Three Kings Day, also known as Epiphany, is a Christian holiday that is celebrated annually on January 6th all around the world. The holiday is a celebration for the two significant hallmarks in Jesus’ life, when the three kings visited the newborn Christ in Bethlehem and Jesus’ baptism in the river of Jordan by John the Baptist (Britannica, 2007). The Western Church celebrates the visit by the Three Kings to the infant Jesus and the Eastern Church celebrates the baptism of Jesus (Britannica, 2007). The holiday commemorates the Bible story of the Three Kings, or Wise Men, who followed the divine star and travelled across a vast desert for twelve days to welcome the newborn Jesus to the world with special gifts. Like in Latino Cultures and France, Orthodox Greek Christians celebrate Epiphany with Vasilopita, a celebratory Greek Cake with a lucky dime inside. The dime represents good luck throughout the year and there is no other associated beliefs that come with it. The recipe calls for a lot of butter and eggs, anise-flavored masticha, and with an additional liquid made of whole mixed spices (Paget, 2004). However, the difference in celebrating Epiphany in Greece is that the bread is baked in advanced and is to be taken to church, instead of baking it at home, to be blessed and to be cut. Epiphany traditions in Greece are different. The people begin to observe Epiphany on January 5 by fasting; which means no meat, fish, dairy, or wine, and they are to only eat vegetables for the day (Paget, 2004). On the 6th of January, the day of the celebration, the people in Greece eat the Vasilopita as part of the ceremony and the cake is always made by women. The cake, also known as New Year’s Cake, is mostly associated with St. Basil’s Day in Greece which is January 1. In addition, some regions in Greece hold the tradition of the cake with a hidden coin to be associated with Epiphany and
Dia de los reyes magos is on Jan. 5 - Feb. 2 and the day is about the 3 wisemen, But January the 6th is the special day in Mexico….. this day represents the height of the Christmas season. Struggle for Self-Realization in Their Eyes Watching God. Zora Neale Hurston, the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God, uses Janie’s experiences to show her struggle for self-realization. Hurston’s life is similar to Janie’s in how they are searching for love and self-realization. During Hurston’s childhood (1890’s), her father gave much attention to her sister, and she was jealous of her; Janie also felt “unloved” by Nanny, her grandmother. When Hurston was young, her family moved to Eatonville, Florida, where her dad became the mayor.

The King Cake accompanies parades and festivals to pay tribute to the Epiphany, the day Three Wise Men arrived in Bethlehem and set forth gifts to baby Jesus the twelfth night after his birth. The cake is considered a reenactment of Epiphany, usually a bean or baby figurine baked into the cake to represent Christ and is eaten during Carnival festivities.
The heroine, Mrs. P, has some carries some characteristics parallel to Louise Mallard in “Hour.” The women of her time are limited by cultural convention. Yet, Mrs. P, (like Louise) begins to experience a new freedom of imagination, a zest for life , in the immediate absence of her husband. She realizes, through interior monologues, that she has been held back, that her station in life cannot and will not afford her the kind of freedom to explore freely and openly the emotions that are as much a part of her as they are not a part of Leonce. Here is a primary irony.
Throughout history and literature women are often referred to as birds, especially those of domesticated species. Women being referred to as a pet corresponded to the rise of patriarchal society, “… from this point, civilization has seemed to trap women in stereotypes related to nature which are domesticated, like caged birds” (Clark 342). Women had to fit into the roles society formed for them, trapping them in a lifestyle not appealing to all women. In The Awakening, Kate Chopin uses avian symbolism to emphasize Edna’s entrapment, so as to show the stages of Edna’s awakening.

World War I and World II are basically the same, right? If so, Araby, written around WWI by James Joyce, and The Flash, written around WWII by Italo Calvino, are also the same, no? Indeed, these short stories have many similarities. At the same time, both stories have many differences. Thus, it is difficult to compare both stories when considering all the details. If the subject of comparison is more specific, such as epiphany, then more emphasis and effort can be put into the comparison. In Araby, the protagonist falls in love with a girl, but love deceives him. In his moment of epiphany, “[g]azing up into the darkness [he] saw [himself] as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and [his] eyes burned with anguish and anger” (Joyce 1). In The Flash, the protagonist suddenly grasps a reality, but only for an instant: “[He] stopped, blinked: [He] understood nothing. Nothing, nothing about anything. [He] didn’t understand the reasons for things or for people, it was all senseless, absurd. And [he] started to laugh” (Calvino 1). The comparison between the epiphanies of both short stories reveals the relationship amongst the similarities and differences regarding theme, symbolism and setting.
Becoming the person I am today and overcoming all the roadblocks and detours life has thrown at me, was not easy. An epiphany that has helped change me into a more independant woman, transpired in the office of a dealership. At that moment is when it dawned on me that I’d officially entered adulthood. My significant other, however, sees my move from New York to Connecticut as my most significant and life changing experience. Both of our perspectives were definitely important milestones in my life, but one seemed to tip the scale more than the other .

First, the believed origins of the holiday are different between Maslenitsa, whose roots come from Slavic tribes, and the Venetian Mardi Gras, originating from Roman and Nordic Germanic populations. Second, the restrictions on food the week before the Great Lent play an immense role in the food rituals practiced during this festive time. In the Orthodox branch of Christianity, the consumption of meat is forbidden during Maslenitsa, the week before Lent. In comparison, there is not such restriction in the Catholic branch. Thus, in the Russian tradition, the focus on thin pancakes blini exists, in Western Europe, the food eaten during Mardi Gras is usually not as specific.

The cauldron was left overnight in the open, under the stars, and on New Year's Eve, following a ritual dance around it, the girls' fortunes weretold.Another distinctive thing is ringing Bulgaria bells in the new year.A traditional Bulgarian New Year's dish banica which is a flaky cheese
Self-discovery is a way for one to discover who they are in the inside and to be able to express their characteristics to others. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” - Aristotle. Knowing one’s self isn’t about knowing family heritage, but what one can gain by being around others to help express themselves. Knowing others before themselves can help one boost their expectation in life. One factor towards discovery is by having self confidence. Self confidence can drive anyone to pursue their interests and excel in what they truly love the most. Another important factor that contributes to self confidence is loving one’s self and being an independent person. This element towards life can and will lead one down any path of success
