Industrial Revolution: The steam Engine Most people likely came to school in a car or maybe the bus. The transportation they came to school in is powered by an engine. In the Industrial Revolution, the steam engine was as important as the engine in their car. The steam engine solved the problem in the 19th century of a more powerful source energy, more convenient way to power machinery and a faster way to produce energy. Before the steam engine, people powered equipment by using natural resources and animals. This was their main source of energy in transporting commodity and crowds. The steam engine was more powerful than these sources and was more reliable. James Watt made a more productive steam engine while Thomas Newcomen created the engine itself. Water was one of the ways to power engine before the steam engine. To work these engine would need a running river to move, causing factories to be near river banks. While the industrial innovations brought wealth to some and jobs for others, it all came with a cost: pollution from coal powered factories turned the cities black. Lack of housing created the first urban slums. And the demand for more and more goods, and higher profits, brought the exploitation of workers, including children.

With these technologies, the textile industry flourished and factory owners became very wealthy by forcing workers to work long hours for low salaries. Their low wages did not afford them to live comfortably, which meant that many people had to live in crowded buildings that were unsanitary. Not only did these factory workers have poor living conditions, but the working conditions in the factories were dangerous, especially for children.
