Throughout time, famous authors have written even more famous books based on their own experiences. Nearly any book can be traced to an event in the author’s life. Whether they do it intentionally or not, these book are basically unofficial autobiographies. While they should not be taken as fact, a reader can come to understand the life of the author, and better understand their work. One famous author, C.S. Lewis, created a beautiful allegory in “The Chronicles of Narnia.” C.S. Lewis was a Christian and Aslan, the main character in the books, was a savior to the world. He modeled Aslan after Jesus Christ. Other famous authors using this technique include J.R.R. Tolkien and John Knowles with his book A Separate Peace.
The Pearl Harbor address to the nation is probably one of the most famous speeches made throughout time. In this essay I will evaluate the rhetorical effectiveness of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's famous speech and show that his speech is a successful argument for the United States of America. I will focus on the speaker's credibility, all the different appeals made throughout the speech, as well as the purpose and the audience of the speech. Also, I will discuss whether or not there are any logical fallacies that may have weakened his speech.
A major rhetorical choice President Roosevelt incorporated into his moving speech was anaphora. After he explained the country’s relationship with Japan before the attack, and after he explained the devastating results of the attack, he starts to list off in a very structured order the other countries Japan chose to attack, using almost a formulaic approach: “Last night, Japanese forces attacked…” The reason he chooses to repeat the same structured phrases repeatedly is to grab the attention of the audience and to make them feel outraged. The Empire of Japan had its ambassador and a colleague meeting with the Secretary of State to give them a message that they didn 't want to continue to negotiate with the United States. The message however showed no signs of the forthcoming attack on Pearl Harbor. The President also creates emotions in the audience by his use of tone and emphasis. His tone is stern yet caring showing that he believes in the American people. He said this speech in 1938, to the people of the United States. The purpose of his speech was to encourage the US to join forces with Britain to overtake Nazi Germany. The subject of his speech is the loss of other countries, and America joining the war, and the tone of the speech is urgency. Churchill’s word choices in his speech “The Lights Are Going Out” are effective through his use of rhetoric and vocal techniques.
Repeating the phrase “I call” in his last paragraph, Roosevelt is emphasizing that he, as the president, is asking everyone listening to do his or her part in the great effort and reiterating that he, despite all the power he holds, needs the citizens to work with him. Furthermore, Roosevelt uses the word “defense” to restate that the US would not be attacking or entering the war, but if they were complacent then they would be put on the defensive. In addition, Roosevelt repeats words like “swiftly”, “urgency” and “speed” to illustrate the urgency with which the country as whole must take action and become the arsenal of democracy. Finally, within Roosevelt’s speech, there are many occurrences of inclusive words such as “we”, “all” and “our”. By emphasizing the unity of the country through these words, Roosevelt reiterates that without a national effort, the situation they are in may become apocalyptic. After reading “The Betrayal of History”, I realized that a lot of things that I was taught as a kid about the history of the U.S. was manipulated. This article talked in earnest about how the history of this great country has been reduced, exaggerated and transformed to suit certain interest groups. It amazes me that the publishing companies are only interested in making money rather than print true historical happenings
By examining Churchill’s use of rhetoric we can see what exactly made him such a great leader. His speeches were able to do more damage to the Nazis than any bomb could have done because his language rallied the people together. His use of repetition proved his points and reminded the country of what mattered most. His descriptive words helped build up anger against the Nazi rule and persuade everyone to pull through the tough times. He used pronouns in such a way that it would personalize everything and help unify his country. Through his unique use of words Churchill was able to convince many that if they could just endure that they would at last be victorious (Bungay).
Winston Churchill was perhaps one of the greatest public speakers in history. Some of the best speeches have come from being in life or death situations, Winston was known best for this. His small sound clips like, “this was their finest hour”, and “this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning”, encourage his troops and his people that they will win this war and will overcome the greatest odds. Although Churchill told many speeches, his speech on June 18, 1940 showed the most emotion and courage of any other speech he told. In this speech he explained that the war in France is over and the war in Britain would begin. He said that if we fail then the world sink into an abyss. This emotion that he shows would give Britain hope, courage and most of all determination.
George Knightley is very good at assessing the characters of other people and so the reader is inclined to trust his judgement on Frank Churchill. Throughout the novel Frank displays some faults which would make him appear to be the villain towards the end of the novel. His behaviour towards some people has been awful, particularly in the case of Jane who he had constantly teased and tormented when he said he was in love with her.
To begin, both speeches were written by well-known people. They support one topic that is to persuade the audience to accept the idea of honoring those who have perished in rectitude of serving their countries. As well as explain why they are in the battlefield, to help them to not forget the persons who have protected them so they can live in peace, while they endure a never ending fight for freedom. “We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.” (“The Address Delivered at the Dedication of the Cemetery at Gettysburg”, paragraph 2, lines 2-4) It says that they are met on a great battle field, and that they have come to dedicate that portion as a resting place for those who are deceased. Even though they won’t remember what was said to them, they will remember what it was that they did on that field.
