Influenza Outbreak
Four years ago the good citizens of this city voted to allow city funds to be allocated toward a new civic center located in the heart of Irvine. Four years ago the good citizens of this great city had no idea that a terrible pandemic would threaten their very lives and the lives of their loved ones. When signs of the flu season came around in late October this year, no one would have imaged that a disease, often with symptoms like a common cold, would have by the end of the year killed almost half of those killed in the Great War itself. Places all across the nation have had to deal with the sick and dying and Irvine is no exception.
This week alone there have been reportedly 3369 new cases of influenza resulting in 60 deaths. This is a staggering jump from last week's amount of 1200 cases. This week's newest count has prompted city officials to call a special session in order to decide on how to deal with the outbreak in monetary terms. The State of California has already given Irvine all that it can until more Federal Aid can be released. In an overwhelming 5-0 vote the city council decided to divert the money set aside for construction of the new civic center and allocate those funds toward medical equipment and vaccines to help fight the deadly disease.
Mayor Beth Krom stated that, "It was the only logical thing to do. With the city not receiving anymore State or Federal aid anytime soon it was only right that priorities be rearranged." In a news conference Council member Sukhee Kang was quoted as saying "I mean we're talking about lives here, not a few slabs of concrete and steel. What good is a civic center if there's no one to seat in it?"
The civic center, which was set to open May 16, 1919, will be left standing half complete and no new date has been set as to when construction will resume. If things continue to go in this direction then the civic center may never be finished. In the long run this may end up hurting the city financially. A lot of money was invested into the project in hopes that it would help make Irvine the cultural capital of Southern California which would translate into more people and more business.
The assumed assassin was a 24-year-old ex-U.S.Marine, who from the beginning had emotional problems and difficulties. His father died had before he was born and his mother was not much support. He was discharged from the Marines in September 1959 and went to the Soviet Union a month later. He tried to become a Soviet citizen but was turned down. He also had been active in the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, a group that supported Cuba's Communist dictator Fidel Castro. He returned to the U.S. with his wife Marina, and baby daughter. No one saw Oswald shoot the President. The high-powered Italian rifle said to have killed the President was traced to Osw...
The issue of purchasing the Reformed Church of Palos Heights exemplified that the citizens are the ones who run the city. The citizens made their presence known in the City Council meetings as well as in the media. The Aldermen attempted to first bribe the Al Salam Mosque Foundation of Chicago with $200,000, and then to purchase the Reformed Church of Palos Heights. The Mayor sided with the people and vetoed the idea of paying $200,000 to the Al Salam Mosque Foundation of Chicago. In the end, the democratic policies on which our country was founded prevailed. The voices of the citizens were heard with a vote AGAINST: 2,856.
The science of shooting hoops involves many different factors: depth perception, velocity, angle of release, and trajectory of the ball in flight. Another thing that can drastically affect your jump shot is if you shoot with only one hand or two hands (shooting hand and stabilizing hand, only releasing the ball with the shooting hand, but using the other hand to stabilize the basketball). This could change your accuracy, speed of the shot, ball security, and release. With all these factors on the line, shooting one handed or two handed can be the difference from winning all your basketball games or losing all of them. In the next few paragraphs, I will talk about some of the factors that can affect a shot.
Lee Harvey Oswald was convicted for the assassination of president John F. Kennedy, there are lots of conspiracy theories that say Oswald did not assassinate the president. In fact Lee Oswald tells the press that he didn't hear about the
...nts, which USC has dealt with more sensitively than with the Hoover redevelopment. A coalition known as UNIDAD (United Neighbors In Defense Against Displacement) has been very involved in this issue. Residents worried that after a drastic remodeling of the area, their rents would raise exponentially, forcing them to seek more affordable housing options elsewhere. Although USC offered a 2 million dollar contribution to aid low-income housing, UNIDAD demanded they provide a minimum of 20 million dollars, temporarily delaying the start of the project. USC agreed to meet their demands, satisfying both parties in the situation. This instance of the residents and members of UNIDAD defending their interests is exemplary of a veto group. The decision and realization of this plan, however, is indicative of the power elite exercising control, but in a more democratic fashion.
