Tiger Woods
There have been a lot of great golfers on the PGA Tour, but none as dominant as Tiger Woods. Tiger ever since he was a little boy, worked his tail off to get better at the game. Tiger once said “I want to be what I've always wanted to be: dominant.” With his amount of wins on the PGA tour it was clear, he lived up to his quote. With his dedication to the game and hard work practicing, it is clear Tiger Woods is the best golfer to ever play the game.
Eldrick Tont Woods, famously known as Tiger Woods, was born in Cypress, California (Tiger Woods Biography). He is the only child of Earl and Kutilda Woods (Tiger Woods Biography). Tiger picked up the game of golf very early in his life. Woods was so good, that he appeared on a talk show, and beat famed comedian Bob Hope in a putting contest. He was three years old at the time, and was hailed as a prodigy, but Tiger didn’t stop there. Earl Woods, Tigers father, spent a lot of time developing his son’s talents. During practice sessions, Earl would make loud distractions, so Tiger would be able to maintain his composure. Tiger’s mother, made

sure that all of the golf practicing wouldn’t get in the way of Tigers childhood, and it didn’t. Tiger grew up as a regular boy, who enjoyed junk food and video games. He just had an exceptional gift in golf. When Woods was eight years old, he finally got the chance to show off his golf talents, when he won his first formal competition (Tiger Woods Biography). From that point on he was unstoppable, winning tournaments and breaking amateur records everywhere (Tiger Woods Biography). In 1994, Tiger Woods golf career would reach new heights, when he went to Stanford University on a full golf scholarship. In Woods first year at Stanford, he won the U.S.
Amateur title and qualified him to play in the Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia’s Augusta National Golf Club (Tiger Woods Biography). After Tiger won his third U.S. Amateur title, Woods left college and turned professional on August 29, 1996 (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Tiger played in eight events as a pro in 1996, he won two tournaments and was named PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year. It was obvious Woods was going to be good at this point. Tiger with his huge long game, followed up with his excellent chipping and putting and his confidence on the course, made him an intimidating opponent and popular player among the fans (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). All of these components put together propelled his game to a level, no one could
match. In 1997 at the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, Woods shot a tournament record two-hundred and seventy over seventy-two holes and finished twelve strokes ahead of the rest of the field in one of the most dominating performances in professional golf history (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). In 1999 Tiger won eight PGA tournaments, the first to do so in two decades. He also racked up six consecutive victories (1999-2000), which tied Ben Hogan’s 1948 streak. His streak was however the 2nd longest behind Byron Nelson’s eleven straight wins. Tiger once again set a record at the 2000 U.S. Open. He became the first person to finish the tournament at twelve under par, tying Jack Nicklaus for the lowest seventy-two hole score, Wood’s fifteen stroke victory was the largest winning margin at a major championship (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Later in the 2000 year, Tiger became the fifth golfer in history, and youngest, to complete the career Grand Slam of the four major championships by winning the British Open (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). He won the tournament at a record setting nineteen strokes under par. Tiger won a couple more Major tournaments, but then went on a major drought. Tiger finally in 2005, ended the drought winning the Masters and the British Open. Tiger followed up a great year, with a dominating year in 2006. Wood’s won nine tournaments, including the British Open and the PGA Championship (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). In 2007, Tiger claimed his thirteenth major championship. Sadly, Tiger underwent knee surgery in 2008, but was able to come back two months later, stronger than ever, to capture his third U.S. Open victory. Winning the tournament meant he had completed his third career Grand Slam, a feat matched only by Jack Nicklaus (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). After the U.S. Open win, Tiger withdrew from the remainder of the 2008 season to have a more extensive knee surgery. He returned to the PGA Tour in 2009. Tiger won a good amount of tournaments, but no major tournaments for the first time since 2004. Sadly, Tiger’s troubles were far from over. In November of 2009, Wood’s was involved in an early morning car accident outside of his house in Orlando, Florida (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). The crash led to a great deal of media attention, involving his personal life. Soon after it was revealed Wood’s, who married Elin Nordegren in 2004, had a number of affairs, and all of this became national news. After all of this, Tiger announced he would take some time off of golf, to spend time with his family. Tiger returned in 2010, to play in the Masters. He surprisingly placed in the top five in the Masters and in the U.S. Open. However the 2010 season would be a disappointment. Wood’s didn't win any tournaments and had the worst four round score of his professional career (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). Tiger’s difficulties on the golf course continued in 2011 as he again, failed to win an official PGA tournament. Tiger picked back up his game in 2012, though. In March of 2012, Tiger ended his winless drought by winning the Arnold Palmer invitational. It was his first victory in thirty months. Tiger wasn't done with 2012 though. He pulled out another win at the AT&T National tournament for his seventy-fourth PGA victory, passing Nicklaus for the second highest win total in tour history. Finally Tiger began to gain his confidence. Tiger used his confidence to win a total of five tournaments in 2013. He didn’t win any majors in 2013, but showed that he hadn't given up on himself, and he claimed the number one ranking in the world again. Sadly, his 2014 season was full of injuries. He missed long stretches of the season, due to persistent back pains. At the end of the year he would play in a total of nine PGA Tour events. Tiger is coming back to shape slowly, though. His 2015 season was a winless one again, but he played his best since 2013, and seems to be coming back to his old self once again. Why is Tiger Woods the greatest golfer ever? With his 79 PGA tour victories, PGA Tour Player of the Year eleven times, and being the most influential golfer of all time. Who else would be the greatest of all time? Tiger once said “Golf is Me.” Which is true, golf is and forever will be Tiger. Golf will never again have a player who dominated like Tiger did. It is easy to say that Tiger Woods is without a doubt, the greatest golfer ever.
