History of Lacrosse
11 December 2015
Everyone wants to know the history of football, baseball, and basketball but no one really asks, “What’s the history of lacrosse?” Lacrosse is a dangerous sport, special how the Indians played it and how the sticks were back then. Nowadays there is a difference between women and girls and men and boys lacrosse games. Lacrosse has been played for many years and we play it as a spot but the Indians have used it for many other reasons other than fun.
Indians played the most aggressive and played religiously for their gods and to honor one another. Lacrosse was a big part in the Native Americans religious lives, sometimes played to please their gods and to honor themselves as well

as their tribe Lacrosse was a big part in Native American’s religious lives, sometimes they played to please their gods and to honor themselves as well as their tribes.
The Indians had believed in many gods and spirits. If they would have a bad harvest time they would play for the gods to please them and to hopefully have a better one. The Native Americans used to play lacrosse for other reasons other than for honor and to please their gods. Native American tribes would play lacrosse to settle arguments and to train their warriors for battle. Playing lacrosse would help with training warriors because they would have learn formation and how to work together. Who ever would win the game of lacrosse would win the argument. The Native Americans would injure many others in the game of lacrosse. Native Americans would severely injure or kill other Native Americans by hitting them in the head with their heavy lacrosse sticks. Because lacrosse was so violent, games would often end with fatalities. The Native Americans would play lacrosse on large fields. The fields would be larger than football fields. mile. There would be no boundaries and would have players from 100 to 1000 warriors on the field. The Native Americans would have to be in the greatest shape to be able to run over a mile back and forth. The games would last for days since the fields were so large and there are so many warriors. The lacrosse stick has evolved as well as the sport itself. There have been many different forms of the stick and it has been made out of wood and now plastic ("Lacrosse." North America's Sport. N.p., n.d. Web. 7 Dec. 2015. .). The lacrosse stick had had one to two shooting strings. The newer lacrosse sticks have up to four shooting stings. The newer lacrosse sticks are made out of aluminum or plastic. The Native Americans lacrosse stick was made out of wood. The lacrosse sticks could be easily made with in a day and if one broke they could just make a new one. They would make the pockets out of the weirdest things. Pocket was made out of a cat gut or leather. The Native Americans use cat guts for pockets because they were the perfect fit and size for one. Leather could be cut and sized for a pocket. Lather was also used for many of other things they used. The lacrosse sticks were very heavy. They would go on the field ready to play and during the game or near the end of the game Native Americans would go of the field severely injured or dead. What didn't help with the injuries or deaths. The Indians did not have any pads to protect them from fierce blows. With no pads whats so ever they would become very vulnerable to blows to the head, shoulders, and any other body parts. These results would end up in serious injuries or death ( ("Lacrosse." North America's Sport. N.p., n.d. Web. 7 Dec. 2015. .). Men and women's lacrosse is completely different now than it was before. Men and women’s lacrosse is a lot different from the past lacrosse let alone now from each other. Boys and men's teams have 10 players on the field and girls and women have 12 players on the field. Boys and men have 10, women have 12 but it's just 2 extra players in different positions. Women and girls lacrosse team have two more extra players but they still play the same part. Rules are different from men and boys lacrosse to women and girls lacrosse. Men and boys can body-check and stick-check on another and have to wear pads that cover up most of their body. They also have to wear helmets. It is illegal for women and girls to body check but it is legal to stick-check each other. Women and girls lacrosse games are less physically dangerous, so they only wear eye protection and a mouth guard. Women and girls lacrosse games are still dangerous because they can hit each other with their lacrosse sticks but men and boys lacrosse games are more dangerous. Men and boys can hit each other like in football so they need as much body protect they can also stick-check each other to which doesn't help. Men and boys lacrosse sticks are longer and have a pocket built in the net. Men and boys lacrosse sticks are longer so that they can have an extra light and they also have a pocket so it's easier to carry and run with the ball. In lacrosse you have a high risk of commotio cordis. Lacrosse players have a high risk of commotio cordis. In lacrosse you can get hit in the chest by the ball that can go 100 mph if it is a good throw. It can cause commotio cordis which will disrupt your heart rate( Hinkson, James, and Joe Lombardi. We can get a concussion playing while the Indians would severely injure or kill each other. The history of lacrosse is very different from how we play it today. There are more rules and padding. Players can get concussions playing lacrosse but they can get something worse and that’s commotio cordis. Players lacrosse sticks have evolved a lot to with the game

In Shadow of a Nation, by Gary Smith, it states that intertribal warfare was banned. This meant that the Native Americans no longer had a way to win glory or status anymore by rule of their culture. As stated in the article, “something had to take war’s place, some way had to be found to count coups.” The article goes on to mention how pre-battle rituals were used before big basketball games. It also compares how “the same drum cadence and honor songs used 200 years ago to celebrate the seizing of a dozen horses of the killing of three Sioux now reverberated through gymnasiums and community halls at the capture of a basketball trophy.” This explains why Alexie uses basketball as a way to gain glory, or lose it in his short stories.
