The historical nature of sports engineering is considered and an attempt for the recent
popularity of sports engineering is given. The development of sports engineering in the
1990's is described and the interaction of technology and sport assessed with the
conclusion that technology causes step jumps in performance while coaching, nutrition
and training produces for larger increases in performance. The global sports engineering
community is described and the size assessed as approximately 1000 researchers.
Finally, a warning is given on the dangers of the misuse of technology in sport.

INTRODUCTION: Sports engineering is a new area of study that has existed for many
years. This contradictory comment is explained if it considered that the mechanics of tennis
was discussed by Sir Isaac Newton over three hundred years ago (Newton, 1671) and by
Lord Rayleigh over a hundred years ago (Rayleigh, 1877). Indeed, many of the world's great
scientists have used sport to explain science and vice versa. Sir JJ Thomson (discoverer of
the electron) gave a treatise on the dynamics of golf balls to the Royal Society earlier this
century (Thomson, 1910). It is only recently, however, that the term 'Sports Engineering' has
been used. The Oxford English Dictionary gives the following definitions,
sport n Pastime, game, outdoor pastime
engineering n Application of science for the control and use of power, esp. by means
of machines.
The term 'sports engineering', therefore, implies the design, development and research into
external devices used by athletes, sports men and sports women to enhance their

THE PROS AND CONS OF SPORTS ENGINEERING: Sports Engineering has the ability to
help athletes and sports men and women improve performance. The rules of sport exist,
however, to protect the integrity of sport. Technology can be dangerous if the implications
are not considered and often ruling bodies find it difficult if not impossible to reverse
decisions (Gelberg. 1998). Sometimes technology goes too far and changes the sport so
much that legitimate sporting comparisons become impossible. Sports Engineers have the
ability both to enhance and destroy sport and care must be taken that they do not do the
latter. In some ways sports engineering is the new cold war - it only works if everybody has it.
An essay “Man and Superman: In athletic competitions, what qualifies as a sporting chance?” by Malcolm Gladwell is attempted to answer an issue “Do genetic advantages make sports unfair?” The essay contains two arguments: human biological diversity makes sports unfair, and, consequently, as human attempts to equalise all the players as considered a moral obligation, the sports industry has no problem with athletes’ self-transformation while doping athletes is prohibited which, in his opinion, they should be justified just like those self-transformations. Gladwell also criticises the sports industry who is actually a culprit of this fairness, they try to level the playing by measuring that no one has an advantage over others but the consequence is a catalyst of science intervention.

The struggle against doping in sport is a very difficult one. Verbruggen (1997; as cited by Waddington, 2000, p.180) has stated that “the fight against doping simply by controlling and punishing doesn’t work. The cheats stay ahead”. In a way, he also emphasized the need for constant revision and reappraisal of existing policies; policies that work now may not work in the future due to any number of factors. What is encouraging about U.K. Sport is that it follows this principle. Indeed, U.K. Sport aims to replace the existing Statement of Anti-doping Policy with a new United Kingdom National Anti-doping Policy that will come into force on the 31st of January 2005.
Professional sports are a vital component to our society as we know it. Week in and week out, fans fill the stands to cheer on their favorite teams, just the same as they did 50 years ago. On the contrary, these professional sports have evolved with the introduction of new technologies that are erupting controversies, especially in the last decade. Experts suggest that these advantages that today’s players have over those in the past can ruin the integrity of the achievements and records they set during their era. Players are getting a distinct advantage, raising the question at hand. Are technological advancements in today’s sports harming the game as a whole? Golf is undeniably a sport that has been thoroughly impacted by technology, and we will examine how the game has been affected.
Sir Isaac Newton, the man that helped people figure out why things move and how they move, had a very interesting life. In the beginning of his early life, he dealt with hardships, and progressed to be an extremely inspiring man later in his life. In college he had many breakthroughs with his scientific works, including the laws of physics that we still use today. His life has answered many of people’s scientific questions that are still being asked today in physics’ classrooms all around the world. His discoveries have helped people for over 350 years to know and understand why things move the way they move, and stop the way they stop. Newton’s works comprise of the Principia and many other important publishing’s that he started when he was just in college. Newton’s life was full of discoveries, from his life as a minor to the years later in his life when he became an important individual in the government and changed the world, as we know it today.

