Informatics has become an essential part of the nursing profession and the industry of health care. It is integrated by similar fields that have overlapping areas of focus. The field of nursing informatics (NI) is still blossoming and with its scope continually evolving, it is in need of its own theory. The data, information, knowledge and wisdom (DIKW) framework is a concept of the transformation of data into wisdom through intellectual processes. In the DIKW model, NI is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom into nursing practice (ANA, 2015). This supplementary concept was wisdom. Wisdom is an important element of the DIKW framework, it adds value to the role of nursing informatics, nursing science and the decision support needed to present in each clinical situation. Knowledge is the assured understanding of a subject, with the capability to use it for a distinct outcome. It serves as a pattern that is related and typically requires a high level of predictability to what is interpreted and the expected outcome.
Wisdom is the appropriate use of knowledge, the ability to make correct decisions and to manage and solve human problems (Matney et al., 2011). Contradictory to the previous four levels, it asks questions to which there is no convenient, attainable answer, and in some cases, there may be no known or accepted answers, period. Wisdom as a result, is the method by which we also recognize, or distinguish, ethically between the right and wrong or the good and bad.
DIKW’s Relevance to
Working as a professional registered nurse in the hospital, I realized how nurses struggle to find balance between devoting the time charting on the computer and spending time taking care of the patients. Moreover, I’ve seen nurses where they get discouraged trying to find this balance between patients and charting. As a bedside nurse, I would love nothing, but to tend to the needs of my patients. The length of time consume on electronic charting all day, take the very essence of bedside nursing away from nurses, which is caring. Reducing the time of nurses being occupied on charting by eliminating redundant tasks while conforming to their standard, are the changes I would like to make. These are a few of the reasons why I wanted to pursue a degree in informatics. According to the reading, Writing as a Mode of Learning by Janet Emig, knowledge is described as “an act of knowing that enters as a passionate contribution of the person to know what is being known, which is a coefficient that is no mere imperfection but a vital component of a person’s knowledge.” Essentially, knowledge is composed of what a person, association or discourse community knows about what is already known in their area of expertise or fully know what could occur in a certain situation, similar to how a rhetor must prepare and know what rhetorical situations might occur at any moment during their speech or writing. Knowledge is created to prepare for various outcomes and situations as goals are being constructed in a discourse community.
There is no concrete definition of knowledge, but there is a definition that is widely agreed upon, or a standard definition. This definition may be widely accepted, but just like most things in philosophy, it is controversial and many disagree with it. The definition involves three conditions that must be met in order for one to truly say that they know something to be true. If one were to state: “The Seattle Mariners have never won a world series,” using the standard definition would look like this: first, the person believes the statement to be true. Second, the statement is in fact true. Third, the person is justified in believing the statement to be true. The three conditions are belief, truth, and justification. There are the “necessary and sufficient conditions” for knowledge. Necessary and sufficient conditions are linked to conditional statements, ‘if x, then y’ statements.
A bachelor’s degree is required for this role, however, a master’s degree is recommended. The NI assumes both the technical roles which closely involve the design of information systems, and the less technical positions, such as project manager for the adoption of a new application or trainer of the users. They bring institutional knowledge and experience to the table when applications are designed to meet the needs of the users (AMIA, 2015). Before we can introduce this theme, we must first discuss, what is wisdom literature? We must also discuss, what is wisdom? Wisdom can be defined as “the ability to cope”, “the art of steering”, “one who achieves expertise”, or “the quest for self understanding and for mastery of the world”. These definitions, among many others, describe the word “wisdom”, yet it cannot be placed into one single defining category. Rather, wisdom has no single definition, but can be considered a search that will never end. Wisdom is a lifelong search, one that can be constantly improved, augmented, and changed. In a theological sense, wisdom can be considered to be the fear of the lord, receiving instruction from him, human experience, and mysteries of creation. One who pursues wisdom in this sense must hear wisdom obediently and pray to receive wisdom.

Wisdom is instruction in justice, knowing how to do what is right. It is the simple learning shrewdness so that they are not taken advantage of. It is the young learning knowledge and prudence. It is a growing area of nursing specialty that combines computer science, information technology and nursing science in the management and processing of nursing information, data and knowledge with the sole objective of supporting nursing practice and research. Various nursing theorists have formulated various theoretical frameworks or models related to nursing informatics (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2013). They are defined as a cluster of related concepts or ideas that establish actions that act as major guidelines in nursing informatics to issues related to the central concept of data, information and knowledge. Some of the theories that inform and assist in the framing of nursing informatics include Turley's nursing informatics model, Goossen’s framework for nursing informatics research and Staggers & Parks’ nurse-computer interaction framework (Elkind, 2009).
