Late autumn has arrived and with it comes the dark magic of Halloween--and, of course, the

Quite a few things are swinging at the Fair this year, and that's not just a poor attempt at sounding "hip." You can, for instance, start by swinging to the tunes of the Artie Shaw Orchestra, the band that helped shape the musical standards of the Big Band era. They'll be performing a free concert in the Music Dome from August 12th to 16th at 7 pm. If you're looking for a more daring kind of swinging, head over to watch the Incredible Nocks, a husband and wife daredevil team performing free daily shows at the Old Fashioned One-Ring Circus. Finally, if swinging people aren't your style, you can check out some swinging of axes at the World Champion Lumberjacks Show, also performing free daily shows.
“Clickety clack, clickety clack”, his heart racing, his fingers trembling, as he falls to the ground with shock, and fear. The tale of the Headless Horseman has been told for many generations, from culture to culture, inducing fear in the eyes all around the world. However, it does make a great Halloween costume for children, despite it’s unfriendly figure. It’s appearance, and not to mention his missing head, has enabled the mystical story of, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” And, no matter how the story of the Headless Horseman has changed, the clickety clacking of his horse, and the pumpkin on his saddle will always strike fear in boys and girls, especially near Halloween.
I can’t hold in my excitement as I run to the foyer. Mom looks at me worriedly, but I ignore her and throw open the door before the person standing behind it can knock. He looks at me with boredom lacing his expression, obviously expecting my weird gift to tell the future. I quickly hug him and grab his pale hand, pulling him outside. Tonight is Halloween, and the only time my pale blonde friend visits me. He’s my first and only friend, so I don’t mind that he doesn’t play with me the other three hundred sixty-something days in the year.
Haunted houses may not be worldwide, but they are one of the biggest traditions of American Halloween. Even though they are famous, their history is very little known. It started in 1802, when a British sculptor known as Marie Tussaud sculpted wax figures of decapitated French figures. She showed her grotesque creations to the public, resulting in frightened British audiences. She also created death masks of the French Revolution’s many guillotine victims. Marie set up a London exhibition known as the “Chamber of Horrors.” When Tussaud’s collection gained more popularity, the public thirst for horror increased (3).
One year my family and I decided to go to the Niles Haunted House. This is one of the most well-known haunted houses in the southwest Michigan area. We would go through these scary buildings and the inside was pitch black. You couldn’t even see what was right in front of you. One of the memories from there was a little girl with a baby doll. The girl would not talk. She would stand next to you and follow you from a distance. It was so scary, but a fun
In this course, I’ve learned about the three sub-genres of horror. These three sub-genres are moral allegory, psychological horror, and the fantastic. The first sub-genre of horror, moral allegory, revolves around a rule being broken and the punishments for breaking the rule. There’s commonly a focus on the battle between good and evil, and there is often a supernatural evil involved. Commentary on our society is also common. The next sub-genre, psychological horror, capitalizes on deviant or abnormal human psychology. This abnormal creature creates the horror, whether through their actions or just by existing. The “monster” of the story is often a representation of an aspect of ourselves. This “monster” is not
The Nightmare Before Christmas starts at the Halloween Village run by Jack Skellington. The village, which is mostly colored with achromatic colors, such as black, white and gray is located in the middle of a mysterious and gloomy forest where tombs are spread around, and only dim moonlight sheds on it. People living in this village have eccentric appearances, such as skeletons, witches, and golems. Like the Gothic Literature, scary forests and supernatural objects are the settings, giving the audiences a sense of horror. Since the main audiences of The Nightmare Before Christmas are children, the director may limit brutal descriptions of the Halloween Village.
This story, although somewhat unique in its exact plot, contains many elements that make it a typical and traditional ghost story. These elements suggest common fears in today’s society of people in general, and children specifically.
Have you ever tried playing a game that is really chilling that you feel the goose bumps all over your skin? Imagine being stuck on a highway and nowhere to go to but to an old strange house full of evil. Haunted House Massacre is a flash game that has the audio and effects made really spooky and realistic at the same time. It all starts from a road trip of Fanny and her boyfriend. After having some car problems, Fanny's boyfriend decided to go to a house to see if they can contact someone and ask from help. However, as Fanny's boyfriend never came back, she went inside looking for him. As a player, you would be playing the role of Fanny, looking for your boyfriend inside the haunted house by passing through different doorways, hallways, and dead ends until you reach him... But be in for a surprise as there are lots of spooky effects and audio sounds that make the game play more exciting. If you fail to rescue Fanny's boyfriend, you can retry the game or start from where you ended.
Children and adults alike will enjoy the fun and thrills of the carnival. Take a stroll through the arts and craft exhibits, quilt show, or the photography show. Enjoy the variety of Main Street and Courthouse entertainment or stop by the band competition, car show, strawberry
It was a tradition for my entire immediate family to go to my camp for a full week to get off the grid and we'd visit the fair in that time span. My aunt, mother, and grandmother would spend most of the day in the Bingo tent repeating their selves saying "I wish they'd call my number!". My uncle, step-father, and my grandfather would take turns watching all of us children. I remember clearly my siblings and I won a few fish and when we arrived home to our petite camp we would fill up the tiny sink and keep them in there for quite a while. We would ride all the rides the guards would let us, we loved to sneak in. Our favorite was the alien spaceship that made you defy gravity and we were lucky we never vomited. The Ferris Wheel held a big place in my heart because we would ride before we left and look over the whole fair grounds at all the vendors and people having an amazing time with their own
