This informative writing essay is about the Rottweiler’s history, and factors about them. It is believed that the Rottweiler has developed from Roman Cattle Dogs around the years of 70 AD. In later years in the City Rottweil, Germany the Cattle Dog was mixed with a mutt (later known as the German Shepherd) Creating a new breed of dog known as the Rottweiler. The most common Rottweilers in present day are 50% German 50% American, but before 1940´s all Rottweilers had 100% German descent. Although after the 1942 breeders wanted an American version of the Rottweiler. Finally in 1943 after one year of research and experiments, a Rottweiler and an American Bulldog were bred and made into a 50% American version. Thus creating the half American half German Rottweiler. …show more content…
As of today Rottweilers tails are docked 6 weeks after birth, because back in Germany Rottweilers were used for pulling carts for butchers.
(Docked- the removal of portions of an animal's tail) The reason they docked their tail was because it would hit the cart or knock meat off the cart when the dog´s tail would wag. With the descent of the Cattle dogs, Rottweilers main occupation besides being a pet was herding cattle. Although in the 19th century cattle herding was forbidden by law, and so with the Rottweiler out of a job the population fell drastically.
The Rottweiler was officially recognized into the AKC in 1931. (AKC- American Kennel Club) Even though Rottweilers had been around for many decades, it was not official until 1931. In the years of 1901-1907 Rottweilers were used as police dogs in many countries, including the US. Rottweilers were replaced by German Shepherd for police dogs in 1907, because the German Shepherds are less stubborn and last longer in the force. The reason Rottweilers can not stay healthy as long as German Shepherds is, because Rottweilers commonly are diagnosed with Hip Displacement with then results in cancer in their
bodies. Rottweilers are classified by their three possible colors combinations, which all include black as one of their colors; Black and Rust, Black and Tan, and also, Black and Mahogany. Rottweilers do not have any genetic markings on them to be classified by. The Rottweilers are a medium sized dog with a large head. Mostly black in color with tan/rust/mahogany patches on the bottom half of their legs, on their eyebrows, and also on the bottom half of their head. The Rottweilers bite is very strong! It has the highest among all dog breeds, with an amazing average of 269 lbs of pressure, the record with 328 lbs of pressure. This powerful bite is in comparison with the size of their head. The bigger the head, the bigger the bite. Rottweilers are known for their aggressiveness and that is why many towns/cities have banned them. (For safety reasons) Towns/Cities in Iowa that ban Rottweilers; Alburnett, Altoona, Anamosa, Brooklyn, Centerville, Cherokee, Conrad, Denver, Elma, Sac City, and Waukon. Also many others have Rottweilers banned if the are declared “vicious” by law enforcement and/or animal control. The American Rottweiler Club (ARC) was formed in 1973 to encourage and promote the quality breeding of purebred Rottweilers. The ARC was implemental in the founding of two, independent not-for-profit organizations: the Rottweiler Health Foundation, (RHF) and the Rottweiler Rescue Foundation (RRF).

This produced a dog with a high prey drive with a medium-sized, stocky build and powerful jaws. Contrary to popular belief, the dogs were originally used in the sport of bull-baiting, where dogs would attack the cattle - not other dogs. Since the sport was executed in a pit, the dogs were dubbed ‘pit bull’ and that name has stuck since. When the sport was banned in 1835, the people who relied on these dogs for an income turned the dogs against each other. Their family friendly reputation changed, “around 1976, when animal-fighting venues were added to the Animal Welfare Act, according to Donald Cleary of the National Canine Research Council. Pits--often trained as combatants--came to be seen as dangerous. Throughout the next two decades, stories about vicious pits mauling innocent children appeared in news outlets across the country” (Tullis 3). Interestingly enough, pit bulls were not always the breed under fire by society. In the 1800’s, bite reports by bloodhounds, which were often used to hunt down escaped slaves, flooded the Northeastern newspapers. After World War ll, there was an increase of bite reports by German Shepherd Dogs, a breed used by the Nazis. Pit bulls are the most recent breed of dog to be misjudged. People began to fear pit bulls, this fear

