Everyone wants to know the history of football, baseball, and basketball, but no one really asks, “What’s the history of lacrosse?”The Indians had invented lacrosse and when they played it, it was very dangerous. Today lacrosse is a popular sport that men and women of all ages like to play. When the Indians played lacrosse, they played for many reasons or events. Lacrosse was a big part in Native American’s religious lives, sometimes they played to please their gods and to honor themselves as well as their tribes. The Indians had believed in many gods and spirits. If they would have a bad harvest time they would play for the gods to please them and to hopefully have a better one.Native American tribes would play lacrosse to settle arguments …show more content…
and to train their warriors for battle. The Native Americans would play other tribes. Who ever would win the game of lacrosse would win the argument. Playing lacrosse would help with training warriors to fight, learn formation, and how to work together. Native Americans would severely injure or kill other Native Americans by hitting them in the head with their heavy lacrosse sticks. Because lacrosse was so violent, games would often end with fatalities. The Native Americans would play lacrosse on large fields. The fields would be larger than football fields. The Native Americans would play on fields that were 500 yards to one mile. There would be no boundaries and would have players from 100 to 1000 warriors on the field. The Native Americans would have to be in the greatest shape to be able to run over a mile back and forth. The games would last for days since the fields were so large and there are so many warriors. The lacrosse stick has evolved as well as the sport itself. There have been many different forms of the stick and it has been made out of wood and now plastic ("Lacrosse." North America's Sport. N.p., n.d. Web. 7 Dec. 2015. .). The lacrosse stick had one to two shooting strings. The newer lacrosse sticks have up to four shooting stings. The newer lacrosse sticks are made out of aluminum or plastic. The Native Americans, lacrosse stick was made out of wood. The lacrosse sticks could be easily made with in a day and if one broke, they could just make a new one. They would make the pockets out of the weirdest things like a cat gut or leather. The Native Americans use cat guts for pockets because they were the perfect fit and size for one. Leather could be cut and sized for a pocket. Leather was also used for many of other things they used. The lacrosse sticks were very heavy. They would go on the field ready to play and during the game or near the end of the game Native Americans would leave the field severely injured or dead. What didn't help with the injuries or deaths was that the Indians did not have any pads to protect them from fierce blows. With no pads whats so ever they would become very vulnerable to blows to the head, shoulders, and any other body parts. These results would end up in serious injuries or death ("Lacrosse." North America's Sport. N.p., n.d. Web. 7 Dec. 2015. .). Men and women's lacrosse is completely different now than it was before.
Boys and men's teams have 10 players on the field and girls and women have 12 players on the field. Rules are different from men and boys lacrosse to women and girls lacrosse. Men and boys can body-check and stick-check on another and have to wear pads that cover up most of their body. They also have to wear helmets. It is illegal for women and girls to body check but it is legal to stick-check each other. Women and girls lacrosse games are less physically dangerous, so they only wear eye protection and a mouth guards. Women and girls lacrosse games are still dangerous because they can hit each other with their lacrosse sticks but men and boys lacrosse games are more dangerous. Men and boys can hit each other like in football so they need as much body protect to help keep them safe, but they can also stick-check each other to which doesn't help. Men and boys lacrosse sticks are longer and have a pocket built in the net. Men and boys lacrosse sticks are longer so that they can have an extra length and they also have a pocket so it's easier to carry and run with the ball. Lacrosse players have a high risk of commotio cordis. In lacrosse you can get hit in the chest by the ball that can go 100 mph if it is a good throw. It can cause commotio cordis which will disrupt your heart rate ( Hinkson, James, and Joe Lombardi. "Men and Women Lacrosse." How Women’s Field Lacrosse Differs fromMen’s Field Lacrosse.
N.p., n.d. Web. 9 Dec. 2015. / Dougles, Robert J. "Commotio Cordis." Sudden cardiac death following blunt chest trauma: commotio cordis. N.p., n.d. Web. 9 Dec. 2015.). Indians have played lacrosse for many years and played way more aggressive than we do. We can get a concussion playing while the Indians would severely injure or kill each other. The history of lacrosse is very different from how we play it today. There are more rules and padding. Players can get concussions playing lacrosse but they can get something worse and that’s commotio cordis. Players lacrosse sticks have evolved a lot to with the game itself. Claydon, Jane. "Lacrosse History." Origin of Men’s Lacrosse. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Dec. 2015.
