Over the past few months, Ebola has captured global attention due to the mass amounts of media coverage swarming the topic. As a result of this sudden outburst of attention to Ebola, the general public might believe this recent pandemic to be the first of its kind: however, there have been several reported cases of the Ebola virus disease that date back to 1976 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. One contested issue that emerges from the current outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in West Africa is the treatment of health care workers who are returning to the United States after working with the infected people. Upon their return from Africa, state officials from New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Florida, have mandated that the health care …show more content…
Dr. Fauci, a respected immunologist and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, appeared on multiple news outlets to voice his concerns about the mandatory Ebola quarantine. Dr. Fauci said that he was “concerned of the disincentive for the health care workers”. He warned that caution should be made when implementing policies, so as not to have unintended consequences and not group everyone in the same category—in this case, labeling all returning health care workers as a threat to the community. Dr. Fauci agues that this “blanket quarantine” applied to all health care workers is consequential, and that there are better ways of monitoring them that are more dignified, such as passive or active monitoring depending on the viral load that is present in the bodily fluids of the individual. In his conclusion, Dr. Fauci stresses the importance of educating the American people about the Ebola virus disease. While an epidemic of Ebola is waging in Africa, an epidemic of fear is emerging in the United States, and it is this fear that underlines many of the policy decisions regarding processing of those coming from Ebola-stricken
This is an example of the errors the human race performs that leads to disaster. One error can seem pointless to one person but in reality that one error can lead to a whole chain of errors which in time results in disaster and catastrophe. The needles get contaminated and are used from person to person mixing each person’s blood with another making diseases and viruses spread like wildfire. The errors performed at Yambuku hospital lead to Ebola Zaire outbreaks in the fifty-five villages surrounding the hospital. The virus has manifested in the villages making the one error lead to a massacre of the people from within their own bodies. The virus only affected the ones that had gotten shots with the needles at the Yambuku hospital but soon the virus spread in a variety of ways and led to more deaths. Preston goes further into the errors made by the people at Yambuku hospital with Nurse Mayinga. Preston writes “She knew she was becoming sick, but she did not want to admit to herself what it was” (100). Mayinga had contracted the virus when she had gotten in contact with Sister M.E.. Instead of going into the hospital that Nurse Mayinga worked at,
One of the current major concerns in the world is the outbreak of Ebola. Ebola is a infectious disease that comes from the Ebola virus and it can cause death if the patient is left untreated. The disease can be managed with treatment of the patient, however. Ebola is a disease that is a major concern in the Subsaharan African Realm, and in the North American Realm, but it is beginning to be dealt with sufficiently in the Northern American Realm.
Which in this case would allow nurses and doctors to go home after coming back from Africa and assisting in stopping ebola. They would have to stay at their homes, but they would be receiving compensation for missing work” (Ehrenfreund, Max). As the article goes on, I wanted to point out that even the government was to see something different to happen. “A couple of weeks of paid time off might not sound so bad for some returning from the hot zone, but from a court’s point of view, a quarantine is still a quarantine” (Ehrenfreund, Max). With this info being one of the last things talked about on the article, it looks like that there is going to be more thought from the governors point of view as to where the doctors and nurses will be quarantined, which if they hopefully go through with them going home and staying, like the White House is urging to happen; the doctors and nurses would be able to stay in the comforts of their own
In chapter 5 the section relating to The Restrictions on HIV-infected Healthcare Workers was an intriguing portion of the chapter. This topic seldom is discussed in the workplace or in upper level occupational health management. The discussion generally surrounds the healthcare worker and their protection measures against becoming affected from the patient. Rarely, do we hear about the HIV-infected worker and their obligations when working with the patient. The three ethical points surrounding the HIV-infected healthcare worker are, should the healthcare worker perform invasive procedures, should the HIV-infected healthcare worker inform their patients, and should the practice of the HIV-infected worker have restrictions? These were all question
With the country being in debt, it comes as no surprise that there have been funding issues related to the Ebola outbreak. President Obama has requested $6.18 billion in emergency funding to fight Ebola worldwide. The request includes $4.64 billion for immediate needs and $1.54 billion in contingency funds (Leonard, 2014). The largest portion of the funding, $2.43 billion would go to the Department of Health and Human Services, while $1.83 billion would go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Leonard, 2014). The Democrats are worried that all of the money requested won’t go to fund Ebola; they think some will go to the Affordable Care Act to help with the president’s agenda. This is as no surprise that the parties are not agreeing with one other about the decision of the money requested, they also are not agreeing on the issue of whether or not to allow people to travel to and from West Africa back to the states. The funding issue has to be settled by December 11, 2014, so hopefully the two parties can come to an agreement soon because West Africa is still being devastated by the disease (Leonard, 2014).