When the word “domestication” is used when talking about dogs, most people have the misconception that humans brought dogs into their homes on purpose, and that is was something they did consciously. However, after reading about Hare’s research it is easy to understand that this
In recent years it has been the pit bull which has come under the scrutiny of legislative bodies, as their reputation becomes more and more sullied by street crime. To say “pit bull,” however, is a vague reference to several pit bull types, which are considered separate breeds by registries like the American Kennel Club (AKC). Each type has a slightly different breeding history; many began with the breeding of bulldogs with terriers to produce a loyal, compact and tenacious breed (“American Pit Bull Terrier”). The three standard pit bull types most often mentioned by name in breed-specific legislation include the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. That is not the extent of the legislation, however, which also includes dogs that “substantially conform to the breed standards established by the American Kennel Club” (Melvindale)....
The American Pit Bull is considered as a genuine breed because there are various breeds of pit bull that could have been mixed with other dogs. Pit bulls were raised for baiting larger animals during the hunting seasons. With the faithfulness of t...

Dog fighting made a comeback during the 1980s and the pit bull became the favorite macho dog for dog fighters. The dogs were trained to kill or be killed. Pit bulls were also the preferred guard dog for gangs, thugs and criminals. Since the supporters and detractors of pit bulls hold such disparate opinions regarding the ferocity of the breeds, it is only hoped that further discussion and education will help resolve the sad fate that awaits these unfortunate animals. Simply placing all the blame on the breeds will not solve the problems of dog fighting, overbreeding, aggressive training, and excessive euthanizations. Lastly, the biased, sensationalistic publicity of horrific dog attacks which has destroyed the reputation of the once beloved All American Dog must cease.
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. ...tion, including their initial evolution, their domestication, and the roles they played in human society throughout the ages. It is a relatively new book being published in 2010. Darcy Morey, the author of this book is a zooarchaeologist and focuses his research on the relationship between dogs and humans throughout time. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee. This book is based on the authors own research and also refers to the information gathered by many other scientists, all of which are listed in the reference section of the book. As mentioned this book contains the results of research from many scientists and is beneficial for learning both general and more scientific knowledge on the subject. I would recommend it to anybody who is conduction a research on the topic. This book was found using I-Share using the search term the domestication of dogs.
At this point they were most commonly referred to as “Bull Dogs”; originating from bull baiting, a sport they were suited to be good at. When this got outlawed in 1835 in England people found alternative ways to make money, this is where they came up with dog fighting “At this point, it seems likely that at least one and probably more strains of terrier were introduced into the breed to make it more "game".” (PitBulls, n.d.). A pit back then and now have been characterized by always having more aggression than any other animal. They made the better dog in their eyes to be able to have dog fights. That Pit bulls were only looked as a means of profit, not as a living thing. In Irish they described the Pits as “Old Family Dog” (PitBulls, n.d.). That they were the perfect dog for a family. They putting aside the aggression and prey drive they were extremely friendly towards
We designed those dogs. Those various “dangerous” breeds are a result of selective breeding for various physical and behavioral traits. Every dog was designed for a purpose. Pit bull’s purpose is to combine the gameness and agility of the terrier with the strength of the bulldog. German Shepherds were bred to be working animals and herding dogs.
Some people may say a dog is just a dog, but for me they are extremely desirable. Dogs are a person’s best friend. They make me cry, laugh, and I wish never adopted one because they do smell. Although, dogs smell, it should not be a justification to not obtain one. I mean what does not smell? I never realized how taking care of a dog could change my life; until I saw how they sleep throughout the day, they are always there to comfort me, and how they provide a responsible way of living.
When I was nine years old my grandparents adopted a two year puppy named, maximilian. We, of course, called him Max. When we went to the kennel to pick out a new dog Max didn 't seem like an option. He was a scrawny little puppy tucked in the corner of the shelter. Max was a boisterous springer spaniel mix, and when we first got him he was black and white. Overtime his white fur was masked by black spots, similar to age spots, which made him uniquely mine. Max was suppose to my grandfathers new hunting dog when he was newly adopted. However, at the very first gunshot Max bolted and my grandfather spent a three hours looking for Max in the woods. After the hunting incident my grandfather wrote Max off and, he became my dog.