Lacrosse has progressed over the years from when it started as a religious practice by the Native Americans to the Canadians to the east coast to all around the world. The equipment, shoes, rules, and fields have changed in many different ways. The different ways that people can set up their defense and their offense is so broad that it is hard to describe. The original team set up was when the Indians played over expanses of 500 yard up to a mile. Then William George Beers created a club called the Montreal Lacrosse Club in eighteen fifty-six. Then about a decade later William George Beers produced a whole set of rules that included reducing the number of players to ten adding hitting penalties while also introducing a rubber ball and a new innovative plastic design for the lacrosse stick.
In Philip J. Deloria’s Athletic chapter from his book “Indians in unexpected places” he talks about his grandfather’s connection to sports. He goes into further detail about how his grandfather’s place in sports is similar to other Native Americans. Native Americans used sports as a way to find their place in a new society. Sports was also used to strengthen the community. “Many Indian communities responded by drawing webs of kingship and unity ever tighter, trying to keep sport stars humble” (113). Athletics was now being used to bring all of the community, especially in times when it seemed divided. Sports also disproved the “Vanishing Indian” idea because society saw Native Americans playing in these sports and saw that they still existed.
Contact is the main difference between men’s and women’s lacrosse. In the men’s game, body-checking is legal and is influenced by their coaches. While, in the women’s lacrosse , it is not. Because of the fewer amount of body contact compared to men’s here is far less protective equipment. This is why in it is a strict rule for girls to not have any body contact. As stated in the article, “You shouldn’t need a helmet playing women’s lacrosse because it should be skilled and controlled enough,” said Allen. “Women’s lacrosse is less contact” (...) This is proves why helmets are not needed for women's lacrosse. Contact of the head is simply off limits that an accidental force with the stick or body , within 7 inches of the head. This area is interfeared, usually known as the halo then you will be fouled. In concilion having no contact with the body or head is a large factor why girls shouldn't have more head gear/
Lacrosse is a sport that was created by the Native Americans around the 1600s (5). The sport once known as stick ball to the Indians has evolved to a major sport across the world. Lacrosse was a sport that was a real major part of European culture before it made its way to America. It has just recently been picked up in the major ranks of colleges and even a professional level. So with the rise of this sport comes the rise of the preparatory phases to get ready for competition.
The MLL stands for Major League Lacrosse. It’s what follows after college, same as the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. The difference between the MLL and those big professional sports is that MLL players average salary is between $10,000 and $30,000 (Forbes). The other salaries all are over one million dollars for the average (Forbes/Wikipeida). People of course will be more familiar with basketball, baseball, or football. Lacrosse though, should be praised as much as those sports. That’s because MLL players don’t practice as much as the other sports but still compete at a very high skill level, the players have a burning passion for the sport, and the players have to be able to create chemistry with their players in one practice.
Every time I play lacrosse I feel like I am a part of something greater than myself. Being a part of something greater than myself, being changed in my life forever has made me think and feel whenever I play lacrosse. When I was younger playing lacrosse was a learning experience. Playing with more skilled or less skilled girls in lacrosse and playing different positions except for one every game, practice and scrimmage all the time makes me get a different perspective. Playing lacrosse for quick sticks has changed my life forever.
