Introduction:
“In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common and most effective type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) to help women become pregnant” (Medical News Today). In Vitro Fertilization is a process where an egg is fertilized by a sperm outside the body, in the laboratory. Immediately after the embryo is produced, it is then positioned in the uterus. The process has 5 steps and takes about 4-6 weeks. The first step in the process is the ovarian stimulation. This step involves drugs. The hormone that’s taken over 8-14 days, fuels and stimulates the ovaries to produce more than one egg each cycle (The In Vitro Process). IVF requires several eggs because there is a chance that some eggs might not develop fine after fertilization. After that, the doctor will use ultrasound or he will test the blood in order to decide when it is necessary for him to take out the eggs. The ultrasound test is a painless scan that uses sound waves to come up with images of organs in the body. The ultrasound test looks like this:

The second step is the egg retrieval: once the eggs are ready for retrieval, the doctor does a transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. This is a simple operation that uses a small amount of anesthesia to locate the eggs. When the doctor locates the eggs, he inserts a needle to get them out. Step number 3 is Insemination: after retrieval, doctors inspect the eggs and decide which egg is the most conceivable for a successful pregnancy. Then he places the eggs in a laboratory, while they retrieve the father’s sperm. The sperm is then added to the eggs in an incubator. An incubator is a device that preserves eggs and keeps them warm.