Lacrosse has progressed over the years from when it started as a religious practice by the Native Americans to the Canadians to the east coast to all around the world. The equipment, shoes, rules, and fields have changed in many different ways. The different ways that people can set up their defense and their offense is so broad that it is hard to describe. The original team set up was when the Indians played over expanses of 500 yard up to a mile. Then William George Beers created a club called the Montreal Lacrosse Club in eighteen fifty-six. Then about a decade later William George Beers produced a whole set of rules that included reducing the number of players to ten adding hitting penalties while also introducing a rubber ball and a new innovative plastic design for the lacrosse stick.
Contact is the main difference between men’s and women’s lacrosse. In the men’s game, body-checking is legal and is influenced by their coaches. While, in the women’s lacrosse , it is not. Because of the fewer amount of body contact compared to men’s here is far less protective equipment. This is why in it is a strict rule for girls to not have any body contact. As stated in the article, “You shouldn’t need a helmet playing women’s lacrosse because it should be skilled and controlled enough,” said Allen. “Women’s lacrosse is less contact” (...) This is proves why helmets are not needed for women's lacrosse. Contact of the head is simply off limits that an accidental force with the stick or body , within 7 inches of the head. This area is interfeared, usually known as the halo then you will be fouled. In concilion having no contact with the body or head is a large factor why girls shouldn't have more head gear/
Lacrosse is a sport that was created by the Native Americans around the 1600s (5). The sport once known as stick ball to the Indians has evolved to a major sport across the world. Lacrosse was a sport that was a real major part of European culture before it made its way to America. It has just recently been picked up in the major ranks of colleges and even a professional level. So with the rise of this sport comes the rise of the preparatory phases to get ready for competition.
The MLL stands for Major League Lacrosse. It’s what follows after college, same as the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. The difference between the MLL and those big professional sports is that MLL players average salary is between $10,000 and $30,000 (Forbes). The other salaries all are over one million dollars for the average (Forbes/Wikipeida). People of course will be more familiar with basketball, baseball, or football. Lacrosse though, should be praised as much as those sports. That’s because MLL players don’t practice as much as the other sports but still compete at a very high skill level, the players have a burning passion for the sport, and the players have to be able to create chemistry with their players in one practice.
Every time I play lacrosse I feel like I am a part of something greater than myself. Being a part of something greater than myself, being changed in my life forever has made me think and feel whenever I play lacrosse. When I was younger playing lacrosse was a learning experience. Playing with more skilled or less skilled girls in lacrosse and playing different positions except for one every game, practice and scrimmage all the time makes me get a different perspective. Playing lacrosse for quick sticks has changed my life forever.
Both Lacrosse and Ice hockey are two sports that share similar aspects. One example would be that they both require plenty of athletic prowess, as well as countless hours of training and practice to master. The high amount of contact in both sports enables a player to become both physically and mentally “tough”. Lacrosse has grown to its highest level of popularity it has ever reached over the last ten years. Ice hockey has seen a steady climb in its popularity over the past 25 years making it one of the most popular sports in not only Long Island, but all across the U.S. However, there are many differences as well, and we should not overlook the fact that there are plenty of distinctions between the two great sports. Many of which are the main reasons that these are obviously two separate sports.
