I personally think that with these practices, the country will have an increase in literacy and education across the nation, which will result in our health and personal well-being and success increasing across America. Since uneducation and absence of knowledge leads to problems we face such as STD’s being spread, homelessness, and the inability to get jobs and succeed, the increase of literacy will help prevent these issues from continuing to harm us. Deborah Brandt, in " Sponsors of Literacy", argued that class and race can impact how much access a person has to literacy sponsorship. She spoke of Raymond Branch and Dora Lopez who both lived in the same area, but due to their uncontrollable circumstances, had different amounts and forms of literacy sponsors. As I read this article I found myself between both Branch and Lopez's situations. I agree with what Brandt said and for that reason I will be joining her in the argument. When we consider the education of our children in the United States, we must consider their health as a significant issue as it can positively or negatively impact a student’s education. It has generally been acknowledged that there is a great disparity in our country in the area of health care. Healthy People2010, a published report put out by the Health and Human Services Division of the Unites States Government (2000) has included as part of its Goals for 2010, to eliminate health disparities among different segments of the population. According to this report, health differences occur depending on a persons gender, race or ethnicity, education or income, disability, rural locality, or sexual orientation. In this paper, I will mostly concentrate on racial and ethnic differences as well as socioeconomic differences. According to the Healthy People 2010 report, biological and genetic differences do not explain the health disparities experienced by non-White populations in the United States. Besides "complex interaction among genetic variations, environmental factors, and specific health behaviors," Health and Human Services says, "inequalities in income and education underlie many health disparities in the United States." Also, "population groups that suffer the worst health status are also those that have the highest poverty rates and least education." Health, United States (1998) reported that each increase of income or education increased the likelihood of being in good health. According to this report, those with less education tend to die younger than those with more education for all major causes of death including chronic diseases, communicable diseases and injuries. There are several factors that account for differences between socioeconomic and racial and ethnic groups. These factors include a lower sedentary life style, cigarette smoking and less likely to have health insurance coverage or receive preventive care among these groups.
For this assignment, I completed a survey to assess my school’s literacy program by using a survey that was adapted from by Patty, Maschoff, & Ransom (1996) to analyze the instructional program and the school’s infrastructure. To be able to answer my survey, I needed to go colleagues of mine in the English Department and to my administration to help with these questions. Being a math teacher, we hardly ever discuss the literacy and the students’ acquisition of it in our department meeting during staff development days. Since I am not truly current with literacy acquisition in education, I am hoping to understand more from this process so I can help all my students. I want them to be able to read texts related to math and find information that will be useful to them during the year.

The narrative examples expressed in the text of “ Sponsors of Literacy,” assisted the illustration of Brandt’s central point by clearing stated the obstacle then correlating the event to the different types of sponsoring. Iliana was pregnant and had a son at the age of Seventeen, she then had two more kids by the age of Twenty One. She proceeded to drop out of high school due to the social and economical pressures of being a high schooler, as well as a mother. Iliana makes it apparent that she was not ready for this life altering step. Iliana stated “ I wish i’d have finished school before having kids”. We are now at the end of year. The students are restless, and they can barely wait till summer break. They have thought very little about how their literacy skills have changed throughout the year, but I have. One of the questions I was asked to reflect on, was the challenges I faced with creating my literacy profile. The major challenge was finding samples that related to my chosen standards. This was a lot harder than I original thought. There were several times where I had to create a lesson so that I would have a sample that showed that standard. Other challenges I faced were trying to remember to collect the samples and finding time to assess my binder so I could see each student progression throughout the school year. The types of Literacy Assessments include: Map Testing; Star Reading; and PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening). However, “Universal literacy screenings such as DIBELS Next and AIMSweb are often characterized as fluency assessments because they measure both accuracy and efficiency in completing tasks,” (Munger, n.d.). In kindergarten children are starting to learn in a different way than preschool, meaning that there is more instruction and they are learning the convections of reading and writing. AIMS web is one assessment used frequently by teachers at Skyline. Students are assessed at the beginning of the year (fall), winter, and spring. Students are also take the STAR reading test to asses students’ comprehension ability. The data collected is used to create groups and identify where students are preforming at. There are times, we have the tendency to make things more difficult than they need to be. This can be the case when it comes to teaching literacy development in children. In this case, "the alphabetic principle is the understanding that words consist of letters that correspond to sounds" (Coats, 2013). That's it. We need to figure out ways that allow children to best learn this. I like the approach of teaching children different words and then play off those words by changing the first letter(s) to make a rhyming word. When children see how easily this can be done, they will quickly begin to associate the sounds the letters make with their visual recognition of the letters.
