Hamlet is the world’s most filmed play, after Cinderella. In William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Hamlet is the prince of Denmark and the protagonist. He is yearning for revenge of his father’s death. He is indecisive, impulsive, mad, and seeking revenge. All these characteristics are shown in Hamlet’s character but through other character’s personas and actions.
Hamlet becomes mad when his father’s ghost comes to see him and tells him that his uncle, Claudius, was the cause of his death. His madness is not displayed until he accidentally kills Ophelia’s father, Polonius. Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, witnessed the murder and soon realized how mad Hamlet really was. Gertrude told Claudius “Mad as the sea and wind when both contend… (4.1.7.)” James Stuart Mill claimed Hamlet would “probably be diagnosed as mad, for only in madness, dreams and fever, did the mental images grow so vivid as to overpower or be easily taken for the impressions from real object (263).”
Hamlet is stuck between two moral values— to revenge his father’s death and his belief that murder is wrong. This causes indecisiveness because he must make the decision of what is right and what is wrong. He still somewhat believes that his father’s ghost could’ve been a damned one from hell.
