In the Parrot in the oven Martinez uses similes in Manny's character. To create the character of Manny as a hard worker to work all summer to get his school supplies, he wants to do his best for his future career and be able to help his family out. In the Perrot in the oven Manny has good thoughts about his future because he is a hard worker and does anything to get money for his school supplies and his baseball glove. In the novel shows that everything about Manny from change from when he wanted to play baseball and going to school, to being in a gang and doing things he has never done before. The big picture of the novel is how Manny change throughout the time. Manny was coming of age to a man he will work with his brother out in the field. In the beginning of the novel he would get compared like his brother. Manny wasn't like his brother he didn't workout like him, Manny prefers to work and get his money for his school supplies and his baseball glove. Manny was was changing in the middle of the book. Throughout the book Manny's father was going crazy about how Manny's mother inbaresed him in front of his friends. The father was going to shoot his wife, Manny was trying to convince his father not to do it: “But dad,if you shoot mom,they’ll only throw you in jail. Then what will happen to us?.” (p.g 56) This shows that Manny cares about his father and he doesn't want him to commit a crime. Manny is a good person but his father doesn't like him. A symbol that happens in the book is about how Manny helps his mother to take his sister to the hospital because she had a miscarriage Manny wanted to help: “ Mom, I think you better get dad's keys so we can take her to the hospital again.” Manny wants to help her out but Manny's mother is afraid that her husband will find out about their daughter being
