Social- cognitive factors can motivate offenders to commit crimes. Low intelligence, learning disabilities, and poor attitudes make the school experience difficult especially for youth in poor neighborhoods. These children will often gravitate to the wrong crowds, socially withdraw from peers, and have a higher chance of joining a gang. Children with cognitive problems have higher levels of aggression and have a difficult time socializing with peers. They lack confidence and are unable to use their verbal skills to resolve conflicts in challenging social situations. When a young child is unable to verbally communicate with others, they act out when they become frustrated and can become very aggressive. This is similar to how youth with language problems will respond in difficult situations. There are many prevention and treatment programs that were established from the social cognitive theory and research.
The program I selected to discuss is The Incredible Years Program which “is a comprehensive curriculum for parents, teachers, and children that is designed to promote emotional and social competencies and prevent conduct problems in young children.”(DeLisi, M. (2013). The goals of this program are to prevent delinquency, violence, and drug abuse, provide treatment / prevention of early onset ADHD or conduct problems, and develop a community based and cost effective program. This program targets children ages 2 to 10 who show high risks to aggressive, oppositional and defiant behavior. Group sessions are held that last between 2- 2.5 hours with food, child care and transportation provided to each session. The sessions focus on praise / encouragement, building positive relationships, incentives, social skills, problem solving, proactive strategies and discipline, and emotional
literacy.
Further, the reason for them to get involved in the deviant behavior should be established first before judging them. According to studies, most youths is exposed to environments that drive them to commit crimes. Studies indicate that 79 percent of the children who involve themselves with crimes witness violence in their homes (Steinberg and Scott). Besides, 17 percent of these children grows without the frequent presence of their relatives (Nellis 45). Children facing such social disadvantages are most likely to commit crimes. Sentencing them may not be the solution since it adds more suffering than good for their lives. Instead of convicting them, the cause of them committing crimes should be established. This program will be used mostly in schools; they will be put in a room that is dark and scary. A video will play showing the child the effects of their behavior and how it can turn into a serious problem. They would have to stay in this room until the video is over and once the video is over they will be sent back to play with the other kids. If they continue to display these signs they will get publicly humiliated by the authority in charge. The child will learn very quickly that those actions won’t be accepted. There are many individual-level variables that can explain why juveniles become involved in delinquent acts. One important variable that plays a major role in this is the major affect that family context has on the role of child development. More specifically, the idea of child abuse comes into play that has always been researched and focused on as a major part as to why some juveniles become involved in delinquent acts. Child abuse involves important family characteristics that affect the growth of a child and will ultimately damage them both physically and mentally. If a child is damaged at a young age, then they way they think and perceive the world changes, especially if help is not given to them in their time of need. Child abuse is a serious issue and is a major point that affects juvenile delinquency and the role they play in society, meaning if they have a positive, or negative role and the way they will live their life.
Achievement Place is the prototype of the teaching family model for rehabilitating juveniles in trouble with the law. Achievement Place was set up in a house in the boys' community and run by two people, Elery and Elaine Phillips, a married couple trained in behavior therapy. Developmental crime prevention programs aim to lower an individual’s potential of becoming criminal. The theory that guides these types of programs is that criminal and deviant activity is the result of early life experiences and learning. These programs put an emphasis on what causes individuals to commit deviant acts in order to identify ways that this activity can be stopped (Lab, 2014). According the Rogers (2013), there are causal factors at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels that can lead youth to engage in delinquent activity. At the micro level, the factors that predict delinquency involve: being male, low educational achievement, low impulse control, childhood aggression, antisocial behavior, and hyperactivity. At the mezzo level, family conflict, lack of family support and appropriate discipline, and negative peer pressure can be risk factors for juvenile. On a macro level, youth that live in poverty or in high-crime urban neighborhoods, and are exposed to violence at home and in their neighborhoods, have a higher risk of engaging in delinquent behaviors. Growing up as a kid can have a big impact on a person later in life. Living in a broken home and not having a parent to guide them can make a kid turn to bad actions. Not having any love or affection sometimes causes kids to become troublesome at school to get the attention they want, and that usually continues in their life.
