In a society that is often sexualized with mixed messages delivered to children and adolescents through media, at home, or at school, the research and analyses of abnormal sexual behavior have become more common. Although the term abnormal is subjective contingent upon who is asked and what is being assessed, in general, it has been considered behaviors that are socially inappropriate as well as those that are offensive or injurious. In addition, behaviors such as exhibitionism, voyeurism, bestiality, fetishism, sadism, and masochism have fallen into this definition. Abnormal Sexual Behavior in Children with Disabilities Inappropriate behavior in adolescents stands as a particularly neglected topic in sexual research due to its sensitive nature. However, a series of studies have found a positive correlation between inappropriate sexual behavior in children and developmental disabilities. In adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder, this behavior is particularly prevalent because they demonstrate normal patterns of physical development, yet experience delayed emotional changes and emergence of sexual urges. This can create a challenging timeline as typically co-occurring physical and emotional changes do not happen at the same time. In addition, adolescents with ASD are much less likely to respond to the societal norms that dictate appropriate behavior, leading to an emergence of inappropriate sexual behavior.
