For example, with most French verbs, whether they are conjugated or not, the ending is almost never pronounced. The same goes for English too such as in the words such as “one” and “knight.” The “w” sound in “one” even though there is not a “w,” and the “k” or “g” not being pronounced even though they are in there. Jennifer Wagner, author of the article History of English, stated, “Vowels can be represented by several different letter combinations and many letters are actually not pronounced [in both the English and French languages]” …show more content…
We have many tenses in common such as the present, past, and future. Both languages use an infinitive form when conjugating verbs. Between the French and English languages, all of the tenses mean the same. The present tense would talk about now, the past tense would talk about something over and done with, and the future would talk about something to come. The French and English languages also have to use an infinitive form when verbs are conjugated. The infinitive form is the “stem” of the word, for example, the word “end.” Since the word “end” is already in its infinitive, one could then add different suffixes to change the meaning and direction of the

We all have the a gift of speaking and perceiving languages. Whether it is sound or soundless we use language to communicate with one another. There are many ways to approach someone when it comes to the word choice you use to communicate. Many languages contain different forms in where they can be comprehended. The readings “Does Your Language Shape How You Think?” by Guy Deutscher and “Lost in Translation” by Lera Boroditsky, discuss how the languages we speak can shape the way we think, and the way we perceive things differ from the aspects of language. In general, I agree with the position these both authors take, languages we speak do shape the way we think through grammatical structures, language of space and orientation, and time.

Margaret Atwood once said "War is what happens when language fails." Atwood simply meant that if one fails to communicate effectively with each other, then that can lead to misunderstanding. Despite the fact that more than a fifth of the world’s population does speak the English language, as more and more people are migrating to new countries they are facing new problems with communication. Profoundly for those that do not speak the same language or even those who do speak the same language, but share a different culture. Then there are others who have been conquered by the English Language and have had their societies crush this domineering language. Again, despite that we have many different languages in the world, we as humans do not always possess an understanding for each other and our culture. We tend to ignore those that are very much different than us and push ourselves to view those that are weaker than us as insignificant.
The Norman invasion of 1066 AD began a period of two centuries in which French was the official language of England, resulting in the introduction of many words with French or Latin roots, such as 'baron', 'justice' and 'government' (Beal, J. 2012, p. 64).