In 1979, the NBA introduced the three point line as a chance to score more points during a possession, which later on proved to be a great addition to the game (McNamee, 2013). But, it was not until the late 1980s and 1990s when the play of Michael Jordan sparked popularity and growth in countries all around the world with his high flying dunks. Today, Stephen Curry is revolutionizing basketball with his long range shooting ability. Steph’s ability to score from anywhere on the court, has forced teams and players to follow his footsteps and adapt to his style of play. With the rise of basketball globally, basketball still remains most played in the United States.
In the late 1970's and early 80's, The Great Wall of Los Angeles was hardly a scar, but rather a vibrant rebirth of a poverished, low income neighborhood in the San Bernadino Valley. The community was united and transpired by the colorful creative collaborative work on this long mural that transended the Tujunga canal for almost a mile. Sewn from the creativity and passion for California history, muralist Judy Baca, along with other artist, and the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) began the "beautification efforts" of this otherwise run down poverished neighborhood.
In his inaugural address, Mayor Williams “ran down a laundry list of ‘basics’ that city government needed to provide” which included filling potholes, collecting garbage, improving 911 response times, and improving the wait times at the Department of Motor Vehicles . Williams knew that his list of improvements should be a reconciliation of what the public values and what protects and enhances the public sphere. By publicly acknowledging these issues at the start of his administration, he was signaling to the public that he was committed to creating these valued basic services for every
Alexander Graham Bell the son of Alexander Melville Bell, and Eliza Grace was born on march 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Alexander was born with two brothers Edward Charles Bell and Melville James Bell. Both Edward and Melville died from tuberculosis.
The most important part of the game of basketball is shooting the basketball, after all the object of the game is to put the basketball through the basket. A shot is taken by a player pushing on the ball and launching it toward the basket and upon the ball hitting the rim or backboard physics refers to this action as a contact force. Using this concept of contact force a shot can be calculated exactly. From a player’s height, the mass of the ball and a given position on the court which would include the distance from the basket it is possible to calculate the exact angle and force the shooter must apply to make a basket every time he or she shoots the ball. Of course if it were this easy basketball would not be as fun to watch or play. The problem with hitting a shot every time with the calculated angle and force is that the ball would have to travel toward the basket with the exact angle and force calculated for that particular shot. What makes this difficult is that the muscles in our body would have to be controlled flawlessly to push the ball with the exact amount of force and to give the ball the exact angle that is needed every time a shot is taken...
This gigantic project is important because there are concerns that the new USC Village will displace local community members, many of which are Hispanic, low-income families, and raise the price of housing in the area, making it unaffordable for local residents (Saillant 2012). This would contribute to the idea that USC is slowly gentrifying the surrounding neighborhood, which would force less wealthy local residents out of their homes into less desirable neighborhoods, while bringing in relatively wealthy college students.
Physics is a part of everyday life. It is evident in the modern technological devices we use in every day experiences and objects around us. Although physics is understood to be only useful in the classroom, physics can also be applied to one the most popular activities on the planet, basketball. Whether jumping for the ball, or leaping for a slam dunk, the human body follows the same laws of projectile motion as do other objects. The sport that includes shooting, passing, running, and dribbling involves topics covered in physics such as force, friction, effects of air resistance, velocity, air pressure and energy. Basketball also involves factors such as projectile motion in making a basket, gravity and its effects on passing and dribbling, and Newton’s First and Third Law on passing and a number of others.
Main Point: The problems in our community are great and affect us all in one way or another.
Basketball can be looked at from a mathematic standpoint. To make a pass from one player to another one can use the following formula:
The first step towards the process of shooting is jumping, which might sound simple and silly, but it actually is a very tricky process. It is difficult for athletes to shoot off a dribble, or jumping over other humans to get the shot off. All these situations that happen during a game need balance and correct foot stances for the proper jump. The in game athletes, like the in the NBA has to adjust their foot stances to have and maintain balance for the textbook shot. Also, they bend their knees before jumping to gain and add momentum to their shot. When shooting, athletes should jump upward not forward. They should also sweep their feet forward when they shoot, hence their feet don’t land in the same position where it started, because, if that happens, it can cause
