The audience for this informative essay is the professor of my English
Composition course, Pamela Hughes, and the entirety of my class. The purpose of this essay is to present an opinion of religion. The idea that religion is harmful to take to any extent of extremity. Though controversial, I believe that this topic should be addressed. It may be heinous and unfavorable to express an opinion that contains such heresy, but even if every word is disagreed with, it is always helpful to view something from another perspective.
Religion kills. It seems like such a disgusting sentence. It seems to turn up the noses of any creed. Uttering the phrase itself can lead to some intense, spiteful fears. Why is this? Perhaps it

Saying it is a religious matter does not justify a thing. Another sense of child abuse that is slightly less sadistic, is depravity. Furthermore, a parent does not have the right to neglect their child, except in a couple of instances due to religious beliefs. Fundamentalists and lobbyists have supported parents right to deny a child medical services due to religious faith. To those who do not believe this is depravity, here’s an example. Herbert and Catherine Schaible refused their child, Kent, medical care when he got sick. Instead, they decided to follow what they believed, that if they prayed enough, their god would cure their sick child. Kent’s condition did not shake off so easily, it began to get worse and he was not showing signs of recovery. Their plethora of prayers was futile because Kent died of pneumonia ate the young age of two. Doctors had said that this was purely bacterial and would have been curable with antibiotics. To reiterate one vital piece of information form that story, Kent was two years old. He did not ask for them to neglect him. Kent did not deny medical support, his parents did, and he lost his life for it. Unfortunately, Kent’s eight-month-old brother also passed away due to the exact same illness. Prayer did not help these children. The parents faced several charges and were luckily jailed so another instance wouldn’t …show more content…
The obvious one being political power. The Vatican has had power since its beginning. Looking back, it seems like a president couldn’t win a presidential election unless he was an outgoing Christian. To add to this claim, when John F. Kenney was elected, one setback for him was his Roman Catholic background. Though this controversy, Kennedy undoubtedly contributed a great deal before his assassination. It’s hard to say that the Cuban Missile Crisis would have been subdued if Kennedy was not in the office. Consequently, America should be more concerned about moral character, leadership, and policies to elect a president. Religion should not be in politics. On the other hand, religion has power individualistically as well. It begins to substitute the actual use of morals by diverting them from true intrinsic motivation into fear. A fear of going to hell, a fear of not pleasing god. It promotes learned helplessness by persuading followers to think that no good can come upon them unless by the grace of god. This dependency of divine power urges people to assume that no good can come to them without god. Furthermore, people also think that the good they do isn’t as important because they believe that it is caused by their
Religion is considered as a pervasive force in this world. It shapes people as to how they behave and interact with almost everything present in the society. Influencing behavior, character formations, ideals, policies, standards are just among the dimensions and societal perspectives affected and impacted by religion. Because of these applications and implications in human lives and existence, religion should be understood deeply, particularly, on how it affects the world. Looking at the American perspective of the term "religion," it could be simply
In today’s society, there are roughly around 4,200 religions that exist on this planet. Some define "religion" as a cultural system of behaviors and practices that help people make important decisions in life. Out of the many religions, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism have many similarities that connect them to one another. Themes of morality, justice, love are found through both the Buddha's teaching and the Hebrew and Christian Bible.
Religion and philosophy greatly affect life in many different cultures. Some of these cultures include those of the Ancient Indians and Ancient Chinese.
There are many social institutions that have major impacts on society. One of the trickiest social institutions would have to be, religion. Religion seems to have a huge impact on a society even if it’s directly or indirectly. Why is that? Do we need it? Does it let us live a more fulfilled life? What effects does it have on society? Is it necessary for a functioning society? According to Dalton Conley (2013:611) sociology defines religion as being a unified system of beliefs traditions, and practices around sacred things; a set of shared “stories” that guide belief and action. Religion is a way for people to make sense of the world, it keeps society in line with expected behaviors. Without religion people would subside to create their own rules and would deem to follow a path that could harm a society and come to an end. Religion is necessary for a society to function, prosper, and for someone to learn how to be a well moral contributor to society.
Though there are many religions that are still practiced in the world, it is important to see what role they play in culture and thinking. When religion is taken in healthy amounts with a strong mind, religion can be a blessing and a gift to people everywhere. It can provide hope to people who need it the most, while inspiring others to take action and make positive changes. However, overdosing on religion can cause equal amounts of pain and anger.
...ord”. If this is what religion is about now, it is no wonder why people are seeing the hate that is being spread by something that was created to bring people together, not rip worlds apart.