The Europeans wanted to spread this sport, and was successful doing so. As soon as they played their first documented games, other teams also joined in and quickly became an official sport. The popularity of lacrosse rose in The Americas as soon as the Caughnawaga Indians demonstrated a game in Montreal, Canada. This was reported in a newspaper, and white men became interested. In 1876, quickly after the first set of playing rules were announced, New York University became the first team to be established in the US. During the spread of lacrosse, Queen Victoria gave recognition to the game when she endorsed a match being played in England. A popular figure being involved in this sport had a big impact on the future of lacrosse. 1904 was an important year in lacrosse history. For the first time, the sport became an actual event played in the Olympics which Canada had won the gold medal. As the next few years passed, the Unites would have won the next gold medals, but the glory moments of lacrosse quickly came to an end in 1908. It’s not completely clear as to why the sport was excluded, but research has shown that around this time, the global interests have changed and lacrosse seemed to be going out of style. As this was a disappointment to lacrosse history, it did not stop the sport from achieving much more. The still got to be a part of the world games and was involved in the World Cup. Men have always dominated in sports, while women weren’t necessarily recognized for their skills even though they do just as well. 1931, was their year. Women's lax was now recognized as a sport, rather than just a hobby. Many more teams were organized, and they participated in nearly the same activities as the men did. Equality of the sexes has always been an issue, Men has always been more dominant, so it is important to give credit to women for getting as much attention as they should. Today, it is still not exactly equal. The rules for men are way more
Participation in sports and games has long been a part of Native culture. The most significant example of a sport invented and played by Natives is lacrosse. Lacrosse is still designated as the official sport of Canada despite the overwhelming popularity of hockey (http://canada.gc.ca). Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by Native Americans and Canadians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from other stick and ball games, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and vault it into or past a goal to score a point.
Lacrosse is the oldest game in North America estimated between five hundred to one thousand years old. Many villages would play lacrosse together training for battle. Back then lacrosse balls were made mostly of clay. Sometimes they were made from wood and in rare
It all started freshman year of high school. I really wanted to get involved in some kind of sport or club. I couldn’t decide what to do. Many people said I should join the lacrosse team and my response was “I have never played before, how am I suppose to make the team”. I always had an interest in lacrosse however I was scared to go out and buy all the expensive equipment and not make the team.. I went home that night and asked my parents what I should do. My dad encouraged me to go out and try. He said it doesn’t hurt to try. That next morning of school, I raced to the athletic office and signed up for lacrosse, and when that bell rang after school I went to the lacrosse store nearest to me and bought all of the gear so that I could make the first tryout. The fist tryout was the day after I bought all of the gear.
For as long as I can remember, lacrosse has been a necessity in my family. I began playing goalie in fifth grade. Naturally, my ability increased and my skills improved. I received compliments on and off the field. A few houses down from me lives my neighbor, who happened to be head coach of boys lacrosse team for my age group. At some point in the winter of sixth grade, he asked if would be I willing to attempt playing as a goalie for his team. Graciously accepting his offer, my family and I were excited, as I would be the only girl playing in an all boys league. On the other hand, I was slightly nervous due to the higher level of aggression and more powerful shots I would have to block. Nevertheless, I was happy to begin and began training
Spring is a great time to get started in Lacrosse. It is a sport that is rapidly growing through the U.S., mainly in the east, but catching on everywhere. It is much different than anything you have seen with a combination of hockey, football, and soccer. You’ve got to try this one-of -a-kind sport, but first you must know the basics, checking, history and the continuous rules and penalties.
Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America, having been played by Native American tribes long before any European had even set foot on the continent. A century after European missionaries discovered the game played by Native Americans, they began to play it themselves, starting in the 18th century. From there, it evolved and grew in popularity from a very savage game that resembled war, into what it is today, a recreational sport played widely in America and other countries. As U.S. Lacrosse literature aptly puts it, “Lacrosse is a game born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, adopted and raised by the Canadians, and later dominated by the Americans.” When the first people of America started playing lacrosse centuries ago, the game served many purposes.
Native Americans are known for many different qualities they had as a part of their lifestyle. The games and sports they created to play that are now used in today’s society, lacrosse being the most famous. Some of the games played in the early times are either drastically changed or no longer played. There are many different Native American tribes that factor out cultural differences and depending on the tribe, the lifestyle qualities such as sports, games, and rituals differentiate between one another.
Soccer and lacrosse are obviously two different sports , but in a way they are both very similar to each other. Similarly, they both use a ball for their main part of the game. They use the ball to bring it down the field and a try to score on the opposing team. Another similarity is that they both have goalkeepers to help protect the ball from not going in on the team's side. They both stand in their goal box and they are able to bring it down field if they want. In addition, they use nets on the back of the goalkeepers with bars that show how big the goal is and so the ball doesn't fly out of the field when the team scores.Another example of a similarity between soccer and lacrosse is that they both involve a lot of running. For both sports midfield is the position where you have to run