This survey research study will focus on what people know about Ebola, their attitude toward other Ebola patient’s, and new prevention practice used to stop transmission of Ebola. The survey will be carried out in all of the fourteen districts in Sierra Leone to better understand the EVD outbreak on a national-level with cooperation from World Health Organization (WHO). A sample size beyond the minimum estimated sample of participants was used in order to attain 95% confidence level. Then the questionnaire data will be entered into a customized Excel-based system. The survey will be conducted from August 2018 until May 2019. This study will be an addition to past studies that were conducted at the time of the Ebola outbreak in 2014. This
emergency providers and officials amid the Ebola virus outbreak (Wolf, Ulrich, & Grady, 2016). They provided strategies for diagnosing and caring for infected patients and asserted that hospital staff caring for these patients had an ethical right to education and protective equipment (Wolf et al., 2016). The actions of ENA nurses amplifies recognition of nurses’ expertise, reveals the efficacy of interdisciplinary dialogue in health care, and demonstrates the profound impact nurses make when supported by a professional organization and other health professionals (Wolf et al.,
Recently, CNN anchor reported, “Ebola has caused a record-breaking number of deaths today as verified by John Hopkins Hospital in Maryland. While the human race struggles to find a cure or form of vaccination, people seek protection through extreme sanitation and exile”. Panic, hysteria, and fear sweep our nation. All we can do is sit and wait for a breaking headline to scroll across the screen announcing a day that will be marked down in history books.
Ebola is the most modern autoimmune disorder on the planet that poses the biggest threat to the human race on the planet. However, there is an older disorder that originated also in Africa known as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV. The number of people in the world infected with HIV has just as of recently tipped over thirty million and a whopping twelve million have died since the epidemic began. Robert Gallo is credited with the discovery of the AIDS virus and published that its transfer was through bodily fluid. Gallo discovered that the HIV virus is what causes the central immune system to become weakened and leading towards the outcome of AIDS. AIDS is the condition after the HIV virus goes to work on the human immune system,
Duncan flew from Liberia, a country where the virus has hit strongly. Duncan was a personal driver for a FedEx contractor, it is also known that he quit September 3, 2014. One of the Health care workers Amber Joy Vinson traveled to Cleveland on the October 10, 2014 and returned on October 13,2014 and was tested for Ebola and came out positive. Currently Amber is known to be in quarantine. The U.S. Government has made it very clear that the individuals who have Ebola must be placed under quarantine or will be arrested and put into quarantine. The Texas government say, “Dallas Ebola patient to stay home and not have visitors to prevent spreading the deadly disease,” and if not “a violation could result in criminal charges.” I believe that the Individuals who have Ebola should be placed in quarantine and be treated correctly due to the fact that it is the U.S. Governments fault for taking this issue lightly and not taking precautions when the virus was in
If you have turned on a television in the last couple of months, you have probably heard talk about Ebola. In 2014 alone, there has been just shy of 1,000 cases of Ebola throughout the world (“Ebola Fact”). Although this is the first many people have heard of Ebola, it has been around for years. The discovery of Ebola actually happened in 1976.

Imagine having a deadly disease and can’t do anything about it. Well this imagination is a sad reality for some people. Many people around the world are hit with diseases that have no cure. The Ebola virus has no vaccine or cure so people who get it have to fight or die. Many other diseases have no cure and kill many people each year. For instance Aids and Cancer have no vaccines or cure. Theses diseases kill a lot of people each year and they can’t be stopped unless a cure is found. What would happen if another stronger disease broke out? We wouldn’t have a cure right away or maybe ever. This disease could be the unexpected armageddon. To stop these diseases from hurting more people scientists need to make more medical advancements. Diseases
From August 2014 to September 2014, there are two EBOV cases in Spain. Unfortunately, two people who volunteered in Liberia and in Sierra Leone died after they were airlifted to their country. People who infected with EBOV while volunteering in West Africa are immediately airlifted to their countries for treatment, including: United States, United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, and France. According to the WHO, people had been recovered and no death case. However, there is an imported case in the United States (US). A businessman’s name Eric Duncan traveled from Liberia to US with Ebola virus disease. He was sent to a Dallas hospital in Texas and isolated since he has a positive test for Ebola. He succumbed to EBOV and his death was announced on September 28. Vinson and Nina Pham are two nurses at Dallas hospital who treated patient Eric Duncan were tested positive for the disease. Both were sent to Maryland for their treatment and released on October 24 and 30. Till today, no further EBOV case in US according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevent
