Section I, Question 2
In the early 17th century “absolutism” was not only thought of in the theological sense it was also a political catch word all through out Europe. England had a few rulers attempt to create an absolute monarchy. James I and Charles I both tried to have complete rule over the country without consulting Parliament. Parliament, which had a large portion of control, prevented these two rulers from successfully hindering their power. The citizens of England were very use to the combined rule of the king and Parliament. So they were not very eager or willing to release all the power to a single person. In Parliament an official could be changed if need be, and no one person could in charge of decision making. This is one of the main benefits to having a Parliamentary type of government. Toward the middle of the 17th century troubles between Charles I and Parliament sparked England’s civil war. This in turn created problems for future rulers with aspirations about ruling without Parliament. England’s civil war was basically the death of royal absolutism; eventually Parliaments power grew to the point that it became the head body of government in England.
Royal absolutism failed horribly in England, this however was not the case in France. France did not have a power similar to Parliament to try and compete against the monarch for control. The citizens of France were also more willing to accept a single head of government. Most felt that having this strong leader would help protect them and keep the peace within their country.
So in conclusion it is clear to see that both systems of government have benefits and drawbacks. Parliament can help a country make better well rounded decisions and also keep a corrupt ruler in check. Absolutism, with the right leader, can help citizens feel more secure give the country a strong image. So in the end it comes down to what the people want and feel comfortable with.
Section II, Question 3
The Industrial Revolution in its simplest form was the creation and use of power driven machinery in manufacturing. It began very subtly. There was a growing demand for agriculture and textiles and the current machinery was unable to keep up. One of the first advances in machinery was the use of water power. Mill owners created machines that could use the power of a flowing stream to enhance the speed of their textile machines.
During the 16th and 17th centuries a new type of ruling emerged as a result of unorganized government called royal absolutism. This type of government was seen in many European countries including France and Russia where King Louis XIV and Peter the Great ruled respectively. Both had ways of ruling that were similar to each other and different to each other. Politically, economically and socially both Louis XIV and Peter the Great were similar to and different from how they ruled and what their reign resulted.
Differently, England failed at absolutism as a result of unstable, unpowerful, and differently minded kings and their failure at overpowering the nobles. France was able to gain more royal power than England, leaving them with complete control over their country, and left Europe without complete control. Learning how countries gained an absolute monarchy is important in the modern world because from this, people learned how to develop modern governments. Afterwards, countries started to decide whether it would be in their best interest for sovereigns to be under the law, rather than above the law. The old need for an absolute monarchy turned into a need for a government that was right for the
Under an absolutism based government, the people are ruled by a single dictator. A prime example of a government similar to that of absolutism would be the Soviet Union under control by Joseph Stalin. Another example would be Adolf Hitler when he dominated Nazi Germany. Constitutionalism on the other hand is a form of government where checks and balances come into play. There is not a single individual who is able to control the entire government. Sure there are people who have more control than others. However, these people are not able to make decisions that would shake the government to its core. Why? Other members of the government would veto the individual and ultimately, put a complete stop to the disastrous plans that he/she had in store for the government. Another belief of a constitutionalism-based government is that there is a constitution that has been written and put into play. The constitution is similar to that of a rulebook per say. An absolutism-based government would never carry such a thing or even think about it for that matter. As has been noted, absolutism and constitutionalism are completely different from one
In an absolute government, the people are not in a position to question the government on their decisions. Moreover the corruption in those governments can run a muck if not checked. In order to circumvent this Locke suggests creating separate powers to both pass and enforce the law. Locke was one of the first political philosophers to separate powers of the government, which was in direct difference from the absolute monarchies he was living under. According to John Locke the government should consist of a legislative branch and an executive branch (Locke 1681, 335-37). The former makes the laws while the later enforces it. He further gives prerogative power to the executive branch to make decisions must be made by the executive branch can be made by their own discretion as long as it is of the public good ((Locke 1681, 244). The separating the powers is effective because it allows for a type of checks and balances. It means that the ones passing the laws are not fully exempt from being punished by them if the need arises. Secondly because of the prerogative power of the executive branch, it theoretically can allow for the executive branch to step in and prevent any unjust laws from passing, if they choose not to enforce it. The downside of this is depended on the number of people in the community. If the community is too big, then it might be harder to
In England, the parliament because of this need, grew to have power over the king and cause great toleration of people's
In the seventeenth century there were different types of leaders in Europe. The classic monarchial rule was giving way to absolutist rule. Absolute kings claimed to be ruling directly from God, therefore having divine rule that could not be interfered with. In 1643 Louis XIV began his reign over France as an absolute king.
The Industrial Revolution was the major advancement of technology in the late 18th and early 19th century that began in Britain and spread to America. The national and federal government helped the United States grow into a self reliant nation with improvements in transportation, technology, manufacturing and the growth of the population.
During the late 17th and early 18th century, many European nations such as France and Russia were absolute monarchies. Even countries such as England had kings who at least attempted to implement absolutism. Indeed the concept of absolutism, where the monarch is the unquestionably highest authority and absolute ruler of every element in the realm, is certainly appealing to any sovereign. However, this unrestricted power was abused, and by the end of the 18th century, absolutism was gone. Absolutism failed because the monarchs' mistreatment of the population caused the people to revolt against their rule and policies. There are many factors which caused this discontent. For one, there was a great loss of human lives. Louis XIV of France participated in four wars, while Peter of Russia ruthlessly executed anyone who stood against his will. Secondly, monarchs attempted to change religious beliefs. This was notable in England where rulers such as James II desired to convert the Anglican nation into Catholicism. Finally, the burden of taxation was more than the population could support. France was brought into huge foreign debt, English kings constantly attempted to raise money, and Peter of Russia increased taxes by 550 percent. These are some of the key reasons why absolutism failed in Europe.
All the centuries, women want their right to do any thing. They do not want to depend on their husbands. For their rights, they started to fight to give them at least right to vote, and their wishes comes true in early 20th century. 20th century witnessed the growing equality between men and women. In Canada 1916, women in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan were given the right to vote in provincial election. Like that, all other province started to follow this rule but except the Quebec and Quebec granted the right only in 1940. In the second-wave of feminism, they were inspired by the success of the civil right
The Industrial Revolution refers to the greatly increased output of machine-made goods that began in England in the mid 1700s. Before the Industrial Revolution, people made items by hand. Soon machines did the jobs that people didn’t want to do. This is a more efficient way of making goods. During the industrial revolution, political, economic, and social forces led to a period of upheaval for the French during the eighteenth century.
The term ‘absolute” defines the singular power of the monarch to control every aspect of governing without the aid of the aristocracy or parliamentary forms of governance. The example of Louis XIII defines the rise of absolute monarchy in the 17th century, which eliminated agreements, such as the edict of Nantes, which enabled to aristocracy rights and powers in governmental decisions., however, Louis XIII dissolved these laws in order to gain total dominance over governmental affairs through military and financial might. In this example. Louis XIII defines the role of absolute monarch and the individual powers that the king welled over the government in 17th century
The fall of Absolutism began in England in the 1600s primarily due to the beliefs and actions of King Charles I and then the corresponding reaction of the English Parliament. “Absolutism is the exercise of complete and unrestricted power of the government” (Grv, David Parker).” Charles I believed that kings ruled at the discretion of God and only had to answer to God for their actions. Parliament served at the King’s discretion and existed to fulfill his agenda. Historically, Parliament could be summoned or dismissed at the King’s will. They had limited power and the King shared little with them as he distrusted their ability to be effective. Rather than work with Parliament to resolve issues Charles remained inflexible and when necessary engaged in alternative measures to achieve his goals.
Failure however, does not ensure success. Whereas failure helps one develop grit, not everyone can handle failure. Those who are determined and change their ways after failure will succeed. Anyone else may get too wrapped up in the thought of failing again
Failure is not merely the reciprocal of success; moreover, it is the shadow of success waiting for the correct path of light to grow and unveil itself. Instead of being melancholy about failing, we should take our failure as an advantage to do the correct thing and succeed. After all, as said by Ellen Degeneres, “It’s failure that gives you the proper perspective on success.” I, along with the billions of other people on this planet, have failed many times in life. However, there are certain failures that can teach us a value so powerful that it can outpower the most preached teachings or morals.
Failure is something in life that everyone is afraid of. Failure is apart of everyone’s life at some point whether it’s in a sport, at school, or even just a part of daily life. Failure can be in taken in two ways, one; you can take the failure in as a challenge and push to strive better and never want to fail again, or two; take failure in bad and not want to try harder and just give up without after failing once. Some of the richest or even successful people in life have had failures. The famous basketball player Michael Jordan, when he was a sophomore he tried out for the varsity basketball team and didn’t make it. But if it wasn’t for that failure in his life he would of have never tried his hardest to end up becoming one of the best NBA players in history and have one of the most successful shoe brands. That’s just one of the many successful people who had failures in life.