When examining the issue of criminal acts in sports it is easy to realize that there are many places where these acts occur. The range of these acts is far more vast than just in the professional arenas. This is, however, what the public sees and hears about most often. While this is one of the major topics of this paper, criminal acts are found in all of sport ranging from professionals, to college, high school, and in youth sports, including the reaction of the fans. This paper will take an in-depth look at the four major points regarding criminal acts in sport: the acts themselves; the consequences of those acts; the possible reasons for the acts occurring; an analysis of a few major events that have occurred and the possible solutions to the problem of criminal acts in sport. In the section about fan reaction to sport, there will be an overall account of the individual acts and not personal cases due to the overload of personal events that occur.

These types of sports teaches athletes to hold their composure and be mature when there is conflict, and will use these techniques later in life in numerous group settings. As athletes gain their social skills their cognitive intuition starts to kick in. Participating in sports also helps with athletes thought process. Ganz and Hasset believes “athletes learn on the ball field or in the gym that effort and success are connected”. For instance in sports there are key strategies athletes need to comprehend in order to do well in their sport, so athletes are involved physically and mentally. The people believe that “ the coach’s role is to focus on sportsmanship, effort, and excellence “. So that leaves a huge job for the athletes like football and basketball players to memorize the plays that the coaches strategized for them. Athletes practice these plays so at game time they have the potential of winning. Once these key factors come together it is impossible to stop or slow the team down. When it comes to extreme sports, there are different equipment and gears used while practicing these types of activities. Engineering industry and extreme sports industry have come together to provide an ultimate safe performance and high technology for the participants. Since engineering field and extreme sports have emerged, engineers have come up with new advanced ways to improve, develop, and design equipment and manufacture techniques for the extreme sports industry.
“Sports are for fun, but they also offer benefits and lessons that carry over into all aspects of life”. This well-known anonymous quotation conveys the message that sport is the game which has some rules and custom. It is not only for fun and entertainment, but there are also some benefits of playing sports and which gives some important lessons for life. Every kind of physical sports is healthy because it involves running, jumping, stretching, mind skills and much more. There are so many sports available in the world nowadays, but we can categorize them by the numbers of players, the three main categories are individual sport, dual sport and team sport.
Referring to slide two Nelson Mandela once said that “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.” Sport is one of the biggest and strongest unifiers in the world. Although there may be certain issues within a country or the world such as political affiliations, gender, race and ideologies, sport always seems to bring people closer regardless of the current issues at hand.
The usage of performance-enhancing drugs in sports is commonly known as Doping. Doping is banned worldwide in every sports administration and competitions and doping gives an unfair advantage to those using illegal substances, such as steroids to boost their performance. It also puts at stake the integrity of those athletes who do not use performance-enhancing drugs also known as “clean” athletes. In fact it seems that we’re now entering the era of performance-enhancing drugs within professional sports. Doping rids the true athletes of what they truly deserve and is wrong; because why should those who put in a hundred per cent of their effort, be outshone by individuals who are choosing to use substances to enhance their physical and mental abilities? Doping damages the sports industry as a whole because it has a serious physical and mental effects on the athletes, as well as damaging the idea of sportsmanship and it also breaks the trust of the fans, as they realise their idols are hypocrites.
In conclusion, it is explicit that sports is a positive influence on athletes, spectators and the world as a whole as it teaches imperative life lessons as well as allows its participants to experience enjoyment, fulfilment and gratification. As mentioned previously sports enables its players to bring out the best in others and create unity amongst groups as team work is so essential.
