention by using a well-known character, a short but effecting statement, and a simple color scheme to draw attention. Doing so helps grab the reader and then further deliver the message of pro-choice and that it’s a woman’s choice to do with her body as she pleases.

John Smith’s television advertisement is more effective because it uses the same character, Peter Kay, so the audiences are familiar with him and his humour. They associate him with the product. By putting him in different situations you can convey new persuasive devices but keep the familiarity of the ‘no-nonsense’ slogan, which is associated with John Smiths.

Advertisers influence consumers by alluding the consumer into buying this product over a generic product that could perform the same task, directing the advertisement towards a certain audience, and developing the ad where it is visually attractive.
Advertisements are pieces of art or literary work that are meant to make the viewer or reader associate to the activity or product represented on the advertisement. According to Kurtz and Dave (2010), in so doing, they aim at either increasing the demand of the product, to inform the consumer of the existence, or to differentiate that product from other existing one in the market.