On April 21st, 2010, an American golfer whose achievements made him a legend found himself behind a podium, defending his actions in front of a crowd of family, friends, and a public whom he had shocked. In 2009, Tiger Woods experienced the biggest blow to his career in the form of a car crash and infidelity scandal. Not only was he married with two kids, but he was easily identifiable as a positive role model for children across the world. His actions challenged the core of American morals and raised feelings of contempt among the public. These next 14 minutes of speaking in defense would be Tiger’s only chance to set things straight, his only chance to rebuild his life. Over the course of his speech, Tiger utilized the four rhetorical techniques for self-defense as cited by Ware and Linkugel in the article, “They Spoke In Defense Of Themselves: On The Generic Criticism Of Apologia”. By expressing denial, bolstering, differentiation, and transcendence, Tiger made a plea for forgiveness in his Apologia speech.
But that is not to say that Callaway clubs are spurned by professionals. By the end of the 2000 professional tour, Callaway Golf ranked as the most-played manufacturer of drivers, fairway woods and irons on the world's five major professional tours combined.
Charles Macdonald was an early founder of American golf. He recalled playing golf in the Chicago area as early as 1875. Another promoter of golf, a young man named Andrew Bell from Burlington, Iowa, was initially exposed to golf when he went to Scotland to attend the University of Edinburgh. Upon his return to the United States in 1883, he laid out four informal golf holes on the family farm and played a few rounds with his friends. In 1884 Colonel Hamilton Gillispie, a former Scotsman who went into the lumber business in Florida, was known to hit golf balls in a field that is now the main street of Sarasota (History of Golf 7). Also in 1884, the Oakhurst Golf Club was formed in North Carolina now famous for it’s first hole from the Club’s Homestead course, celebrated to...
Although golfers end the day on the 18th green, their day begins on a tee box. A drive, the first hit off a tee toward the objective hole, may seem very routine and insignificant, but, in fact, it is the most important shot taken on each hole. If golfers hit a long drive into the nicely cut fairway, they have only to hit the ball off the nicely cut grass on usually a clear path to the hole. But if they hit a drive into the woods, then they have to make sure the ball does not hit any trees, branches, or other obstacles when exiting the woods. That’s why hitting a good drive is a must. With practice, even you can hit a fundamental drive.
Golf is a sport of fun shots, and frustration shots. One of the best players ever to play the sport was Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus had many accomplishments in golf and even though I will not mention all of his accomplishments I will mention some of the most important. Jack won six Masters Tournaments, the Masters is the biggest golf tournament of the whole year, and he won his sixth Masters at the age of forty-six! He won seventy-three PGA tour wins and eighteen majors, meaning that he won either the U.S. open, the Open Championship, the Masters Tournament, or the PGA Championship eighteen times! Jack even won PGA tour player of the year five times! Jack’s accomplishments are very good but we have to start at the beginning.
Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. was the greatest golfer of his time. He was only 28 when he retired from competitive golf, but had won an amazing 13 major golf championships in both the United States and Great Britain during his brief career. After retiring he redefined the art of course architecture. He would utilize the natural advantages of the property and use mounds rather than adding too many bunkers and put into play the natural creeks as water hazards. Jones wanted this concept of golf course architecture to make a contribution to the game as well as give expression to his ideas about golf design.
Ever since I was a little kid, golf has been there. Golf has been something in my life that I can always fall back on and use to get some anger out of just to clear my head. No matter what it was, golf has been my rock. There is nothing like waking up at the crack of dawn to get out under the sun to play a game you love.
...e first." He valued his reputation and gave his all to be the best in his sport and in life. In this right, Arthur Ashe, using his ability combined with his voice, arguably made the biggest impact on sports and society.
First off, we went to http://www.pgatour.com and http://www.tigerwoods.com to collect our data. We found the average scores of the top 100 PGA tour players. We found that Tiger Woods was actually ranked in second place, one spot behind the scoring average leader, David Duval. However, there are currently somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 players playing the PGA Tour. It’s not too bad to beat 398 of them! As a second to this incredible piece of information, came Woods’ biography and career statistics. Astounding considering his short professional career. All of these observations combined with our own calculations have changed our earlier mentioned view. After hours of research and study we have found Woods to be a great player. This change of heart led to our hypothesis: Even without the media hype Tiger Woods has proved himself, statistically, to be a great player.
Imagine the sun bursting through the trees for the first time of the new day, the smell of freshly cut grass still potent to your nose as you tee the ball up for a round of golf in the cool mist of a spring morning. "That is what brings you back every time, the smell of the air, the coolness of the whether and the beautiful surroundings that make every shot enjoyable." (Suess, PI) This is the game of golf in its finest and most exquisite time to many people and many people it has touched in its long history. Golf is a lifestyle and not just games to people that are avid in playing. The game of golf has a history that is rich in technological advances and personal accomplishments, which through time has shown to shape the sport into what it has become today.
Because of the evolution, golf looks much different than when it started. Because the sport of golf has changed, many people have been able to better their game and lower their handicap. Along with this, many more people have been introduced to the game which may be helping the sport be
Thesis: Professional golfer Tiger Woods is a modern-day tragic hero because his flaw of excessive pride directly led to the destruction of both his personal relationships and his professional career. Tiger took complete responsibility for his actions, but it came too late and by then he ended up suffering consequences that were excessive compared to his errors.
There are many phenomenon’s as to why people find golf boring or lethargic. I am going to lay out for you, a few critical points on how to change your perspective on the trials of golf. You need to be brought up in the right environment, exposed to the way the game works, and the correct technique involved. In Tigers case his father showed him how to play from the age of two. In the case of a businessmen, his father might have told him about the stock market etc also from a young age, this way their education begins early.
