government has not capitalized on the lessons learned. Discussions about implementing stricter gun laws, scrutinizing applicant background checks, and even talks of banning assault weapons continue to be the topic of White House round-table discussions and in search for the solution. These are viable solutions although would require time and sufficient manpower strategy to conform within our legislative system . Safety experts states, “Even though most school crisis plans generally address school violence generated by students, more attention needs to be paid to the threat of outside intruders, because little can be done to stop a determined shooter once he or she has gained access to a school building. ” Historical data from previous school shootings in the U.S. share the commonalities where gunmen select the path of least resistance, as well as knowing the provided protection to counter the attack is limited or nonexistent. Other factors supporting the gunmen’s objective include; the area were the school is located, crime level, environment and its natural landscape, the construction of the school to include its entrances and exits, and the number of personnel populating the school and its facilities. “Although schools are continually reviewing, modifying, updating and reminding their teachers and staff of the emergency response plan,
Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went on a shooting spree in their high school in 1999. The two boys illegally required guns, which led to the killing of 15 students and injuring another 21 students. In 2007, Virginia Tech student, Sung Hui Cho once wrote on an assignment in 8th grade that he would like to “repeat Columbine.” This same student went on to kill 32 students and injured 17. Just 11 days before Christmas in 2012, an armed man walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Adam Lanza entered the school with a semi automatic rifle, fatally shooting 20 students and 6 staff members. “It’s not if but when. A string of high-profile traumatic events spanning nearly 20 years has proven unequivocally that school crisis response is not a choice; it is inevitable” (Cowan). Shootings in schools across the country are becoming more and more common. In addition to the three of the deadliest school shooting cases in history, there are constantly reported cases of a student roaming the halls with a gun. In our society, it is unfortunate that parents are forced to worry that their children are in danger every time they set foot in their classroom. When they send their children to school every day, a school-shooting massacre is always a possibility. As long as American citizens are allowed to legally carry firearms in public, the possibility of a shooting will always be
Over the past decade years 200 victims have fallen due to school shootings. These numbers don’t even justify for the number of people killed in years prior to the 2000’s. Though these numbers don’t justify for the numbers of students injured or killed with other weapons, school safety is becoming a topic of discussion. As time goes on, people are bringing more attention to the subject of school safety. With the numerous school shootings in various states, lack of security in schools, and not enforcing rules for the students schools are becoming less safe.

School shootings are tragic and there are so many victims, so many innocent lives lost at the hands of hate. We must find a solution to this type of violence. But, to get to the solution we must identify the roof of the problem. In addition to the research on school shootings Hockley says, “Solutions begin with education about what causes gun violence. Her group encourages "Promise Communities" at the local level, which receive tools from the charity, all those who join Sandy Hook Promise are asked to pledge to work to end gun violence” (“School Violence”, School Violence). In other words, one solution to this problem was to make an organization that would spread the word to everyone about control gun violence throughout the world. They made a pledge for those who died in Sandy Hook, to educate others and to try to help avoid another situation like this in the future. Schools should implement more security training and more officers.Over the years, a handful of massacres that have come to define school shootings in this country are almost always remembered for the students and educators who have been kill in cold-blooded. Aforementioned created Death tolls that transpire so frequently that the numbers and places become permanently linked to the area that it occurred. What the media fail to capture, though, is the collateral damage of this uniquely American dilemma. The first incident of a school shooting was in Columbine in 1999, more than 187,000 students attending at least 193 elementary or middle schools have experienced a shooting on campus during school hours. Even if School shootings remain very rare, this represents a tiny fraction of the gun violence epidemic that has plagued the United States. On average, this leaves a child bleeding or in harsh conditions every hour in the United States. While few of those incidents happen on campuses, the ones that do have spread fear across the country, changing the culture of education and how kids grow up. Every day, threats sent classrooms into lockdowns that can frighten students, even when they turn out to be false
