A fisherman is defined as any person, who fishes for either a profit or pleasure, but being a fisherman means much more than that (Dictionary). It is a way of life, and it is a practice that takes place in cultures all around the world. Depending on where one is located, fishing is either looked at as a necessity for survival, can be considered a sport, or even viewed as a hobby. In some cultures, it can be considered a great stress reliever after a long, hard day at work. Since fishing is such a broad subject, I would like to narrow my focus on recreational fishing (in a boat) in south Louisiana.
To be able to understand fishing, and what it truly means to be a fisherman, one must first know where this practiced originated from and some

of its history. Fishing can be traced back to ancient times, when the first fisherman took a piece of a bone or rock and tied it to a piece of string made up of animal or plant material. Then, the fisherman attached a piece of bait to it, and eventually, he caught his very first fish by “fishing” (Perti). One can argue that the first fishermen were spear fishermen, but in reality, there is no right or wrong way to catch a fish (as long as one can catch one). So, what it truly means to be a fisherman? Before one can just pick up a fishing pole and start fishing, one must know the rules and the lingo, before they dive head first and explore the ancient practice.
First, one must know the lingo that is unique to this practice and get the supplies they need. Some words that one may hear include the following: perch-jerkin (the act of fishing without a net), a bird’s nest, (the act of getting the fishing twine in a large knotty mess), a bite (when a fish hits or grabs the bait on the line), casting (when a person throws their fishing line using a rod and reel), rod and reel (the fishing pole and the mechanism that lets one pull in and release their line), set the hook (make sure that one tugs on the line correctly before one reels in the fish), chum ( pieces of bait to attract other fish that is thrown into the water), a swell (when one can see a fish’s wave), a keeper (the fish one can keep), size-limit (the maximum or minimum size a fish can be if one can keep it or not) etc. (AtoZ). These are just some few basic terms that is commonly used by fishermen or any person, who knows about the art of fishing. The items one needs to fish include the following: a net, a boat, a trolling motor, a push pole, an ice chest filled with ice, bait, sun block, bug repellent (it is south Louisiana after all), a fishing measuring stick, a GPS or map, soap, snacks, a fishing pole, extra fishing twine, raincoat, fishing license, life jackets, a full tank of gas, a boat trailer (if the boat is …show more content…
not already in the water), first aid kit etc. Since now one knows the fishing terminology and the items needed to fish, one is ready to learn the rules.
The number one rule of fishing is always being prepared for anything, and let someone know the fishing destination before leaving the dock. Anything can happen while being on the water, and the water is unforgiving, so make sure all the supplies needed are in the boat before leaving the dock. The second rule is to know the fishing laws and limits. Remember the Wildlife and Fisheries and Coastguard are not very forgiving on mistakes like these. The third rule is to have fun. Remember there is no right or wrong way to fish as long as one is having fun doing
it. Now since one knows some basic terminology, rules, and supplies needed to become a fisherman, is one really a fisherman? Anyone can be a fisherman, but the true meaning of being a fisherman is something that comes from the inside. A fisherman is just an ordinary person. There is nothing special about them where looks are concerned. To be a true fisherman, one must love being on the water so much that they think about it constantly. It is about having fun with friends and bonding over something they truly love. Another element that makes one a true fisherman is the respect one has for nature. One should respect the limits Mother Nature puts on them, and not overfish. Lastly, the most quality a fisherman has is sportsmanship and respect for others. Overall, as one can see, being a fisherman is just more than being able to fish. Anyone can fish, but it takes a lot more to be a fisherman.

In the early 1900s people from Italy started to arrive on ship. They first arrived in Detroit, Michigan and later immigrated to Gloucester, to fish like they did back in the old country. Children, as young as ten years old went fishing to make a living for their family. When they first came the fishing industry was booming. There was no limit to how long you could fish or how much you could catch. Many men went fishing for weeks at a time. When Italian fishermen came upon the Atlantic off what is now Cape Cod, the waters churned with schools of fish. When they came nearly 800 of them in Boston and Gloucester combined became fishermen. In New England, cod was king. Enriched by a West Indies trade of fish for molasses, boat owners were referred to as the "codfish aristocracy. Sadly in the late 1990s the fishing industry went downhill and changed for the worst. (.)
My friend had invited me along with him and his family to the ocean. It was vacation for the family, but for him and me it was the beginning of a week of serious business. We had an obsessive hobby to pursue. As avid and long-term freshwater fisherman, we were thrilled by the thought of catching those large and exotic saltwater fish we had seen on television a billion times before. Yet little did we expect there to be such vast differences between our freshwater fishing and the saltwater fishing, which we were about to pursue. We learned through trial and much error that in order to have a successful saltwater fishing experience we had to make adjustments to all the freshwater tackle, tactics, and gear we knew.
Around noon, my family and I head out to the dock. We each grab a fishing rod,
Since the start of time, humans have been catching fish. The sport has, in many ways, evolved hugely, and yet in many aspects has stayed exactly the same. To me fishing is unique and I find it can be anything from relaxing to a very intense experience.
Fishing contains a wide variety of physics. when you cast you are using projectile motion and rotational motion. when you hook a fish it will often use the drag from the current agenst you. Immagine draging a fish through a swift current. You deal with the tention of your line, and the friction of the line through the guides. you also deal with friction when you use a drag.

One of the the quickest ways to get up to local speed is a simple trip to one of the local fishing supply stores. And that's not to include some of the easier-to-find big box retailers that while offering the tackle and supplies you might require are generally lacking in the local

Fishing is an exciting sport that is highly involving and relaxes at the same time. Sadly, many people tend to overlook the activity as a way to burn calories. Fishing doesn’t necessarily mean sitting on your boat waiting for fish to pass by your hook; it can be more than that.