The role of religion in politics is a topic that has long been argued, and has contributed to the start of wars, schisms (both political and religious), and other forms of inter and intra-state conflict. This topic, as a result of its checkered past, has become quite controversial, with many different viewpoints. One argument, put forth by many people throughout history, is that religion and the government should remain separate to avoid any conflicting interests. This view also typically suggests that there is one, or several, large and organized religions like the Roman Catholic Church, which would be able to use their “divine” authority to sway the politics of a given state by promising or threatening some form of godly approval or disapproval. By leveraging their divine power, individual figures within a religion, as well as the religion as a whole, could gain secular power for themselves, or over others. A second view, which was developed by many theologians through history, suggests that that without religion there would be a general lack of morality in the people and leaders of a given state, which would give way to poor political decisions that would not be in the interest of the people and perhaps even God (or the gods). This argument, however, does not address the fact that morality can exist without religion. In sociology, it is commonly accepted that social norms, which include morality, can result from any number of things. Religion, laws, or the basic desire of survival can all create these norms, so it suffices to say that as a society, our morals reflect our desire to live in relative peace through the creation of laws that serve to help us to survive. The argument of whether or not religion and politics should mix...
Sociology in its basic most broad definition is the study of society and social behavior. Which includes all variables that govern and affect how masses act and react under different circumstances. This includes values, traditions, morals, ethnic identity and most importantly; religion. Religion has been, for as long as humans existed on this earth, the foremost perception that controls society and govern its behavior. Some would even argue that religion is the source of human morals, traditions and values.
If the presence of anti-Catholic violence in American history is unknown to many, it is for good reason. We as Catholics do not usually like to talk about being a minority; we do not like to talk about being persecuted. For generations, our immigrant ancestors and their descendants fought to be considered “100% American” – not “hyphenated” Americans – Irish-American, German-American, Polish-American, or Italian-American. We as Catholics have spent decades trying to assimilate to White Anglo Saxon Protestant (“WASP”) America and have consequently downplayed our distinctiveness. We wanted to fit in – to get good jobs, get a college education, move to the suburbs – and to achieve the American dream.
Scholars have been trying to come up with a well-founded, acceptable and universal definition of religion for years; however, none of these definitions so far are a perfect fit for all religions of the world. There are many things in our life that are well defined and well understood but, unfortunately, religion is not one of them. There is no common ground and understanding of what religion really means. Religion is what we make of it, so no one can truly define religion in a way that is meaningful across all borders as it is outside of the realm of reason and rationale and the definitions we give could be either too exclusive or inclusive.
With modern technology and the rapid advancement of science, it is easy to look back into history and point out the problems religion had created in the past (Violence, intolerance, ignorance etc.) However one must keep in mind that reli...
The religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are alike in many ways but they also share many differences. Judaism and Christianity use the bible in their holy scriptures, while Islam does not. Jesus Christ is a part of all three religions as Christianity and Islam developed from Judaism. Many believe that the three religions worship, pray to, and focus on the same god. They believe this as many of the prophets are they share much in common as they share many beliefs. However, the followers of the three religions pray differently and in different places. the religions believe that their god created the world and everything in the world. The three Abrahamic religions have different histories, yet they share many similarities and difference.
Every Sunday. Stares and disappointment. I sat with my grandmother at this big church. People would stare when they realized I didn't know the prayers or songs. I was trying to learn more about religion why did I feel so scared? Am I going to find where I belong? Will I have enough time? These are questions I sometimes have to ask myself. When I was little I explored many religions but now that i'm older I am frightened about faith.
INDTRODUCTION “Sex and Religion”? Those two don’t really go hand in hand,” commented a freshman student from UF. Like this student, numerous people around the world believe this misconception to be true. Whether people argue for or against the importance of gender in religion, more than just what goes on in the bedroom has been heating up lately. Many debates have sparked due to the negative connotation associated with sex when confronted about its position in religious cultures.
My definition of religion has mostly stayed the same, but my perception of it has changed. At the beginning of the class, I assumed religion was something you believed based on your moral principles. I now believe that those moral principles are based on the religion that you believe in. Your religion changes your perception of the world and how to go about in it. Your religion tells you what is right and wrong in the world and answers all of the big questions one asks. Religion according to our book is, “A pattern of beliefs and practices that expresses and enacts what a community regards as sacred and/or ultimate about life” (Van Voorst 6). That definition was one thing that really got me thinking about my own personal idea of what religion
