Ecuador, or the Republic of Ecuador is located between Colombia and Peru in South America. About 10% of the population is of European descent. The national sport is soccer, or as it’s known everywhere, fútbol. Ecuador is a democratic country and their current president is Rafael Correa. The country has a beautiful coastline and is lying exactly on the Equator, so it can get very hot and humid.
Marlon Machado is from Ecuador. He was born in Ecuador but was brought to the United States at age 3, when he was 10 his family and he returned to Ecuador. Yet later they returned for a better life back to America. Marlon lives in Virginia Beach and works at the restaurant, Sol de Mexico which he also owns. He required this establishment from his uncles who through their hard work and dedication bought the first So de Mexico from its previous owner. Now the restaurant is a family run business. While interviewing Marlon many differences were made about his former home and his current home.

People have a relaxed approach to everything. Nothing is rushed and everyone is generally happy. In America, everything is fast paced and generally stressful. Latin American has an abundance of the resources necessary to make any country rich. No continent in the world compares with Latin America in the amount of cultivable high-yield soil, metals important to industrial development: copper, tin, iron, silver, gold, zinc, many others, their timber reserve, as well as oil and hydroelectric power, all of these are found in abundance in Latin America. Yet why is it that Latin American countries are so rich in natural resources but at the same time their people are poor.
In 2012 the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results showed that the eight Latin American countries participating in the assessment (out of 65) scored in the bottom third for reading, math, and science. (4) These findings indicate that the quality of education in Latin America is quite low and unequally spread throughout each individual country. There are many obstacles that add to this problem such as social circumstance, lack of government involvement, and poorly trained teachers. On the contrary, much can be done to turn this around.