Lacrosse is a fast-growing American high school sport and becoming very successful within the past few decades, so it’s important to analyze how lacrosse has gotten to where it is today and what impacted the spread. The research question is: How has lacrosse changed over the years, and what impacted the spread? Research shows that lacrosse is becoming more popular every year, and many more people are becoming aware of this sport so the history behind what is known as ‘America’s first sport’ should be known. According to the National Federation of State High School, between 2009 and 2013, participation between high school boys and girls has increased for a total of 34%. Today, over 1400 high schools in the US include
Participation in sports and games has long been a part of Native culture. The most significant example of a sport invented and played by Natives is lacrosse. Lacrosse is still designated as the official sport of Canada despite the overwhelming popularity of hockey (http://canada.gc.ca). Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by Native Americans and Canadians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from other stick and ball games, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and vault it into or past a goal to score a point.
The lacrosse players would go up to each other and smack at each other’s sticks trying to dislodge the ball. The French named the game lacrosse which means the game of the stick. Sometimes a player would hit an opposing team’s player, severely injuring the person or breaking bones. There is even one account of a player dying. Anthony Aveni an editor for History.org says, “It is quite common to see someone crippled for the rest of his life who would not have had this misfortune but for his own obstinacy” (paragraph 9). The Indians did not have a goal so they used landmarks such as rocks and trees for a goal. Jane Claydon, an editor for Federation of International Lacrosse claims, “Some estimates have mentioned between one hundred and one hundred thousand players…. On the field at one time” (paragraph 2). There are tons of players. The fields were very extreme ranging anywhere from nine hundred yards to nine miles in length. Players at one end could not see the ball at the other end. The game would last from sun up to sun down many
It all started freshman year of high school. I really wanted to get involved in some kind of sport or club. I couldn’t decide what to do. Many people said I should join the lacrosse team and my response was “I have never played before, how am I suppose to make the team”. I always had an interest in lacrosse however I was scared to go out and buy all the expensive equipment and not make the team.. I went home that night and asked my parents what I should do. My dad encouraged me to go out and try. He said it doesn’t hurt to try. That next morning of school, I raced to the athletic office and signed up for lacrosse, and when that bell rang after school I went to the lacrosse store nearest to me and bought all of the gear so that I could make the first tryout. The fist tryout was the day after I bought all of the gear.
Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America, having been played by Native American tribes long before any European had even set foot on the continent. A century after European missionaries discovered the game played by Native Americans, they began to play it themselves, starting in the 18th century. From there, it evolved and grew in popularity from a very savage game that resembled war, into what it is today, a recreational sport played widely in America and other countries. As U.S. Lacrosse literature aptly puts it, “Lacrosse is a game born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, adopted and raised by the Canadians, and later dominated by the Americans.” When the first people of America started playing lacrosse centuries ago, the game served many purposes.
The origin of soccer in America has long been disputed. Some say that it was brought to America by immigrants. People claim that it was brought by the settlers of Jamestown, New Orleans, and Ellis Island. However, there is another reasonable source that people have discovered. It is have been revealed that the American Indians used to play a game similar to modern soccer called Pasuckuakohowog. It literally translates to “they gather to play ball with the foot”. In Pasuckuakohowog, there were goals that were a half-mile wide and a mile apart from each other. Games involved up to 500 people and were very dangerous. Records show that the game was played in the 17th century. This could prove that Pasuckuakohowog is what started it all for soccer in America.
Since soccer and lacrosse are very similar they are obviously very different in many ways. One example of a difference between soccer and lacrosse is that soccer uses more of their feet to kick the ball a lot more and to shoot the ball a lot. Lacrosse has to use a stick to pick up the ball and bring it down field to score and they can kick the ball but it's only to help you pick up they ball and you can't use it to score a goal. In addition to scoring a goal, soccer has a big goal to shoot and score since the ball is pretty big and you have to use your feet to score over lacrosse that has a small one to be able to score as the ball is very small and it would be easy to score if you had a soccer goal for lacrosse. Another example is that in soccer any player is
Sports played an important role in Irish culture and it was essential to organize them as best as possible for the people of Ireland. The Gaelic Athletic Association was organized by Michael Cusack in 1885 to restore traditional Irish games that had been overrun by British sports (Hutchinson 158). Games such as hurling and Gaelic football were revived to give the Irish sports to associate...
