A fisherman is defined as any person, who fishes for either a profit or pleasure, but being a fisherman means much more than that (Dictionary). It is a way of life, and it is a practice that takes place in cultures all around the world. Depending on where one is located, fishing is either looked at as a necessity for survival, can be considered a sport, or even viewed as a hobby. In some cultures, it can be considered a great stress reliever after a long, hard day at work. Since fishing is such a broad subject, I would like to narrow my focus on recreational fishing (in a boat) in south Louisiana.

First, one must know the lingo that is unique to this practice and get the supplies they need. Some words that one may hear include the following: perch-jerkin (the act of fishing without a net), a bird’s nest, (the act of getting the fishing twine in a large knotty mess), a bite (when a fish hits or grabs the bait on the line), casting (when a person throws their fishing line using a rod and reel), rod and reel (the fishing pole and the mechanism that lets one pull in and release their line), set the hook (make sure that one tugs on the line correctly before one reels in the fish), chum ( pieces of bait to attract other fish that is thrown into the water), a swell (when one can see a fish’s wave), a keeper (the fish one can keep), size-limit (the maximum or minimum size a fish can be if one can keep it or not) etc. (AtoZ). These are just some few basic terms that is commonly used by fishermen or any person, who knows about the art of fishing. The items one needs to fish include the following: a net, a boat, a trolling motor, a push pole, an ice chest filled with ice, bait, sun block, bug repellent (it is south Louisiana after all), a fishing measuring stick, a GPS or map, soap, snacks, a fishing pole, extra fishing twine, raincoat, fishing license, life jackets, a full tank of gas, a boat trailer (if the boat is …show more content…

The number one rule of fishing is always being prepared for anything, and let someone know the fishing destination before leaving the dock. Anything can happen while being on the water, and the water is unforgiving, so make sure all the supplies needed are in the boat before leaving the dock. The second rule is to know the fishing laws and limits. Remember the Wildlife and Fisheries and Coastguard are not very forgiving on mistakes like these. The third rule is to have fun. Remember there is no right or wrong way to fish as long as one is having fun doing
